After the GT-R Concept unveiled at the 35th Tokyo Motor Show in 2001, Nissan presents the GT-R PROTO, a vision of the next production model that will be on sale in 2007.

Exterior design

The design of the GT-R PROTO expresses GT-R heritage, coming from the first model PGC10 (1969) through R34 (1999), in a new and expressive form.

From its original roots as a pure-bred Japanese performance car, the new GT-R will now be a car sold globally, recognising its ability to compete with the very best in the world. For the first time in its history, the new GT-R will be designed as a specific body-style, and not derived from a sedan.

The form of the GT-R PROTO instantly expresses its purpose and potential, but in a way that is unique to this iconic car.

At the front end, the single centre air intake is designed to optimise airflow and to strongly link the identity of the GT-R from R34 to GT-R Concept (2001). Front fenders are uniquely designed through intensive analysis of the airflow around the tyres and the air vent behind the front fender also optimises aerodynamics. The sides of the body are sculptured towards the rear fender, expressing the power and dynamic tension of the car.

The overall shape of the body combines solid and smooth surfaces. The unique C-pillar crease is designed for optimum aerodynamics, reflecting the racing DNA of the GT-R.

The rear of the GT-R PROTO is strong and defined. The signature four ring-shaped tail lamps provide an immediate visual link to previous GT-R models. Four large-bore exhaust pipes complete the purposeful look.

The GT-R PROTO provides for the first time a clear indication of the final design direction for the production model to be launched in 2007, the first all-new GT-R in eight years.

In my oppinon the rear end of it looks similar to a corvette.

it looks like a f*kn damn turd

all these new cars coming out are getting uglier and uglier, is it just me or will i have to drink a slab of beer before i go buy a new car to make it look half decent?

i personally would like to see some of the newer cars take some more aggressive lines like some of the older generation of cars, for example the old holdens and fords look mean, and even the older skylines look damn tuff, as do the early rx series ... im sure we could make a tuff looking aerodynamic car

ffs, it looks like if u dont grab the handle to open the door properly soon we will just be slipping and sliding down our cars ...

just not on, cars need more character ...

Yeh I don't know about these new ones coming out eh...

They can't seem to get it right...

Mitsubishi have got it right with the evo 9

and toyota have it right with the chasers...

but nissan... since that renault c**t took over... things have gone downhill...

Looks SHIT HOT - very exotic - if they really look like that ill hold off on the R34 GTR and pour all my cash into one of them in 2 years. Looks very lambo, fezza, etc...

Where so I sign up.....

Dan

You have to remember that jap cars are an aquired taste. most of us here have been into the jap scene for a while now that we have grown to like the boxy-ish styling. swoopy lines are more familiar with italians (ferraris, lambos alfas). Just embrace the revolution, dont be scared to accept new styles.

Drawings very rarely resemble the final product, as the features have been exgaggerated massively.

    • Was there ever a model of the Stagea m35 that didnt have a badge on the grill? I thought I saw that somewhere, some aero edition or something? I cant find it again? davemoto
    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
