hey guys, ive been shopping for a torque wrench and was just wondering if you guys knew anywhere that gave good prices on these.

ill only be using it once on my car so $400 seems like a bit of a bitch to pay for something i'd use once, and my mate with all these kinds of tools is overseas!

ive been getting prices of up to 400-500 for a stanley or snap-on one but are there other brands you guys recommend that wouldnt break the bank?

Warren and Brown do a good wrench, so I am told. As I'm only a once-a-quarter user I bought one from Gasweld for just under $100 and is calibrated during manufacture. The one I bought does 20-150ftlbs. Gasweld had Stanley wrenches for just over $200 on sale.

If you google torque wrenches you'll find a few online stores that may have better prices than you've looked at.

For what it's worth, three out of three mechanics I spoke to about them all said they only torque stuff like head bolts and don't bother with anything else. But I vaguely remember you have an engine to rebuild...?

yeah the heads almost off, just need to undo the head bolts and it'll be right to come out, i just dont want to waste any time with parts and tools etc.

ive heard warren and brown are the shiznit too, thats the one my brother in law whos a mechanic told me to look into.

do you think i could use one of them gasweld ones too? i want something i can rely on but if its going to give me problems with my engine later then i'd rather spend the big $$ on something better.

Ive got a W&B one, have used it heaps and is accurate every time I get it checked. It doesn't run off a spring like other cheaper ones like strap on.

And I use it all the time, mostly for wheel nuts

If anyone is still looking at this thread and are interested in torque wrenches then PM me, i happen to work for Warren and Brown, and yes our torque wrench's are the best in the business, they are the most accurate (less then +-2%), and are supposedly used by the McLaren F1 team, (don't quote me, it just what i have heard round the office),they are designed and manufactured completly in OZ (Melbourne), if i get any interest i will try and do a group buy, and i know what people are like with showing off with there tools so i will try and get the sidcrome ones we rebadge for them instead of W&B which not many people have heard of. Honestly, probably only need 5 or so for a group buy, i would always expect somebody would want something slightly different, whether it be range or size, which isn't a problem, i would say most people would want 3/8" 5-110Nm (4-90ft.lbs.) or 1/2" 30-270Nm (20-220ft.lbs.), these are the very accurate deflection beam type that only work in one direction, and don't have a ratchet head, (ratchet head can be purchased seperately but not really a necessity) or if people only want a basic one with the twist handle adjustment and built in ratchet and uni-directional (think kingchrome) we sell those too.

Only thing is i wouldn't really know how to start a group buy through SAU, what channels of authorization i would need to go through. But if enough people are interested, this could be resolved.

battery any idea how much use an inaccurate torque wrench would be?

thenig if you wanted to offer one model a 1/2" 150nm one would probably be the best for most people....great opportunity, thanks for offering :D

    • Small update for the day... Turns out the intercooler and engine coolant hose kits are anything but complete....I probably should have counted better but it only really covers about half the coolant hoses in the car, it really just covers the visible stuff and pretends everything else doesn't exist (turbo water feed and returns and also heat exchanger lines through the 2 pumps and cooler) .In any case, I'm happier to have half reliable hoses than none, but a bit of a disappointment. Anyway...finger click (and 5 hours).....hoses in place, lots of spring clamps replaced with screw clamps, and engine coolant is on the pressure tester for the night.   Incidentally, upsized header tank is an Inifiniti factory option....not sure I'll ever do prod car racing in this but at least it is legal.
    • Just weld it onto the hot pipe. If you want it right after the turbo, put it right after the turbo. Or rip the comp cover off and drill and tap a hole into it.
    • hahaha glad I can rely on you two to go on a spiral at the drop of a problem! Some quick answers....the ducting is excellent top bottom and sides....everything that gets in goes through the coolers (noting the oil cooler redirects it out again, fair call if it is cooling 120o+) and the heat exchanger for the intercooler also has some scoops to pick up more than it's fair share too. I can't see going down the water spray track....no bueno for formal racing and a big risk for long rally days if you run out (plus I'm not clear if it is allowed there either yet).   Frankly, it must be possible to reliably put 400kw through a standard front end, the BMWs do it so I just need to work it out....I'm starting with reducing blockages in the way and adding some coolant capacity with a bigger header tank, flushing rad and making sure it was filled/bled properly (I didn't do the last coolant change); also taken measurements incase next step is a bigger/higher capacity custom radiator
    • wow, a completely stock GTR! I've got to admit, I have no idea from what you are describing....do you have  any idea where the "thump" comes from, and are you certain it is the HICAS light not something else like the cat overheat light?
    • nice work, welcome to the world of CAD! fabricating accurately in 3 dimensional space is beyond me....I almost always end up making something more than once...sorry I mean I extensively use prototyping
