:) Hi peoples... Just want to see what fuel people use and which one not to use?

I found mine, i have tried Bp ultimate98ron,Shell optimax98,mobil 98ron,vortex98, i have not liked any of them except vortex98. Till you would not believe it the new UNITED(owned by mobil) The fuel my car loves is the 15 percent ethanol called BOOST 98ron.From CSR sugar cane :dry:

No more pinging with the timing advanced,boost etc!

450kms from $60 worth of fuel at $1.34 per litre every week! :P

thast cause ethanol fuels have similar properties to race fuel. somthing close to 112octane. There is a review on just that fuel on a mild mod r32 gtr after tune it gained about 20kw at all four wheels by advancing the ingition timing. too bad we cant get it in WA yet.

It should get there soon.. People say this fuel is crap and it damages your engine???? Why do chemical engineers spend hours in research? I cant see why you would waste money on all them rip off $1.60 a litre fuels. :/ The only engine it may damage is a boat anchor holden engine or something :laugh:

Another thing of proof! :laugh: My other car a RSfour stagea which is my wifes family car: it runs around usually on BP ultimate98, we were lucky to get 320kms to a tank! On boost 98 we get 380 to 400kms out of tank :/ Due to extra weight etc they naturally use more than a skyline!

its all the same crap. all the of fuel is shared between the fuel companies and even stored in the same tanks. i see no logical reason you would get extra km;s from one batch of fuel or brand to another (assuming same octane rating). ive haerd many fairy stories but i cant see any reason why you'd magically get 30kms more on a bp vs shell given BP use shell's crap anyway.

ive tried various brands and no noticable change between detonation, fuel economy, power, and zest.

this of course is not to be confused with a bad batch of 98 premium which might ping its ass off and make the car run crappy

Dude, he is talking about 2 different types of fuel, the 15% ethanol 98 ron vs. everyone elses standard 98 ron.

not sure about where you are buying this fuel as in Melb United Boost 98 has 10% ethenol (thought 10% was max allowed)

i have tried every premium on the market that is readly available.

this is what i have found;

1. Optimax Extreme (smooth, bit more pickup than Mobil and eco bout the same as BP 98)

2. Mobil 98 (Most eco i get out of any fuel and car runs better that any other 98)

3. BP Ultimate ( little less eco than Mobile and just feels a little less smooth)

4. United Boost 98 E10 ( car runs really smoth but just dosn't feel as punchy as OE and Mobil)

5. Vortex ( don't know if this is 98 think they say at least 95-98 car ran bout the same as normeal optimax possible a little better)

6. Opitmax (easly worst premium i fount car runs not as smooth and eco is not as good)

for what its worth my mate has a Supra TT found the experiences with the fuels.

oh yeah my car is a 96 33 GTS-t cat back, pod, BOV, HKS coilovers on 9psi

the only problem is that apparantly ethanol can bond to H20 - thats why there was a stink about it when it was first being used coz obviously water and pistons dont mix.

however i think its unlikely to actually get enough water into your engine to do instant damage but i think the whole point is that it "can" do damage over time... who knows if it actually does... i mean most of us use high flow air filters that prolly let in just as much crap and water vapour anyway.

% ethanol doesn't do shit for economy...

all is does is herlp change the octane rating..

so if 2 comparible fuels are both 98 ron then whichever has ethanol added needed to be modified to make this ron rating, makign it the shitter fuel

eg

0% ethanol (eg ultimate) = 98ron petrol with no additives

15% ethanol (eg boost) = 95ron petrol with ethanol added

get my drift??

the only reason i use ethanol-added fuel is that the highest ron fuel on the market is optimax extreme, and this happens to have it added. otherwise if it were 98ron i would be using BP ultimate

February 2006

We have a new project car, an R33GTST that is in need of some TLC. One of the recent upgrades was a Power FC. As most people are aware, the default ignition maps are a little advanced for Optimax, Ultimate or Vortex 98. Not as bad as they used to be for 95 ron fuels, but still a tad. Obviously I will tune it properly eventually , but we have a few mods to go yet and I don’t have the time to tune it multiple times. So the idea was to stick the Power FC in and run it on the default maps for a couple of weeks. On Optimax and Ultimate (didn’t try Vortex) it was reaching knock of 60+ up our usual test hill in 4th gear as logged on the datalogit. The dash warning was also flashing frequently, as it is set for 60, in normal day to day driving around. When the tank was just about empty this week, we filled it up with Optimax Extreme (@ 5 cents a litre more than Optimax). Several runs up the hill and we are not seeing knock over 10. And zero dash warnings in 3 days of normal driving.

