calisV an a few other models are 320kw, but iv herd from a friend that work for holden that the hsv models should have close to 360kw. but kno-one knows for sure yet.

No they aren't. SS, SS V and Calais V get the 270kW/530Nm V8.

What you guys might be interested in are MOTOR's figures for the 1690kg manual SS V. 5.35 0-100 and 13.63 quarter mile on a damp track. These things aren't hanging around.

That's what they said about the various 260kW+ VY-VZ HSV's, which still weren't as quick around the track as a 206kW 350Z.

Taking an HSV to the track is a bit like taking a barge to the track. There is a reason you don't see them competing in club level sprint events & the like. Reason is they really suck when they get near a circuit. So the HSV owners clubs stick to themselves & save on embarrassment.

I took my old VT LS1 to track days - sure its a "barge" and did a 2min flat around the Creek - It was fun!

back to the topic - no, commodores arent the best car - and neither are skylines!

New HSVs are going to use 6.2L V8

There is a rumoured 'super-coupe' which will be released by Holden using the Corvette Z06's 7.3L beast engine. If so, this thing would seriously own all before it.

Well to take the example of the last SES sprint at Wanneroo, out of 90 entrants there was exactly zero HSV's. Which is not untypical. There were on the other hand, BMW M3's, GT40 replicas, old Alfa Romeo's, rotary Mazda's, a Lancia Delta Integrale, Westfield's, WRX's, Skylines, a Honda 2000s, even a Falcon ute - infact just about any and everything that a person who is interested in cars would enjoy.

That you don't like something doesn't make you close minded. It may actually make you an astute judge. :(

I dunno, you see the older cars out there at club level if I remember correctly. They are cheap cars for the power, and you can get some handling out of them if you build it primarily for track. Not as good as with a lighter car with more modern suspension design, but it'll still go alright.

But, at club level, most people stick with their clubs which means sticking with their manufacturers. Especially with the newer cars where people are less likely to want to bend them at door-to-door racing or more competitive supersprinting. I hardly ever see Ferraris and modern Porsches at supersprints or track days either, but that doesn't mean they suck at the track. They just stick to their Burrows Days and own club supersprints because that's all the owners are interested in doing.

I run with an interclub supersprint as a member of the Nissan Sports Car Club, and one of those clubs is the HSV Owner's Club of NSW. Here are the results from the last supersprint at Eastern Creek. The fastest streetable Holden was Number 998 in a Clubsport, at a not-bad 1:51. And that car's relatively new (post VT, anyway). At Wakefield he's pretty quick too.

And I don't think 998 looks much different now to when this was taken (I haven't been out for a while due to a myriad of issues with my car). A 3D class means its pretty heavily modified, but no moreso than a quite a few of the Skylines and Silvias I see running around.

Dude.........you're on a Jap import forum, and not only that its focused on a car that once dominated tin-top racing in this country over the Commodore.

Try this out on a Holden or Ford related site, and watch what happens. The flannelette will catch fire. Even if you were to go Holden vs Skylines on a Ford forum, chances are the blue bloods will defend the their fellow 'Strayans over the "Jap crap".

Read the articles in the latest wheels magazine and I must say its certainly a fantasic looking car. Extra 100kg over the old model is a worry they were already heavy enough.

Have driven the vz model with the new v6 and its pretty un-impressive a improvement over the old v6 but I expected more. Cant wait to test drive the car and to expect the build quality. I must say the build quality in the vz is much better than that of the BA easpecially the interior but still nothing compared to a japanese or europeon car.

Saw the V8 in the flesh in Prahran on Saturday - quad pipes and V8 but also an enormous Arse end overhang compared to a very short snout - did not like it one bit.

Holden have bet on the wronf horse with the new Commodore - it's a car for a different time when petrol was 80c a litre.

So, someone who works with Camry's is claiming a Commode has a fat arse?

Toyota have been predicitng the extinction of the Commodore/Foulcon for a very long time now. They did it with the Camry's in about 1990 (The one with the chook in the ads), then again with the last series, again with the Avalon (Remember them?) & now again with the Aurion or whatever they are to call it. Keep in mind Ford doesn't import the Mondeo because they don't sell, nor do the mid sized Holdens much.

I don't mind Toyotas. I just wish they could build something interesting to go with all that build quality & bulletproof reliability. Having said that, the new hybrid Lexus is a fine thing.

I quite the look of the new VE Commodore from side-on, but it does look like a BA / BF Falcon. Which is ironic, because I said the then-new BA Falcon looked a lot nicer when it was released since they dropped the ugliness that was the AU Falcon and made something that looked more like a Commodore.

On a big family sedan I don't mind having a larger rear overhang to give a bigger boot, and a shorter front overhang works for me for technical reasons.

Check out the Peugeot 407 if you want to see what happens if they build it the other way. It looks worse.

Funny that, I looked at the new Commode & thought it looks much more like a Camry than it ever did. Particularly from side on.

The cabin section is all-Camry too, in my eyes. When I saw pics of the SS-V on Holden's web site, I almost mistook it for a Camry Sportivo. The C pillar and shutline on the trailing edge of the rear doors especially.

But the squared headlight and tail light arrays, and the slope of the front bonnet, from the side-on shot look like a BA Falcon's (which is more what I was focusing on since The Baron was talking about the front and rear overhangs).

If I took the detail out to leave just solid black and looked at it in silhouette, I would have issues separating the two.

    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻

I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
