I think I got flashed last night in St Kilda rd by a fixed red light camera... really sucks as I am SURE I was running the light as it was amber!! Ive never had a fine for running a traffic light in all of my 8 year driving history and this thing was sus! Heck the last time I got done for speeding was back on my P plates over 6 years ago!!

ANyway do you lose 3 demerit points for running the red light? Also how much is the fine?

Im gonna appeal/fight this fine no matter what!

You'll loose.

Amber = prepare to stop. Not accelerate and try get passed it, lookup what the amber is defined as and what your meant to do...

You havent got a leg to stand on :)

Pay the fine (around $250 i think) and get on with it.

I was already passing through the traffic light as it was turning amber! Even if I slammed the brakes I would of ended up in the middle of the interscation!

ive heard of people beating red traffic light fines, most dont do anything about it and just pay the fine. 250 bucks? whatta jib!

Agree with Ash here. Traffic lights have all loop holes I know covered except for trucks on their length.

E.g

Dont enter intersection if unclear on the other side

You should be able to stop if it turns amber by adjusting your speed on the approach

Amber doesnt mean boot it (even though we have all done it)

Not having a go at you but unlike speeding where things can be contested, I dont know of any with traffic lights. Are you sure it wasnt a car near you that triggered it?

We get loads for work for trucks that go through on green but get pinged on the red due to the length. Our driver employer at work gets most of the trucks out of the fines and points as they are green on entry to the intersection.

Ill appeal as I did not enter the intersaction when the lights were red. Cheers for the tips.

If you get a fine in the mail, first thing to do is to go to the camera enforcment office (or whatever it's called these days) and see the photograph(s). That will tell the story.

There should be two flashes, the first being when you cross the first line AFTER the light turns red and the second being for crossing the second line. I have a family friend who is a taxi driver and whenever he runs the first line on red he just turns right and avoids the second flash.

If you tried to beat the light, you may have been done for speeding and not running the red :(.

Ask for a photo (you'll have to pay for it) make sure they don't tamper with the pic by giving you a zoomed in pic of your number plate only. The photo will show what colour the lights were.

Yeah you wont get a fine if you entered on the amber. They also give slight tolerance (delay) once it changes to red as well.

They take two photos, one of you crossing the line with the red light, and another showing that you proceeded through the intersection. If the second one shows that you stopped and reversed back, you dont get a fine.

So in conclusion, you shouldn't get a red light fine.

You might have a speeding fine coming if you were speeding at the time though...

If it was the camera near the end of St Kilda Rd I would fight it.

I have driven past that spot a number of times and that camera goes off with nothing around.

Seriously, I was driving up to it and it flashed twice and I was like WTF? There was NOTHING to take a photo of.

Good luck

Hah... why am I not surprised? :)

It was the camera which points into the inner (from what I gathered) lane of St Kilda Rd. This is very close to the entrance into Fitzroy St so yeah right towards the end of St Kilda rd.

Seriously I never ran a red light arghh! I dont do stupid shit like that. I didnt even plant my foot as I saw I was entering the amber light and had enough pace to get out while the traffic lights were amber.

I am fighting this thing as soon as it comes in. If I did run a red light Id own up.

Cheers mate!

to clarify. when i designed the logic in the early setups if it was amber you would be ok. The idea is that they are fixed red-light speed so if you speed up and went over the limit to make the lightst you will be flashed also and possible get both a red light and speeding fine.

however doesn't mean its always perfect - after all I'm not working or helping these companies anymore

with all new fines that come in the mail by law now it must have a photo of the license plate clear , and also a zoomed out version showing the full car ..but like all things they can tamper with the pics, just hope it doesnt turn up

the fixed camera on the last intersection on st kilda rd outbound just before entering princess hwy is a redlight and speed camera. if you didn't run the red, you probably got snapped for speeding over 60km/h :(

Hmm cant recall I was speeding. Anyway as others have said, lets wait and see. I may be back... :P

I was travelling down St Kilda rd on Saturday & saw the driver in front of me get flashed at the same intersection, the lights had just turned amber as she entered the intersection. I thought maybe a faulty camera until I read GTTR34's post.

Just hang in there for the time being.

One newly installed at Bay Road next to Southland on Nepean Hwy, flashed a couple of times at the car in front of me this morning while the lights were on green. I even went through on green. It looks like one of the new speed camera ones. Am wondering if maybe they are set up as a straight fixed speed camera as well although my understanding was it only picked speed up if you booted it through on the amber/red.

    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
