Wasted Spark Ingnition

hi there,

this mod is suitable for rb20det, rb20de, rb25de and det(as long as you have an ingnitor pack on the cam cover) can be done for series 2 rb25s but you will require an ingnitor pack.

i have a cheeper alternative for all you people out there who keep losing coils and dont want to fork out big $$ for spitfire coils.

what you will require:

6 spark plug leads that are a suitable length to reach to where ever you decide to mount the wasted spark setup. i used champion steel ingition leads part number CH6106S for a holden commodore vs&Vt 3.8ltr but i suggest you buy them individuly as you can get the lengths much better as i found 2 of them are a bit to long

the replacement coil pack is what i was told is a buick(holden) tridon part number TIC032

side cutters,

soildering iron and solider, or crimpers and the correct crimping bits to clip on to the coil pack.

heat shrink

and between 1-2hrs to do.

step 1:remove coils and coil loom from the car. and decide where you want to mount the coils.

2: strip the coverings off the wiring so you can see where and what wire each one does.

3: lable the pink wires so you know what wire is for each coil. then cut off near the plug

4: for r32s you will need to make sure you dont cut off the ground wires from the ingnitor pack(7 wires) to the other small plug(3 wires) next to it. r33 has (6wires and 2wires so there is no ground wires to deal with)

5: you will need the white power wire from the 3 or 2wire plug as that is the power wire for the coil pack.

6. group together the pink wires in to 3 sets. 1 and 6, 2 and 5, 3 and 4.

7: i suggest you lable the front of the coil pack as you attach the wires to the coil pack as to save on any confusion later on.

8: attach the white wires to the pins showen on the pic. it doesnt matter what side of pins you use as long as all the white are on 1 side and pink are on the other side.

9. mount the coil pack in your engine bay. make sure that the pins on the back are not touching anything. i folded mine down and put shrink wrap over them just to be safe.

10: put the spark plug leads on the spark plugs and the coil pack in the correct order and plug in ingnitor pack.

11: if your car had dropped a coil then you should reset your ecu. but reset it anyway to be on the safe side.

12: start your car. if it doesnt start check that the leads are on the right plugs as its easy to accidently put (3 and 4) on (1 and 6). if its r32 check that you grounded the ground wire.

otherwise just check that you did wire everything up correctly.

i will try and get walk through pics if i do the conversoin again :( hope this helps

Hi,

I have an RB25DET series 2 in my car (ignitor in the coils)

I got an R32 Ignitor, just wondering if you can confirm how I need to wire this up?

I presume I should run the power from the R33 loom to the Buick coils, the R33 gnd to the gnd on the coil side of the ignitor, cyl 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 wires on the R33 loom, to the corrisponding wires on the ignitor.

Hi there.

strip off the inuslation off your coil pack loom and you should see what is happening. dont cut the plugs till you have labled what wires go to what spark plug. take photos as you go incase you forget somthing.

pink is the power so you put them on one side as i have. white is signal from the ecu to spark.

you dont need any grounds for the coil pack. as your using r33 coil pack loom you dont need to worry about a grounding loop that r32s have as they have an extra wire on the r32 ingnitor and on the other little plug has 3wires instead of the 2 that r33 have.

Have you given any thought to the resistance of the coils being different, which will affect the dwell period as well the current limiting. Electronic ignition systems are capable of dwell extension and also current limiting. The resistance of the coil will vary both things.

no, i am just following what others have been doing. this set up must work as it is used on 90% of the top rb powerd drift cars in NZ from what i was told by the guy who sells this as a made up kit.

i have some links to other websites with the info. this dus improve idle, acceleration and i found i got a little bit more fuel econamy and power.

and the guy who sells the set up

http://gdz1la.kol.co.nz/prod01.htm

there is also guys who use mitsi VR4 coils and other kinda coils.

These have been done many times on skylines and they do work. Won't be expensive at all.

I actually have a link from r31 skylines.com where they install it into an rb20.

