i understand its a sportscar forum - i wasnt the one that made the initial post - but i thought having driven the car, seen the car and know most of the pricing and specs id answer any questions anyone on the forums may have about the vehicle.

There are a few Large RWD Japanese cars by Nissan (Fuga) and Toyota (Mark X) etc that would scare Holden/Ford into solely making Taxi's. The only trouble is they aren't specced as lowly as the Commondore and Falcon, and by the time they got here, the base bare-bones models (if they existed) would be mid $30K range... not price competitive.

Mid $30k is what the Omega (base model) Commodore cost.

The Aussie built Japs need a 'hero' car. And up specced FWD large cars with 'tough' body kit and apparently clever (see through) marketing is not going to get them there.

Will this convince the fleet buyers? Will have to wait and see.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ahem........

I am a fleet buyer.

went to the Canberra launch this arvo and i can say that overall its pretty much on par with the falcadores.

nothing really special about the sports models though besides looks.

i will only be purchasing one of these to replace the crappy avalon we currently have.

Let me say up front - I too work for 'Big T'

I agree - the Aurion is not my choice of car, but it is very good at what it is meant to do

To put it into perspective - of the 4 LM's (local maunfacturers)

Ford - just announced 20% production cut

Mitsubishi - approx 50 380's per day

Holden < 5000 new VE's sold in first month (compared to 7000+ when they launched VZ)

Toyota - ramping up production from 100,000 per annum to 140,000 per annum (Camry and Aurion)

So I guess they are doing something right ;-)

PS Just wait until some of the performance hybrid technology trickles down like it does for Hybrid Camry in the US.

Electric motors give good Torque ;-)

Just when I thought that the big Australian built family front drivers were putting too much torque through the front wheels, the Americans bring us EVEN MORE!!!

im not a big fan of it at all, to me the past camrys even dating back to early 90's have something unco about them and the way they drive i cant quite figure it out.

when is the new ford comming out?

I can tell you one thing, right now, it won't do as good as a Falcon/Commodore. And that's TOW.

FWDs are useless at towing. ESPECIALLY if you get a bit of a trailer sway up. You need low down torque, in your higher gear. You don't want to be stuffing around jamming it back three gears, as by this time, you've lost 10-20km/h in speed, and just jack-knifed/spun your car/trailer combo.

Basically, it's a FWD, that's not what the "Aussies" want.

The main aussie market, want a big 6, or an 8, that's RWD, with MASSES of boot space, and not a problem slamming 5 adults in the car.

I've never found a Camry/Magna that I can fit 5 adults in, without being REALLY uncomfortable. They just don't have the masses of back seat room that a Commodore has.

Slalom driving. A RWD will MUNCH a FWD in slalom, day in, day out. You drive a slalom, with the throttle. Slalom is MEANT to be done right on the edge of going sideways.

As for your comparisons. I'll put $20 down, that the guy driving the Ford, was told to make it look all out of shape, he would have had all of his electronics turnt off, and when he gets in the Toyota, told to make it look like a dream.

It's called marketting, Toyota has sold you over. If you jump in that Ford, and hit the Slalom, and then jump in your Toyota, you'll find the Ford actually does it much better.

And Toyota, can't be building engines all that well, if they're making 200KW from a supercharged engine. Holden and Ford are both just about doing this, with Normally Aspirated engines.

Also Holden has 5 and 6 speed autos, and also the 6 speed manual. Is it just me, but no one has mentioned Toyota offering a manual...

Boring maybe? Everything about conservative Australian Toyotas is exactly how you'd expect them to be, everything in the interior is exactly where it is to be expected to be, it drives how it should, no quirks... no character, no style? But that sort of predictability suits a large percentage of the population. And sales show that. The quality of Toyotas is certainly undebatable, their purpose spot on. But some people would like more to a car, something emotional, with a soul. You know what I'm saying?

yeah camrys have always been a little on the average side.

lol mbs i went on a 3 hour rd trip in a friend camry and couldnt wait to get out, it might have something to do with the fact that the people in the back combined weight came to around 280kg's.

check out the trd version

supercharged... mmm

http://www.toymods.net/forums/showthread.php?t=14199

A step in the right direction that's for sure. :D They need something for people get somewhat excited about, if only midly (in this case)...

Just a correction - the 200kW is from a normally aspirated engine - the supercharged versiopn is aiming at about 240 kW

And yes there is no manual but the 6 speed is standard and is 'tiptronic'

i never did say i liked it - these arent cars that personally interest me .... but you have said that noone is going to buy it - which is not true ..... just cos it doesnt appeal to you doesnt mean it wont appeal to others - that is my point.

i'll take my 350z anyday over an toyota .... i chose a skyline over a supra and so on but that doesnt mean they dont make a good car - toyota make a brillant car - the amount of people i have in here that have been reffered by their mechanics saying that you cant buy any better than a toyota is amazing. Toyota do what they do very well: quality, durability and reliability ..... they aren't a sports car manufacturer but as i said before just because its not a RWD and its not this and its not that ..... its not MEANT to be those things its a family sedan thats to take on the six market and will do very well - as the new holden we had to drive wouldve been only a month old and already disintergrating in some areas so that alone was proof.