Now that is very worthwhile, there is not enough Optimix Extreme around yet for me to tune it exclusively for 100 ron, but it sure will be a useful for the odd track day or run down the ¼.

I will monitor the effects of the ethanol on the fuel lines, o’rings and seals over the next few weeks. The injectors and fuel pump will have to come out shortly so I will check their condition as well. I am not anticipating any problems, but it is still worth checking.

After a month (~2,000k's) of running exclusively on Extreme in the R33GTST, I did a fuel filter change on the weekend. Cut it open and no sign of any foreign material, deteriorated fuel hose etc. That means zero effect from the 5% ethanol, as expected. So we will continue to use it.

Current status, after 8 months of running exclusively Shell Optimax Extreme 100 ron.

After 3 fuel filter changes I still haven’t found one sign of fuel system rubber or metal deterioration.

I cleaned the injectors last week and there is not one sign of any effect on them either. I also flow tested them and they performed exactly as they did last time I flow tested them.

Based on the results with the R33GTST, I have now started to use it in the Stagea, which I will be tuning again very shortly to take advantage of the extra performance on offer.

I'm using Standard 98 Octane Shell Optimax, purely for the 4 cent's per litre off equation :) I'd be more than willing to switch if someone could

actually 'prove' that something else in the standard 98 octane family is better. We don't have Optimax Extreme here that I'm aware of =\

Id have to say that my car is much happier running on shell extreme 100ron. Previously was using Mobil synergy 8000 that wasnt bad either. In all honesty though I would have thought that the fuel used when the car is getting tuned would be the fuel of choice purely for the fact that the car has been tuned to that state of fuel...

Sk. have you managed to open up the block on your R33 GTST? Would be very interested in seeing if there is any discoluration/corrosion etc in the block after running extreme exclusively.

Actually, the cylinder heads is off at the moment, it is getting some new exhaust valves after a 10,300 rpm over rev (wasn't me). Looks beautiful, no signs of detonation, inlet ports are clean and unmarked, pistons and exhaust ports have the right amount of discolouration for a 110,000 k's old engine. The valve seats (inlet and exhaust) were in perfect condition. The Bores are perfect, no lip, still can see some hone marks. The rings look to be doing their job just fine and the standard head gasket was sealing perfectly.

Overall, it's in perfect condition, especially considering we have been running it at 15 to 1 A/F ratios off boost and 12 to 1 on boost. Plus it’s done a few laps on circuits, a handful of 1/4 runs and is tuned with lots of ignition advance. Twelve new Ferrea exhaust valves, o’rings, a quick port and polish of the combustion chambers and it will be ready for some more work.

From my high school days i remember the original argument about ethanol fuels. Ethanol is very corosive but it is not in the engine long enough or in high enough concentration to cause any damage. As for economy and rivability, ethan ol is less dence than petrol so in theory the economy should not change but its ability to supressdetonation is awsome. I cant wait to get it in wa. Some of the local workshops get it imported and they say it beats alot of the 110+ octane race fuels on turbo engines. From all i can see, there is no reason not to use it. To me its spells an extra 10% of power and torque and a healthier engine. all for the cost of one retune and cheeper fuel. love it

    • The question then becomes - was there any fluid coming from that hole before you did the rebuild ?    You may not have noticed, of course.   Depending on how you did the rebuild, the possibility has to be considered that somehow (cleaning ?)  fluid entered that hole and is now being 'forced'  out by small movements of the proportioning valve.   From the factory, there's actually a small rubber plug in that hole but with age and under-bonnet heat it's quite common for it to 'go missing'.  That rubber plug is designed to allow the venting process but also to prevent 'stuff' getting to the area (prevent corrosion, etc).   The plug is also not available as a spare part AFAIA. Personally I wouldn't race and buy a new master just yet but keep an eye on the area to see if the 'leak' continues.   If you're concerned about brake fluid damaging nearby paintwork, cable tie a piece of suitable absorbant material over the hole and remove/monitor occasionally.    Operation of the proportioning valve and the brake master itself won't be affected, but also keep an eye on brake fluid level, of course. In terms of a new master, the genuine part is getting expensive, unfortunately.  Amayama is showing AUD900+.   I was searching recently and there's an aftermarket part available from Japan made by 'Parts Assist': https://zenmarket.jp/en/yahoo.aspx?q=BNR32%2bBM50&p=1 Whether it's any good I have no idea, although in my experience Japanese aftermarket stuff is pretty good quality-wise.   The above site allows overseas buyers to purchase stuff more easily from Japan but there are fees and shipping costs, of course.   The original Japanese seller page is here: https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/p1197401228 Copper/Nickel is fine but I still prefer bundy tube and it's also cheaper.