If you want, I actually have a coilpack and leads that I was going to use on my car, but I was given a set of splitfires for christmas. I'm not looking for much.

all you need for the series 2 swap is a coil pack and mb the coil loom. im not sure on the series 2 coil loom will plug up to the coil pack as i dont even know anybody with a series 2 engine.

my set up cost me $140 all up from memory. i probly could have done it a bit cheeper if i had bought leads seperatly. plus then they would all be the right length...

you will need an ignitor pack as the series 2 don't have them.

i was telling my mechanic mate about this and asking what other coils you could use. he said that the coils off a vt/vx commodore would be good, for some reason which i can't remember but will find out. but he also said that they have a built in ignitor which would make them good for series 2 r33's. i'm going to try to get a hold of a commodore coil pack and plug in the next few days to start working on a conversion and a how to.

that would be great. keep us posted. but im still dont 100% understand the how this works. im assuming the ignitionleads plug directly onto the spark plugs?

yup the ingniton leads go on top of the spark plugs. makes changing spark plugs nice and easy especialy if you dont have the coil cover on.

im going to do the conversion on my mates r33 gtst in a couple of weekends. ill take some better pics hopfully this time from start to finish.

its the same as running your normal coil packs. except that 2 plugs fire at the same time. so the plugs will be doing 2wice the sparking they would with normal coil packs. the main idea of this is to get the coils away from the heat of the engine as that what kills the rb coil packs.

i have had people with series 2 rb25s pming me and they have almost got it sorted using a r32 coil pack. im just waiting to hear back from him about how it all went.

Having a quick read for the last 20-30mins, it seems that for series 2 rb25's I would need an ignition from either a r32 or r33 s1 with the r32 being the more favourable. So this means, I would need the wiring look I would presume? The one in which fires the coilpacks...

if i get this commodore setup going it will do away with the need for the ignitor pack as the commodore coils have the ignitor built in. also the good thing is that a full set of msd coils for a commodore are around $300, which is a lot cheaper than $900 for splitfire skyline coils.

but it is looking like it may be a week or 2 before i get a chance to have a try as i'm off to the test and tune day at willowbank this weekend.

my pricing is brand new leads and coil pack through repco but at mates rates..

pfft ford.. who would want a ford part on there car.. lol its bad enough we have mitsi parts running our engines

i get trade price at repco anyway, so that doesn't worry me.

i was just wanting to try it with a commodore system because they have an ignitor built in so it would save having to chase around trying to find 1.

    • This morning I carefully reinstalled the manifold and started looking at a couple of things I need to do.  Heat wrap arrived sometime today so I popped into the shed with the missus dishwashing gloves and started wrapping the first half of the dump and the screamer/plumb back.  Once I do the second half I'll be able to final fit the turbo and exhaust up.  Also pulled the harness out today and started terminating it at the ECU end. A connector is done, just need to run the remaining wires that arent in the harness - 12v, gnd and couple I/O
    • A31 is pretty much the same thing without HiAIDS I mean CAS, no improvement lol. Not to late to send it.
    • Thanks for all the replies! I also wanted to ask if wheels that were fitted on Ford Falcons would fit the 350GTs as well? In the area I'm at there aren't that many options for secondhand wheels and new ones here are way out of my budget. From what I've seen, most of the wheels that are available that were fitted on Ford Falcons have an offset of +33 to +36, with a centre bore of 70.5mm whereas the stock 350GT's ones are 66mm, can't seem to find any hubcentric rings that fit that difference though.
    • 215/45/18 tyres are probably a little on the low side compared to the factory tyre, it should be closer to a 245/45/19, which will get you about an extra 11mm of height, and should make you speedo read a bit closer to reality. 245/45/19s will be a bit too far the other way and you risk a speeding ticket as your speedo might read slower than your actual speed.  245/40/19s would be correct if you are going to 19in rims, they will give you a similar total diameter to the 245/45/18 tyres.
    • That's something I forgot to put in my list. The aggressive anti-squat in R32 is a f**king menace. I still need to decide if I'm going to drag the subframe out of my car and weld in the GKTech corrector kit. The main reason to dither is the need to switch to spherical joints in the lower arm to account for the twist induced in the rear pivot caused by lowering the front pivot. And yes...we do put better subframes in R32s, and I wish I'd gotten an S14 one instead of an A31 when I did the "take off and nuke it from orbit" HICAS delete all those years ago.
