AMS
tappets can also be a bit noisy sometimes, but they just require adjusting Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/91100-mitsubishi-fto/page/2/#findComment-1643036 Share on other sites
Wink
Brother owned a 97 GPX and like others have said, it's more than a match for the ITRs. Revs beautifully and with the Apexi N1 exhaust it had on, the sweetest sounding car. atticus
i drove one about 2 years back. i dunno if it was just a shit one that had been flogged, or maybe theyre all like that, but to get any response i had to hit the floor with the gas. i guess you'll drive it before you buy it, so its your own discretion. the one i drove was also the tiptronic auto. i dont recommend that at all. The auto box is really quite good in these cars by all reports and only very slightly slower than the manual versions. Its the same auto technology Mitsubishi are still hyping up today. atticus
yeah. well i thought something was a bit weird in it. then i saw how my g/fs old man drove it. maybe that was why. . . either way, dont trash the auto, they f**k up. ecl
not a bad everyday tho the manual is the best.. apparently the auto/tiptronic version is ALOT slower in the case of the FTO. with this said, i heard manual FTO's are hard to come by Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/91100-mitsubishi-fto/page/2/#findComment-1643469 Share on other sites

HPI did a large article with a side by side comparison and the auto was only a touch slower. krzysiu
Everytime i see an FTO its got little pink things inside and all this little fluffy dice. They are a bloody chicks car. And true it does look like a hairdressers car, so does the Mazda MX-5 Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/91100-mitsubishi-fto/page/2/#findComment-1643815 Share on other sites
scathing
tho the manual is the best.. apparently the auto/tiptronic version is ALOT slower in the case of the FTO. with this said, i heard manual FTO's are hard to come by Yeah, when I was looking about 75% of the cars on the market had Tiptronic. In the end, the Tiptronic gearbox is still a torque converter, as opposed to a clutch pedal-less manual. So you still get all the problems in terms of powertrain loss and deadened throttle response. The INVECS II system the Tiptronic has is nicish (it was also added to the slusho in the Lancer MR I got a drive of, which didn't have Tiptronic) but its still not amazing. All it does is modify the shift points depending on how aggressively you're driving. I think its the biggest waste of time for a sports car ever. So imagine that, instead of having a "power" and "economy" switch on your slusho its now running off a delta sensor. So not only do you still get the pain in the arse problems of having the thing short shift if you decide to give it a thrash after commuting for ages....but you have to give it some stick for a little while before it decides to go into the "power" mode. At least with the switch the shift algorithm change is instantaneous, but then I suppose if you wanted instantaneous response from a gearbox you would have bought a real one instead of a little girl's one. inasin
Only the GTO has twin turbo and 4wd. I've never heard FTO carries the same gear. Personally I thing they look ok although they're might not be mitsubishi's best design in term of engine wise. However had they installed the MIVEC from the EVO series with 4wd would be nice that would get my ATTENTION Edited October 15, 2005 by inasin Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/91100-mitsubishi-fto/page/2/#findComment-1643931 Share on other sites
autorenegade
i personally hate the fto, it looks awesome but my frends one is heavily underpowered and compared to other front drive sports cars like preludes and celicas it very slow, but i have to admit it looks very nice, so if u wanna impress people who know nothing about cars then buy 1, buy if u want a car that can accelerate i wouldnt reccomend 1 Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/91100-mitsubishi-fto/page/2/#findComment-1644023 Share on other sites
Bliksem
I owned an FTO before my R33. I think they're a great car. With the new laws in place for P-Plate drivers in NSW these sortof cars would be an ideal choice. The one I had was a Manual GPX (the MIVEC model). Basically no balls below 5000rpm, but once you had it up in the rev range they have a fair bit of poke. the best thing about them in my opinion is the exhaust note, very deep and throaty, I still love that V6 note. MIVEC
Believe it or not, I took my FTO over an R33. Beaut lil cars that excel in their catagory (n/a fwd) Unfortunately (as seen by a few posts here) people just don't know a lot about these cars. yaf28f
I actually still have a 94 FTO GPX manual and r R32 GTR. I'd have to say that if your going to compare a RWD/AWD turbo car with an FWD FTO, of course it's not going to preform impressive. I think the FTO is a great daily driver, more fuel efficent, handles great and in some smaller round abouts in Canberra I think I can do them quicker than the GTR. Sure it's underpower because the power doesn't really come on until the MIVEC kicks in which is all the way up in the 5500rpm ish. But seriously, in it's class it's one of the best. and it definately more entertaining to look at than an integra. Kaido_RR
i like FTO. for its type FWD,NA it performs good; between an ae86 with 4age (with some minor headwork (port and polish)) and a pretty stock mivec fto, the fto pulled up in front. they are well power, handle good and over-all a nice car for its class Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/91100-mitsubishi-fto/page/2/#findComment-1645411 Share on other sites
Dr_Inferno
FTOs are just beautiful, i can only wish i could drive or hear one. as for the awd/TT version, i think some people might be getting a car made up by Polyphony Digital for the Gran Turismo series. It was a 600hp AWD tubocharged monster called the Mitsubishi FTO LM. At one time i thought it extisted as well, don't feel bad. Sounds great in all editions of the game. someone made a comment about the FTO stealing design cues from the supra: more like it was designed in the same vein as the GTO. Sort of a little brother to the GTO. Given the opportunity, i think i would snatch one of these up. Sadly, they were never brought to the states. We just got this piece of trash Eclipse/Talon/Laser. Such a piece of ghey. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/91100-mitsubishi-fto/page/2/#findComment-1645424 Share on other sites