I work for toyota aswell lol. And i totally agree, i love my 32 and would never stray from the skyline, but youd have to be a little silly to say that toyota cant make a good car, they've done it before, and they can do it again, their motors are strong and built to last... ie hilux - unbreakable hahaha. I heard at work that there was a drive day, and the Aurion was pitted against the falcon and commodore, and it outdid them. For a grandma car i think thats pretty good.

Ahh, sorry about that then

So, with a jump in 40KW, on a 200KW engine, they must be running what 3PSI of boost? What did they bolt to it? The SC14 Supercharger?

As for "Tiptronic" how about we say "Slow reacting *manual* driven auto"?

Tiptronic = piece of pooh!

well took one of the first to arrive in our yard for a burn today ..... the ABS works very well as i found out from some A-hole that didnt look and just pulled out in front of me!

As for towing - it has traction control and torque .... towing grandmas little caravan shouldnt be much of a problem - anything bigger then most people would go to hilux/prado anyway.

Its a great car to drive for a family sedan has a decent whack of power the gearbox seems nice and smooth. The inside and outside i find a little yawn .... but im sure i'll sell plenty no doubt - already have people from other clubs that know what i do PM'ing me really interested in buying one.

Ok i have driven my parents 05 sportivo camry and i must say the suspension SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!! body roll anyone?? WORST SUSPENSION EVER!!!!!!!!!!

---- I seriously dont feel safe at all, esp driving down to uni in it (110 zone to gong uni) -- But atleast fuel is much cheaper than my line!!

I have also driven my dads old VY commodore. Much better handling than the camry thats for sure..

SO to those ppl who work at toyota and have driven the new camry, hows the suspension in it?? Better than the last model i hope??

But oh god, what there toyota thinking in the suspension department!!

Even the old 96 model camry we had handled better!! no joke.

What about a small boat and those boat ramps? The fwd's struggle with the boat off the trailer to get traction.

    • Please use a modern ECU. PowerFC with the Nintendo Gameboy controller is horrible. It's not 2005 anymore.
    • The car/ECU will have all the sensor that it needs and expect to have. I think i do not have to explain to you how the Link is way better specialy if you have swapped engine   I just do not want to deal with any "problems" cuz i have only Nistune which i learned is not that great and in my case cant even deal with that speed problem (Link can) And of course it will be way more easier to tune and diagnose and safe. And for the ECU/speed problem...i dont know.
    • Per Mark Roberts of Sonictune: Mark Robert Author At this time, no. No ETA either 2016-17 models. You will be able to purchase and install a 2018.5+ TCU though   TCU purchasing and pricing info! As we near the release of TCU tuning, I am going to answer some questions I get asked often.   What do I need for TCU tuning? At this time, you will need a 2018.5+ TCU to be able to tune. If you have a 2016-to early 2018, you will need to replace your TCU with the newer version. One good way to know if your TCU is good is if you have auto upshift in manual mode in 1st gear around 6500 rpms. If your manual 1st gear goes to 7k rpm and will hit the rev limiter unless you shift, you have the older TCU.   Why do I need to buy another ecu license/phone flash if I already have it on my ECU tune? The TCU is its own computer module. It is completely separate from the ECU. Because of this, you will be required to purchase a TCU license and, if your tuner has it, the phone flash license required to tune it via phone/bluetooth.   Do I need TCU tuning? TCU tuning is NOT required. However, the faster your setup, the more it will assist in track and dragy time consistency.   If I’m ECU tuned by (tuner A) can I get my TCU tuned by (Tuner ? Yes, since it’s a different module and a completely separate flash, you can have two different tuners. However, it is highly recommend that you have both tuned by the same tuner. For me, my TCU tuning will directly complement my ECU tuning style and features and running my ECU and another TCU or vice versa MIGHT cause some issues. At this time and for the foreseeable future, I will only be tuning my current ECU tuned customers TCUs.     I have a SYVECS AWD controller. Do I still need it? Yes! The AWD controllers main job is to control your AWD system. However, with TCU tuning, you will no longer need the auto-shift function as that will be done through the TCU. The AWD controller will still be very beneficial for racers looking to maximize traction on the launch.     Shift schedule changes: holding gears longer at lower pedal input as well as max shift rpm changes. Please note, the new ECU race rom coming out will address 90% of the shitty drivability issues these cars have through custom maps from myself and Racebox—as well as others I am sure.   Increase shift speeds: as seen in the videos I’ve been posting, the TCU shifts much faster once tuned.   Increased shift pressures: as also seen in the videos, much firmer full throttle shifts.

    • The fancy pants red shock tower brace is finally incoming from MX5 Mania, getting it shipped from 'Merica has been a long and problematic process, and GWR, the 'Merican supplier will not ship directly to consumers outside of the US, Mania basically had to order a heap of them, the colour choice was silver, or red, and we all know anything red adds 5 killerwasps of dynotorques..... Whilst it does fit over a 2.5, and I've seen a few photos and videos of it being installed and fitting, google also says it might get real close to the FAB9 intake front runner, people in the US says it does fit with the FAB9 intake, except for one person who said it slightly touched.......so there is that.....LOL..... As it seems that I am the first in AU to have this combination of parts there's no local knowledge about fitment, so I'm just a willing guinea pig in this endeavour, I'll cross my fingers and toes and hope for the best In other news, I ordered stuff from China  on the same day I ordered the 23° silicone bend from Victoria, the stuff from China arrived a day ago, the 23° silicone bend is still travelling around Australia thanks to Australia Post, and "may" be here next week
