I just found a bent bolt on my exhaust manifold so decided to undo it to replace it.

What do ya know it snapped off inside the head, YA for me!!!

After taking off the exhaust manifold to try and remove the bolt i managed to snap 2 more

Has anyone else has similar problems with this?

Has anyone tried removing a bolt snapped off in the head?

Im about to attempt to remove it with one of those extractor set of drill bits.

will post how successful this is

ALso wondering if anyone has tried purchasing gasket sets for the RB20

I was qouted $650 for a gasket kit that included everything including the head gasket

no one was able to get me just the exhaust manifold gasket

Yes this happens with lots of Nissans and cars in general.

You drill a little hole in the stud (the bolt part stuck in the head) and then use some easyouts to unscrew them.

Get new studs from your local auto parts shop for about $2.50 each and wind them in.

yep had to do it on the ceff... not cheap.. but worth it... IF you're in SA let me know, and i'll give you the phone number of a mobile guy who comes out and does it... cost around 100bux i think for 5 or 6 bolts to get out... "Captain Thread" - absolute champ.

Can I suggest that you try and scrape a goove into the bolt, depends on how deep it is, but if its snapped off flush at the top you can use a knife and scrape a line in it to use a screwdriver to remove it.

I have donr it with smaller bolts, maybe worth while.

Thats a good idea, never though about doing it that way. I dont think it will work with head bolts though, those things are in tight as a nuns ***** :P

Have just dropped the engine out of my car so i can drill these holes nice and straight

Ive already had limited success trying to rip a snapped stud out of the dump pipe

with the easyouts

I wish they hadnt snapped inside the head, otherwise i would have tried that suggestion of cutting a grove in the stud and using a screwdriver

will let you all know what ends up working best

I can't beleive that you had to drop the whole engine just to remove a few bolts. I woulda gone for a compact drill, so I can fit it in the space to drill it straight.

I've seen a few air tool ones that are quite compact.

That would suck. best of luck mate.

Droping the engine out

I feel for ya dude, what a pain in the a** those bolt have turned out to be.

a pain in the arse in deed

i tried using my air drill which is pretty compact, but it started to drill at an angle, due to it sitting up hard against the A/C lines on the firewall

is all good though, wanted to give the engine a freshen up anyways as it was running like poo

i pulled the fuel filter off, and mud poured outta it

YUK!

might have to port the exhaust manafold a bit while im at it

Well i managed to rip these bolts out of my head.

The first 3 took 20 minutes to do, the last one took me 2 hours due to a drillbit snapping and wegding itself inside the bolt.

anyways the easi-outs worked fairly well for 2 of the bolts. I tried the screwdriller method for the other 2 though and it seemed far easier, and would have made it alot cheaper.

As my bolts had snapped in the head i simply drilled 2 very small holes next to each other and used a flathead screwdriver bit for a drill. it was so easy unscrewing them just using an 8mm socket

I wish i had of tried this way first instead of spending 20 bucks on the easi-outs

theres a company called thread doctor. They are really really cheap and will come to you. They do a professional job and the job the do is very clean.

i had a mate who snapped 4 head bolts and it cost him under $100 to get them all out and re threaded.

    • KW only offers a set for the R32 GTR. Popular options are D2 racing, Ksport or Öhlins. I have a D2 Racing coilover set, though I don't know for sure which one.
    • Well, the good news is you have more than one very good option for new coilovers in and around your country. Worth the drive over to KW to talk about GTR stuff.
    • Fair enough, I am in no way a tire expert so I'm not familiar with all the terms and conditions. I'll definitely note down the AD09 to potentially try in the future. Rain is not too big of a concern for now as I will probably only drive in the rain when I have to. And considering I still lack experience driving the GTR I'd more than likely take it easy too. I have coilovers in the car but as I barely got to drive so far I never bothered to even check if they are adjustable haha. The suspension is almost entirely old and worn as well so I suppose when I eventually fix that in the future that would make a huge difference.
    • There's not a great deal to report here .... except ...... FOR .... LSD!!!  I bought a Quaife LSD from the UK and shipped it here .... Wish I'd just bought locally cause the shipping and duty was $700! But there were so many diffs used in the E90s I just wanted to be absolutely certain I was getting the right one so I spoke with a supplier in the UK who builds race cars and they have heaps of experience with the E90s.  I pulled the diff out which was seriously awesome - I've never done anything like that before, I must have watched 1000 videos on YT about it as well as consulting the Bentley manual. It was super easy in the end. The diff was delivered to the awesome folks at Hornsby Diffs and will be back in a few weeks. I also replaced the diff bushings with some Nolathane ones.  Really looking forward to getting it back and getting back to the track or even the skidpan.
    • yeah... the 13kg/mm springs weren't always in there, I had 10kg/mm but doing a few SMSP commanded heavier front springs. It's so good now going into T1 and T2, just need more seat time and real tyres.
