i am assuming you have octalink cranks at the moment and not old XT that is square taper? also what gearing are you running? triple, double or single? also shimano octalink and isis drive spindles are different so you can't just swap the cranks over.

Any Real Performance Gain From Cold Air Intakes....
mad082 replied to IM-32-FK's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
also it should be said that the gains aren't that great. people go on about it being some massive performance mod and if they go up against a car without it they are going to leave it for dead. this is far from the truth. the fact that most cars these days come with some form of intake designed to suck air from a location that alloys cool air, in most cases a CAI setup will net you a gain of maybe 5kw in an extreme case, but more than likely only 1 or 2kw. where people often are misled is thay they will put a new highflow panel filter in at the same time as doing the CAI setup and think that all the gains were from the CAI. as for the power loss from hot air, that is also made to be a bigger deal than it is. when i took my magna to the drags, my quickest ET and top speed was achieved with the snorkel to the airbox removed and it was sucking air from the engine bay. often people go a bit overboard trying to make a CAI and end up with no gain or even a loss because because they have added so much restriction that they have negated any gains from having a cooler intake air. -
you are pretty much right. the standard colour of bulbs is probably the worst for seeing in the fog with. very yellow lights like the s13's are better to be seen in the fog with and if you want to see through the fog you are best off with very blue bulbs (you know the ones that are so blue they make hid's look yellow). the very blue lights will go through the fog much better, but they are shit to drive with at night normally. a mate had some in his 33 as the highbeam lights and you could see better with lowbeam on that you could with the highbeam on because it was so blue it didn't light things up very well.

no, a back pedal brakes doesn't count as a fixie, LOL

this is a bit of an oddball idea, but how well does the aircon work when the engine temp is cold? if it works ok when the engine temp is cold then it could be the heater tap is stuffed and not closing
-
not sure what is mentioned in the other thread, but possibilities are the dryer is dead, the condenser is dead, there is a heap of debris between the condenser and the radiator reducing airflow, the thermostat is shot, or the temp sensor for the unit is dead.

the CAS is located on the front of the engine. it is a round thing with i think 3 bolts located at even intervals around the outside. each bolt will be in an ovalised slot allowing movement of the CAS. this should only be done with a timing light and having locked the ecu into timing mode first. this way you can monitor how much you have altered the timing. if you go too far and get pinging/detonation/knock and don't realise it, it can result in engine damage. also make a mark on where the timing was before you started so you know how much you have moved it if you want to back it off a bit.

i think you will find that the excels you see without the foglight on fall into 1 of 2 categories. 1: accidently turned it off and haven't realised it yet 2: the bulb is blown

well technically speaking, no gtr is awd. they are rwd with the ability to drive the front wheels when traction is lost on the rear wheels. well that is my understanding of the attesa system anyway. they aren't like a subaru where they have a 50/50 split at all times.

fyi, i just accidently watched a rogercordia video on youtube so i'm in a bad mood now something else that shits me off about the current fixy trend is that people call them fixy's even if they aren't fixed wheel. if they have a freewheel they are single speeds and have been around for quite a few years now, but were generally mtb's or 26 or 29" bmx bikes with the odd road bike version. just because it can have a fixed wheel attached to it doesn't automatically make it a fixy. if you are running the freewheel then it is a single speed. and technically 'fixy' isn't a new category of bike. they are just track bikes with brakes added to make them legal (if they have brakes). some will be done with retro styling to make them look like bikes that were around 50 years ago. even flat bar fixies aren't new. all that is different is that the original ones had bars shaped like a boomerang and the new ones have mtb bars on them. so to anyone that is riding a fixy to be different, you aren't different, you are just 40 years behind the rest of us. what next? is holden going to bring back the FJ and revive the old 186 and 202 engines to put in them? would they expect people to go and buy a car that handles like rhino on ice and has a 3.3L 6 cylinder engine that can put out an impressive 80kw? no. everyone would think it is a bucket of shit and not touch it. but apprently the cycling world is different. what was once shit and hopeless is now shit and hopeless but cool. maybe i should see the guy i sed to work with who still has his original fixed wheel racer from when he raced back in the 60's so i can be cool. in fact i would be super cool because it even has a bent frame and forks from being crashed, meaning that when you turn the pedals nearly hit the front tyre because it sits about 2" back from where it should.

