Recommended Posts

What would you do?

I drive a r31 to work everymorning, all it has is a 2 1/2 catback, i know for a fact its not THAT loud, not really loud at all, it seems that somone has complaind about it

Do i have to pay anything to get the test done? And if i fail what kinda fine's am i looking at, even tho its impossible to fail!

Do i have to pay even if it passes? This is pretty gay, all i was doing was driving to work :)

Do you have old annoying neighbours? Or a neighbour who is a hermit and have not seen for 4 years?

Damn Neighbours!!

not reallly, theres afew fags in my street that have loud cars, but on the paper it had the offence written down on a main road, now, if i went by at 80kms, i dont think you would hear much, and if i was at the lights, you cant hear anything at idol :)

Test costs $27

Sucks - but them's the breaks :)

I got a letter from when my car was stationary - they saw the large exhuast and assumed it was loud...

Which it was - put that's not the point

wow, $27 because somone wants to be a fag, thats $27 of fuel i could of had...

cops showed up at my house one morning and I crapped myself because they had complaints of a loud car by a neighbour... but it turned out it was my old mans Alfa that had been complained about! and the cop just spent 10mins chatting to him and left without so much as a warning!

Welcome to the wonderfull world of the EPA....i've had 3 this year :) ....thats what ya get with a exhaust that has been tested at 89.7db, and a slightly deaf cop. :) The best place to get a EPA notice is from a booze bus!!

There's 2 types of EPA letter,

Letter 1 is just a noise test, where you take your car along to any of the licensed tester that are on the back of info notice that you recieved. (my personnel pick is Cheltenham :D ) The tester/exhaust shop bloke, will just test the db level of the car....the lucky number is <90db.

Letter 2, is a trip to the EPA testing centre in Macleod. Now the secrect for this test, is to take everything back to stock, as they test emissions, check under the bonnet, and a noise test. This is the letter you don't won't!!!!!!!!

Now letter 1 did cost $27, it has now gone up in price to $30-$35 (i can't rememebr :D)

Letter 2 cost's nothing, unless you fail. If you fail, you get a "greeny" sticker (it's not a sticker and looks the same as a canary, except green and usally falls of the windscreen after one warm day). The greeny is a notice that the car has failed a EPA test, and has 28 days to be fixed or be taken off the road. You can't sell the car with this sticker on...basically the same deal as a canary.

Hope that helps B)

Yup, when i went for mine it was like $35. The guy only chanrged me once because i failed the first time with a whopping 111DB, got him to make me a custom end pipe which decreased it to 2 1/4inch and a normal mulfer and i just passed (89DB).

Mate you should pass no problems, simple cuz i had a 3 inch all the way including dump and with that custom end piece it passed.

Mind you i got home and straight away swapped my beautiful 4.5inch cannon on :)

His car is N/A different bag of fishes.

90dB is VERY quiet.

a STOCK GTR exhaust wont even pass anymore since the Gov't changed the rules a while ago.

You could well be over. Only way to know it go for the test

I didnt think i was too loud but i cracked in @ 120dB and that was @ 4500rpm not the correct 4800rpm which they didnt even bother going to :)

Its totally absured yes, you do have to pay $35 for the test.. even if you pass. So much for innocent until proven guilty :)

An EPA wasnt even heard of 3-4 years ago in general terms like it is today.

It simply put is nothing more than revenue raising from the Bracks Gov't.

Not the EPA themselevles are they are just contractors doing the bidding of the wonderful Victorian Gov't.

I know ill be voting a certain filthy scumbag out of office come election time

what do you expect driving skylines around.........every dumb ass cop knows they can defect a skyline; 90% of em are illegally modified whether the owner sees it that way or not. Bottom line is your in the wrong. You can keep telling yourself your not and keep paying the fines. Me personally i f*cked off my skyline for a stock s2000. Sure its not as quick but at least i dont get pulled over and fined every week for something or another and i can drive it where i want, when i want wihtout any trouble.

ctjet: Since when should a choice of car be restricted because of potential harrassment? Some are not, but many of the things they defect you for are ridiculous, so everyone is not always in the wrong or trying to be, like you suggested.

Do you have a H pattern on your gearknob? Do you need one to be able to drive? Well apparently you do but most manual drivers would disagree and I certainly wouldn't let someone drive my car who needs one. I could go on about other ridiculous defects, but I CBF.

And don't be unclear on it, there's nothing stopping someone who doesn't like you, from putting in a smoky vehicle report so you too have to pay the $35.

If you are keen on badmouthing skylines and their drivers, wtf are you doing on *this* forum? Just because you'd be happy to live under a dictatorship doesn't mean the rest of us would, no need to preach your propaganda here.

Yello4: thanks for the clarification, I don't think I've actually seen someone explain the epa process on the forum yet.

--well since right now you moron. Yes driving a skyline will get you pulled over. Yes you will get defected if you have a loud exhaust,BOV, any other modifications that the cop thinks are illegal. Yes cops hate skylines.

--I've been there and done that with the EPA's on my last car; r33 gts-t with straight pipe exhaust, no cat, no resonator. Sounds fantastic but what do you expect of course i got done leb style by the cops and EPA. With my current car i get left alone which is why i had to get rid of my skyline; i loved that car to bits but i cbf with all the crap that came along with it and i didnt' want to have it stock.

