Can someone please explain the symptoms of a blown turbo to me?

Ive got a loud rattle that sounds like its coming from one of my HKS turbos, it makes the sound at idle, and it doesnt rise with the revs. My GTR is also down on boost, 0.6bar instead of 1.2bar.

Could a blown CAT cause the rattle and increase backpressure to rob psi?

Thanks, just a bit nervous...

Well CRD have just called me and they think one of my HKS 2540 turbos is blown....

I dont really know what to do or where to look.

CRD beleive that a repair kit for the turbo's no longer exists, although they said they'll call around for me.

I want to try and get out of this as cheaply as possible.

Powerwise, im not really bothered. But 280KW to 350KW AWKW would be the ballpark.

UAS sell Garrett N1's for $3100. The GT-SS's are up around the $4500 mark, thats more than i can afford.

Does anyone please have any advise or places i should call?

Im really stressed out at the moment and quite upset.

Any advise would be great...

Thanks

gcg might be able to rebuild them for you, depends on whats "failed"

could be bearings, the wheels, the shaft and so on...

find out whats busted and speak to gcg in sydney, they should be able to give you a price.

if its unfixable then gt-ss's are probably suitable, you can sell one of your work 2540's for some cash so its not as bad. i dont think gt-ss's are $4500 though, i think the UAS pricing is a little "high"

GCG should be able to rebuild your 2540. it may be worth considering rebuilding both at the same time. also make sure you get them to try and find out why it failed in the first place. faulty oil drain? oil feed? something else?? make sure it doesn't happen again.

ive got the same thing now on my r33 gtst... but with mine the ticking noise increases as the revs increase. I only revved it to like 1500 to test it out though..

Also there was also a small piece of this black plasticy stuff in the throttlebody, wedged between the butterfly thingy.

Im getting it checked out on monday hopefully, but does that sound like it might be the turbo aswell  ??? or the bearing or something :) ??

also the noise doesnt seem to change in volume. I'll take off the afm pipe and see if the turbo looks screwed up.

Its quite possible the exh. wheel let go as a result killing the turbo's bearings (unbalanced) causing the comp. wheel to slam in to the comp. housing and breaking. Then it goes through your motor.

Similiar happens when the comp wheel is metal apart from instead of having the plastic go through your motor you have shavings of metal. :)

well like i was saying there was a bit of the plastic stuck in the throttle body between the butterfly, causing it stay open when i was idling. It was realy small though. There was one other small piece in that metal pipe that connects to the throttle body. But besides those 2 litle pieces i couldnt see any else. Would most of it be stuck in the intercooler or something ??

I probs should of mentioned :) i was at the sauvic drag day 2day and it happened when i changed from 2nd to 3rd gear at like 6500rpm, then the boost was all gone :~(

but ya what happens if the plastic crap gets into the motor like it might have ???

if its not bad for it, i'll just slap a new turbo on... but it doesnt sound like its gonna be good for it

GT-SS are not $4500 landed mate

Um i woudnt be driving your car anywhere, plastic in the butterfly and goin into the enigne is very very bad......i would either start ripping the engine apart now or......slap a new turbo on there and drive it till it dies :O ......

simplest way - take out the spark plugs. look inside. if you can see anything in there, your engine is most likely gone.

plastic or metal, doesnt' matter. That plastic isn't like condom rubber or something. it's very hard heavy duty plastic. think about how strong it is to withstand the high RPM.

Basiaclly, it woulda smashed into a powder, probably scored the bores too.

Dump the engine oil and run it thorugh coffee paper.

you shouldn't have drive your car at all. I woulda turned it straight off.

Engine is probably dead now.

    • For these last 7 years of ownership, I've always had to use a small scissor jack under one of the front tow hooks to raise the front just enough so my low-profile jack fits under to reach my subframe jack point. I'm beginning to get annoyed of always having to do this. Are there any lower low-profile jacks that fit under the gtr lip on a dropped car?
    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
