hay guys i am trying to choose what diff to use in my r33 gtst. i want the diff for street and track work. so i don't want a 2 way mechanical lsd. i didnt know weather to rebuild my std one and shim it up a bit tighter, or go for a 1.5 way mechanical lsd? my house mate has a 1.5 way in his 180sx and it tends to push the car into the corner and make it understeer a little. what to do?

what experiances have you guys had?

what ratio's are you all running? i also want to make my car a little taller (more top speed)

what ratio do i have std?

cheers,

boz

That slight understeer with the 1.5 way may not be diff related, and probably fixable with adjusting suspension / swaybar settings a bit.

I'd suggest a 1.5way mech, but if you don't like it, rebuilt stocky or maybe a 1way might be the go. Unless you're drifting, for a street car occasional track drive, a good stocky does the job.

im using a 2-way on the street and for track which isnt the best idea....il probly screw it up soon, but i enjoy it, its fun. Ryan from Kansai uses a cusco 1.5way and it doesnt knock and shutter too much in his daily street use and is relatively good on the track, so maybe go a 1.5 way mechanical

A 1.5 way LSD will understeer a little more on turn-in than an open diff, but it will be noticably better than a 2 way.

As other people have said, you can probably dial out most of that turn-in understeer by adjusting your other suspension components and the benefits of having a LSD outweigh the turn-in response of an open one.

While you can shim up a standard viscous LSD it wont make it much better, the centre still opens up over time.

If you want a good diif without the understeer, and you dont drift, its simple, get a 1 way mechanical centre. Used to have one in my 33 and it was brilliant! A bit too tight for shopping centres but it was great on the track :(

thanks mate what is the difference between a 1 and a 1.5way mechanical lsd? when will the 1 way lock up? i thought the 1.5 locked under power but not on coast?

cheers,

boz

    • Sounds good Hmm suppose the main thing is, how much do you care about this car? The filler doesn't make for a very good water barrier lol. If there was a tiny little bit of rust forming now, that in 3 to 5 years time becomes obvious under the paint (starts to bubble up), would it bother you?
    • I already have the ability to datalog the voltage... what I can't do is correlate it to what the gauge is showing when I'm looking at the data at a later date. Or something like this. Except getting the oil to 125C+ involves me going 200+kmh at the track so you can imagine this is a little tricky unless I do something like note what the voltage is when I am at the top of 5th gear so I have a point to reference on. Drove car today. O2 still reading richer because hopefully not a leak instead of massive restriction I've introduced. Car really doesn't sound like a LS. It's quite strange. Pulled a bit of fuel out up top. This does potentially explain why my spark plugs looked like the car was running pretty over-rich. If I was tuning it to a ~12.7 which in reality was far richer than that in the past. It will be handy to have the dyno WB to compare my WB to to compare notes that's for sure. At this point I'm happy to just sit in the passenger seat and tune the thing given I've got about 7 million hours on the platform lol.
    • Yeah I understand you have to pay for an updated map or subscription service or something. But I can't even find a current map for Australia. My map is dated 2017, but didn't this car version still sell in Australia until 2021?   Also, just as an aside, the navigation system warns you of traffic incidences ahead.....why would they include that on a map they knew is not receiving live information. I am forever going to be warned of an incident that probably existed for 30 minutes 8 years ago.