--I'm not bad mounthing skylines or their drivers you f*ckwit. All i said is what do you expect? If you have a skyline with an exhaust or modified your bound to get an EPA sooner or later...people put illegal modifications on then bitch and moan when they get done. Lets face it even with a stock skyline you will still get pulled over; i returned mine to stock just before i sold it and i still used to get pulled over for random checks. Nothing was illegal on the car and the cops would me go.

Its simple..if you want to get left alone keep your car legal. If you want to have all the modifications etc on it then go ahead, but dont come on here bitching like a whore when you get done........

Unfortunately that is quite a true post.

I am sure there are a massive amount of other illegal cars also on the road, not neccesarily illegally modifed but are in an illegal state. Skylines are easy pickings. A standard commodore with 4 bald tyres doesnt scream pull me over but a BOV on a skyline does.

In my experience it is down to three things in this order:

How you drive

Where you drive

What you drive

In nearly 8 years of driving I have never been pulled over or breathalised so I will reserve judgement until then.

My 2c :D

When i get my next EPA notice, i'm thinking of taking DIY photographs....or maybe a short film

Listen here keyboard jockey

you can be defected for something as dumb as an empty washer bottle.

But im sure in all your wisdom, and expiriance of the greater world you already know that...

As a question, do you check yours everytime you drive out of your driveway?

Just incase?

Even a stock car can be defected. Explain how that works.

Driving a skyline should not make you a target, and i'd like to know where your figure of 90% are illegally modified.

If your gonna make a statement with some figures your gonna have to back it up with some credential about you being an expert (this will be the thing we are all waiting for i bet)

If a car passes an EPA there should be no fee as a large number so pass especially with some of the Jap Brand exhausts which are under the dB limit anyway

It's because you're black.

:(

oh well, its ok, the new beast is up and on the road B) , 1inch exhuast of powahhh!!

Well, i dont have time todo this EPA test, so now what? Yes i mabey 5mins from the chetenhame exhuast shop, but im working everyday! :)

    • Actually everyone on the roads was really well behaved. The only person that did any minor tailgating was a local hoon in a Turbo Focus. Unfortunately we weren't going the same way so there was no grand initial D touge battle. Lots of people pulled over and let me through. The amount of "Hey man nice car, omg skyline, nice 34 man woo" was suprising. Like really suprising. Like almost annoying. My partner was obviously surprised, she'd never seen anyone in the real world point out the car/like the car/want to chat about the car before, so to have like 3 people per day mention it was notable, I could finally say SEE? SOMEONE THINKS THEY'RE COOL. Everyone was also pretty suprised about the weather. Every day was dry and about ~13-14C. Mount Wellington had a sign that said they close the gates at 9pm and I was heading up there at about ~7:30. It was VERY apparent that conditions were getting significantly worse by the minute on the way up and down. The road on the mountain was terrible though, it's no driving road. I have various suspension related questions now. Luckily it was only about 20 minutes from where we were staying to the top of the mountain as said Google maps. We only had the 2 nights in Hobart. We went to the Farm Gate Market though which was really good - And went down to the Hastings Thermal springs/caves down there during the day. I'd definitely be up for going back again, so luckily there's a few more sights yet to see. Didn't get to do the west coast/queenstown/cradle mountain so this was supposed to be a 'scouting' trip anyway of sorts if I were to one day do/take part in/organize a more car-focused trip. As for the boat, it wasn't bad. Well it was bad, but not in the way you're thinking. We did the night trip which leaves at 6:45 (though you have to be there ~2 hours earlier) and arrives the next morning at about 6am. There is nothing to do on the ship. If you plan accordingly and bring a book/tablet/show to watch/charger you can just chill out, take some Travacalm and just sleep through it. The food there is an extremely basic buffet that costs $32 a plate, or $14 for a $3 pizza. The way back we had a travel kettle and a few different types of cup noodles and made our own tea/coffee in the room. This was a far superior way to do it. At the very least book one of the rooms with beds. I guess as we were in the off season we didn't have room mates. You get an option for rooms with 4 beds (2x bunks) or a room with just the two bottom beds. There's also some option for a deluxe queen bed but it's much pricer. We've been on sleeper trains in Asia before so we figured this is similar (and it was)
    • You just gotta be really, really, really clear and decisive with what you want your end product to be. 99% of people who want this conversion aren't "I want to run a 295 front tyre!" so they don't really need the widebody. They just want the OEM body to look a little less dumpy, so bonnet, bar, skirts job done with some camber, stretch, slam. It's when you want that, but then decide to pivot later you get big problems. See also if you're willing to get an all in one fibreglass bar, and you're willing to accept fibreglass problems like cracking the entire item on a driveway, instead of just a piece attached to the bottom, etc etc etc. Decide this all before buyin'.
    • After @Kinkstaah debacle, I'd never want to try and get it right 😛
    • The hood lines up with the fenders. The front bar doesn't perfectly line up with the fenders where the wheel arch is. You have to 'squeeze' the front bar 'in' as it wants to naturally flare out and be longer on the sides. There's a few threads where people notice this when they only swap a GTR style bumper and front bar. Unless you have genuine OEM items - you may be better served getting conversion kits. There are GTT bumpers to fit GTR hoods. There are GTR hoods (non genuine) to fit the GTT bracketry. MAY
