gday mate i have used the skyline ignitor pack only problem i can see at the moment is the connectors which go into the coil packs, if they wiggle loose then i could have a problem whilst driving, they are a male plug into the female coilpack i will fix it though

if you want to make sure that the termanals wont fall off use some solder.. i didnt use female conectors. i just solderd it and then put heat shrink over it.

there is a couple of otherways to do it that i just thought of.. when i do my mates one i might try them out.. but i got a new soldering iron that is way better then my old one so ill probly just solder it...

good to see a few people out there trying it.

Or if you wanna do it even cheaper, buy my falcon au coil (including leads) $50

Buy an rb25/rb20 ignitor for $20-50

That's 100$

If you can find one that cheap you're doing better than me, Nissan want ~$1000 new, wreckers are about $200-300, and privately their $100-$200.

However, this did get me thinking, if it's wasted spark you'd only need 3 channels of the ignitor too, and since only one of mine (cyl #3) crapped out you could probably mod it up to work. If i get the inclination i might just give it a burl.

Hay guys, sorry to bring up an OLD thred.

I went to have a looksee today, and the Coil Pack you need is

TRIDON TICO32 for a VN Commodore. retail $75.

I have a series two so i am going to have a look if i can get mine to work with the VT/VX Leads with ignitors inbuilt.

If not you will need a Series 1 ignitor pack and a new plug if you want to keep the old system functional.

Has anyone had any luck with running the VX.VT ignitor pack???

I once had a list of nissan engines that used those ignitors. They're only expensive because they're 'skyline parts'.

I picked up a couple before for $15-20, but i've since sold them.

I can't quite remember because i've got a bad memoery, but i believe the rb30 ones are the same? Don't quote me on it though. If that is the case, every vl/r31 at your local wreckers will ahve one.

I couldnt actually be bothered to read the thread, but heres my 2 cents;

-Wasted spark ignition was originally for engines without sync sensors (ie engines that didnt know which of the 4 strokes they were on)

-Those engines also had batched injection for this reason. Leading to poor fuel economy

-There are no economy benefits as far as fuel is concerned, accept your your hip pocket on replacement parts

-And as far as improving efficiency by burning the unburnt fuel on the exhaust stroke, thats a crock of shit. Even with a stratefied charge engine the spark plug is the initial ignition point (prevailing preignition doesnt occur) and at the time of 2nd spark the only gas surrounding the plug is burnt (assuming spehrical flame production). Not to mention that at the time of ignition the gases are being forced out into the exhaust manifold or intake given a significant overlap and high emap.

-Which brings me to my next point, often this ignition leads to intake manifold explosion as the flame now travels back up past the intake valves.

So in conclusion, while it may present you with savings over coils etc its not the greatest of solutions for an engine, especially one with a sync sensor. Just dumb if you ask me.

Well yeah, the cost savings would make it reasonable.

But i would hazard a guess that the nissan designed coils are substandard if they cant take the heat.

Although i consider most motorcycle engines superior to those of road car engines, the honda cbr600 coils which are directly above the spark plugs in an enclosed and exceptionally hot engine bay have never failed atleast for me. This is on a turbo application running antilag. So the engine bay is in the vacinity of 200 deg C +

But then again those engines are the closest to f1 technology as far as rpm range and specific power are concerned so its another league.

i think nissan dwell timing is set around 2.5

for the AU coils you should run 3.5 to get best results.Haltech make 3 channel ignitors for around $180 and they are unreal.

i use the falcon AU coils on my car and they are around $220 brand new and produce stronger spark then the Commodore coils and last longer

I got my holden coil packs for 40 dollars from ebay and andrew i think buying msd coils for a holden are a lot cheaper then the spitfire which still make it a pain in the arse when u go to change plugs.

I'm using Buick coils with RB20DET ignitor on a RB25DET series 2 engine.

The engine is missing a fair bit at high revs.

Have just replaced plugs and checked timing.

I'm fairly sure this has only come up since installing the wasted spark setup.

I dont fancy going back to the coils to test as I will have to buy a new coilpack loom (I chopped mine to install the wasted spark system).

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

Would moving to the VN or AU coils be worth a try?

    • Yeah i found that alot of parts can be wrong or "very" hard to get the real right one. I already bought some brakes years ago on me "old" GT calipers and they were wrong too 😄  I told them too. Even send them pictures...but they said "EBC catalogue has them on my car... So i dont know what their answer will be. I call monday them and let them know that they are really not on my car. If they were they would be already on a car...
    • Welcome to Skyline ownership. Yes, it is entirely possible parts websites get things wrong. There's a whole world of inaccuracies out there when it comes to R34 stuff (and probably 33 and 32). Lots of things that are 'just bolt on, entirely interchangable' aren't. Even between S1 and S2 R34's. Yes they have a GTT item supposedly being 296mm. This is incorrect. I would call whoever you got them from and return them and let them know the GTT actually uses 310mm rotors. Depending on where you got them from your experience and success will obviously vary.
    • Hi...a bit a "development" on the brakes. I spoke to the guys where i get brakes from...and they are saying that 296mm EBC are for R34 GT-T. I then went to their site: https://www.ebcbrakes.com/vehicle/uk-row/NISSAN/Skyline (R34)/ and search for my car(R34 GT 1998 - it has GTT brakes) and it show me this USR1229 number and they are rly 296mm rotors... So now iam rly confused... The rotors i have now on the car are 310mm asi shown... So where is the problem? Does the whole EBC got it wrong or my calipers are just...idk know what?

    • This is a recipe for disaster* Note: Disaster is relative. The thing that often gets lost in threads like this is what is considered acceptable poke and compromise between what one person considers 'good' looks and what someone else does. The quoted specs would sit absurdly outside the guards with the spacers mentioned and need  REALLY thin tyres and a LOT of camber AND rolling the guards to fit. Some people love this. Some people consider this a ruined car. One thing is for certain though, rolling the guards is pretty much mandatory for any 'good' fitment (of either variety). It is often the difference between any fitment remotely close to the guards. "Not to mention the rears were like a mm from hitting the coilovers." I have a question though - This spec is VERY close to what I was planning to buy relative to the inboard suspension - I have an offset measuring tool on the way to confirm it. When you say "like a mm" do you mean literally 1mm? Or 2mm? Cause that's enough clearance for me in the rear :p I actually found the more limiting factor ISNT the coilover but the actual suspension arms. Did you take a look at how close those were?
