Upgrading Turbo

Got a 1993 model, R33 skyline with everything pretty much being stock as except for the BOV and the exhaust system.

Recently looked at getting the turbo rebuilt and high-flowed due to the turbo pretty much being stuffed as it sqeals at 4,500RPM or more.

The other option I've now come across is getting a new turbo which will produce more power then rebuilding my current turbo and high-flowing it.

Going to upgrade the turbo to a GT3071. What I would like to know is there anything else required in upgrading to this turbo such as oil lines, water system, fuel system or anything?

I've got Hardcore Racing at Slacks Creek carrying out the work for me. They've stated that other things need to be done. I just need to be sure that they do need to be done rather then hearing them say "this has to be done as well" just so they can make a few extra $$'s from me.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Instead of spending big money straight up, work out what the squeal is and it may be a simple fix.

If the car is stock, there is an absolute shitload of supporting mods you will need with that turbo upgrade. Before any work is done, get them to write you out a list of their proposed work and what will be required.

Also check out the RB25 turbo upgrade thread to see what others are running to support a turbo similar to what you are after.

Thats not entirely correct mate. All depends on the hiflow, and what other turbo you would be looking at.

Your best bet is to use the search button.

Read all the threads about the GCG Hi-Flows.

There is a loads of information that will answer questions you arfe yet to even think of :D

What I would like to know is there anything else required in upgrading to this turbo such as oil lines, water system, fuel system or anything?

Fuel system, Engine management, clutch, tyres, brakes

There is more to making more power than just bolting on a big turbo and driving away

To do it all properly i'd budget 10k.

Turbo (hiflow) - 1800 (i think they are that price)

PowerFc/Tuning - 1600

Clutch - 1200-1500

I/C - 1000

Fuel pump/Injectors - 1200

Decent brake upgrade - 1000

Labour to fit it all - 1000 (at least)

Your @ $9000 already. ;) Mods aint cheap if you want it done properly and are paying retail prices.

the above prices are only estimates, somethings might be to either side of the price.

I've had 2 mech's already look at the turbo and they've both determined that it's the turbo. It only sqeals at 4,500+RPM which is when I'm hitting full boost.

One of the mech's let me put my hand down in towards the turbo and feel the small bolt/fan thing to which i was able to move back and forward and a mil. Both mech's felt this and said it's not at all a good sign for the turbo. Possibly if it moved left to right which it isn't doing that. They've stated that the inpropella fan is rubbing up against the housing.

If I do however need to have the oil lines, etc etc changed to suit a turbo upgrade (which bolts straight on), then thats fine. I just dont want to be bullshitted to just for the business to make a few extra $$'s at the sake of their lies.

Later on, I'm planning to also upgrade the clutch and also have a intercooler put on. Those are really the only mods I want to have done to it. That should easily gain me 180-200rwKW's I've been told which I'd be happy with.

Since the sqealing though, i've seem to have lost a great deal of power. Not sure if I'm use to it or if the car has actually lost the power it use to have (which is what I think has happened), but i just dont feel the kick anymore when taking off and I also dont thrash the car, so leaves me to think its lost it's power that it use to once have.

Hey mate

There are a few mods obviously that needs to be done to put the GARRETT GT28 and GT3071R series turbos on the RB motor.

What we can do is take you Rb25 exhaust housing and mate it to either the

- GT28RS

- GT2535R

- GT2540R

- GT3071R

Obviousy new lines would be needed, but you can use your original dump/front pipe, or we can supply one awell.

For pricing, PM me and I'll give you some more details

Thanks

If you only are after 180-200rwkw, get another stock turbo and don't waste your cash on a larger item.

any larger turbo will require cooler, clutch, fuel (pump and injector) changes, all $$$

Very interested, however, I'm located in Brisbane.

I'm looking at goin to hardcore next week and giving them the choice "Hey, I got $2,500. Want to do my turbo and intercooler for me all in one go or shall I come back another time for the intercooler or go else where".

When it comes to business, $2,500 is alot for them. So I can pretty much find someone who's interested in doin the job for that price considering I've heard of people buying intercoolers for around $200-$250 mark and the pipping kit, etc for about $300.

mate, have a good read of the advice given in this thread.

exhaust, i/c and new turbo does not a 200kw skyline make...

and offering $2500 will not necessarily get it all up and running smoothly, i'm pretty sure they will be unimpressed by that.

Hey mate

Not to be rude or anything, but all MODS need supprting mods to hold the power etc.

You could just upgrade the turbo, but to achieve its full potential you wouldrequire things like

- FUEL PUMPS

- INJECTORS

- ECU

etc

$2500 for a TURBO and INTERCOOLER PACKAGE if that includes install, that is HELL CHEAP

Out Turbo Upgrades Start from $1850 for the GT28RS

Thanks

hey mate i dont know if anyone has told u yet, but i recently spent a lot of money on my car thinking my turbo was blown because it squealed, but turns out it was just an exhaust leak... check the gaskets on the turbo, might save u a lot of time and money....

Yeah im gonna go out on a limb here and say you haven't had the car long enough or know nothing about modding a car.

You cant just throw on a massive turbo wind it up and away you go.

Your ECU, Fuel pump (maybe injectors) etc etc all need to be looked at.

Take the advise from the guys on the forum because they would know. There has been many a broken RB due to massive power and nothing to back it up.

You need to crawl before you can walk and run.
