I just received the following letter in the mail (abridged):

In addition to a top level comprehensive cover, agreed value and lower rates dependings on usage, Shannons cover for cars [now] includes:

- 14 day vehicle hire if your vehicle is stolen (up yo $1500);

- Cover while taking part in a professional course designed to improve skills on the road;

- Replacement, recoding or rekeying of locks and keys following damage to, or loss or theft of, your keys (up tp $1000);

- Multi-vehicle discount if you insure more than one car or bike with us.

How awesome is that? I haven't called to clarify yet, but I would be quite confident in saying that SAU-organised track/skidpan/driver training days (which are all CAMS approved) fall neatly under that category!!!

So bring on the Shannons insurance, and BRING ON THE TRACKDAYS!!!!

very cool if this is the case... i think i might be changing to shannons if so.... now I'm just waiting for my membership for SAUNSW as I just sent it off the form today :(

Do you work for Shannons?

If so, can you clarify whether or not SAU (CAMS affiliated) driver training/skid pan/track days are covered by this clause? :(

Would be nice but I was told they wont cover any "timed" events.

Whether they be  racetrack or motorkhana in other words no CAMS events.

Only driver training days...

None of our trackdays are timed. They're all just private practice days.

Skidpan days are timed, but they are very obviously designed with "improving skill on the road", so I would question that the "timing" of the skidpan courses rules these days out.

track days etc, im 90% no.

definately for driver training courses though, as long as there are licensed instructors/marshalls present.

Yeah, I asked about the track day thing about two weeks ago. It was a no unfortunatey. Only driver training at recognised locations run by recognised instructors. The Mt Cotton venue for instance up here in Brisbane would be ok.

I have had both the GTR and mini with Shannon's for the last few years. They are great to deal with.

if the location and instructors arent 'recognised' by Shannons, you can always refer them to us and we can look into it too.

but hey, atleast we are willing to offer cover for such an event, something which most other insurers wont offer...

How long has Shannons been offering coverage for driver training?

NRMA has been offering it since at least the beginning of the year, to my knowledge. As long as you tell them that you're doing an advanced driver training course (which of course is going to be off-street) beforehand, then you're covered in case of an incident.

Not sure if other insurers offer this, but I know that AAMI will even offer you a discount on premiums if you take advanced driver training courses from one of their approved trainers. If they don't offer you coverage while you're attending that course I'll be surprised.

So its great that Shannons is offering it, but its hardly groundbreaking.

with the recoding, rekeying etc, would that mean ignition barrel and all locks would be replaced for a damaged key??

Its Replacement or recoding of the keys only due to damage, loss or theft (up to $1,000)

if your car was broken into and your locks etc were damaged, they would be covered under your standard policy.

We have been offering this since 21/11/2005. Great that other companies are offering this also, even better if they will cover your "modified" vehicle too, as this may be an issue with some of your main stream insurers...

    • I'm normally copping my own abuse from neglecting my daily drivers. "Those suspension bushes will last a bit more", "Don't worry about the oil leak, just keep topping it up". The project cars I'm always doing things slowly on them as I'm wanting them to be done better, and neater, and nicer. Luckily I don't have to deal with 18 year old Matt's "Learning to wire" stuff in the project cars. And there's only one piece of wiring I'm displeased about in the Landcruiser, and it's about to be cut out... However, the box loads of parts that have been going through this place lately for the Landcruiser... Brake pads Brake Rotors Full handbrake overhaul Wheel Bearings Seals Swivel hubs Steering Boxes Half the suspension joints Shocks Air bags (Ones to go in the rear springs for towing) Water pump Timing kit Lower timing case Harmonic Balancer Radiator Lots of other little seals and shits Gas struts for the bonnet New power window switches And god knows what else I've forgotten... Ha ha ha I have my fingers crossed the pinion seals don't start leaking on the diffs, that the transfer case doesn't leak, and the gearbox input shaft doesn't leak, nor the rear main seal. As they're about the only seals I haven't replaced in the driveline! I'm seriously eyeing off buying new caliper rebuild kits front and rear brake calipers... I'll probably recheck all the valve clearances soon too, and hopefully, it should be all good and sweet to haul some long distance trips again!
    • Every time I pull my 3x gauges out of the console and see the crack-addict way that I did the wiring, and I just can't bring myself to tear it all apart and "make it nice", because it is currently working. In fact, the last time I was in there I probably made it worse.
    • The best part is when you own the car long enough that you look back and find your OWN ham fisted amateur shit!
    • The annoying part about neglect, is when you start to replace one thing, and find ten more broken things. Ham fisted monkey repairs you normally only find out about when trying to do something unrelated! Ha ha   Neglect you can kind of anticipate the huge costs to fix it all. Ham fistedness is normally a shock the first time your work on a new old car, as everything "looked" good before.