+1 for the 25. much nicer engine. more power up top and much more power down low. however i would go all out and get a halfcut so you can get the stronger gearbox as well (just noticed you mention a gts-4, so i'm not sure how compatiable the rb25 box is to the rb20, or if there is even any difference with the gts-4 boxes between the 20 and 25).

fixies are the bike world equivilant of the emo fringe. stupid in theory, stupid in practice and only done because it's the in thing.
-
yeah all 4 should come on with the lights, and then get brighter when the brakes are put on. have a look at the bulbs in the inside lights are a proper brake light (with the 2 filaments in the bulb). if they only have a standard bulb with the single filament then that will be problem. also check that the bulb is installed properly, because if it isn't making contact properly then they won't work. you could also try swapping 1 of the bulbs from the outside to the inside to see if that works or not. if it doesn't change things then you know it is a wiring issue.

did a bit of research. the capo comes in at around 19 pounds. that's 8.6kg, which is still rather light, but about where i thought it would be. bikes are very decieving with their weight. 8kg can feel much lighter because it is on a bigger item, yet if you put 8kg into someone the size of a football it will feel much heavier. and since i'm bored, to give you an idea of weights (all weights from manufacturer's websites): wheels: 1995g pair tyres: 350g each cranks: 741g with 2 chainrings. second chainring only adds approx 50g BB: 160 to 300g depending on model used handlebars: 680g stem: 180g seat post: 345g chain: approx 300g so without frame, forks, pedals, freewheel, headset, brakes, seat, and grips you are up around 5kg. frame and forks would weigh close to 2kg. i have done a few build-ups using kitchen scales to weigh parts before putting the bike together and you get shocked the first time you do it. you pick the bike up and think it's really light and then tally up the weights and find that while it is light in comparison to other bikes, the actual weight of it is pretty high. the wheels are always the heaviest part of the bike. also an interesting fact: the UCI (world cycling body) has a minimum weight that bikes must be to compete. it is 15lbs, which is around 6.8kg.

if you are able to run full advance without pinging (unless you are running c16) then i wouldn't be suprised if your timing belt is 1 tooth out. or you just don't know what pinging sounds like. but then again the ecu is probably knocking 15 degrees of timing out because it is hearing the knock, so you could probably back your timing off a bit and not lose any power.

there is a thread about it in the general auto section. just post your vin and people will post you the results. i have it on my other computer but i don't think it is setup at the moment.

4.35 jiggawatts at the wiperblades out of curiosity, why did you chose to go a SAFC over a remap? the cost of purchasing and tuning a SAFC wouldn't be that much less than a remap, however the remap would give much better gains.

you left out .... D: make your knees explode by trying to push against the pedals spinning also rowan, i think you will find that the capo weighs a bit more than 5.5kg. it would probably be closer to 7 or 8kg. maybe even 9kg. redline do a kids race bike designed for 5yr olds that is basically a mini fixie which weighs in at 5.7kg. a high end carbon road bike will come in at 7kg. yes that has the extra weight of the gears, but the extra weight of the gears would be 500g max. (10 speed dura-ace cassette weighs 163 grams, which would be canceled out by the weight of the freewheel, derailleurs weigh a bit under 240 grams for the pair and the shifter part of the brake lever would weigh about 250g for the pair as well. and then once you take into account the fact that dura-ace cranks weigh about 250grams or more less than the cranks on the capo, plus the brake calipers weigh at least 100g less, pluss the fact that a carbon frame usually weighs a few hundred grams less than an alloy frame, i'd say that your bike would easily weigh well over 7kg)
-
oh and the old fixies are the ones that weigh heaps. they are the ones that are worth lots because they are collectors items because they are originals. pretty much all the new ones will be lightweight alloy frames like yours. some of the cheaper ones (like the apollo ones) will be cromo frames, but they are only $700. the alloy frames are made by the companies who designers are the types who think they are a good idea. the chromo frames are made by the companies who think they are a shit idea and are only doing them to make money, LOL
-
you only just realised that fixies are a fashion accessory and if it wasn't for that reason they would never have been made again other than for track riding? wow, talk about slow, LOL. as for the helmet and lights, i like to use the example "what gives you the right to decide what laws you obey and what you don't? in that case i'm going to ignore the law and murder you" as for riding on the footpath, that is a local/state thing. in qld you are allowed to ride on the footpath unless otherwise signed.

you could always give the CAS a good twist in the advanced direction. will make it pick up much quicker, but the engine won't last that long.

people work of a % markup and don't just put on a set dollar value profit. in my industry a $10 price increase at the manufacturer can increase the retail price by about $40 once everyone has put their markup on. also they are a business not a charity. their aim is to make money. so as long as people keep paying the big prices for them they will keep charging it.
