yep RB25.

Guy with SR20 wants to get the 1.12 turbine housing and this is on a circuit car he is building!!!

Hmm...a 1.12 housing is going to be crazy lag :D I would rather go for the larger T51 HKS turbo instead of the GT3037S with 1.12A/R. I think it looks nicer ;) He using a stroker kit? 2.2L? Well, there is the white JUN s15 in Perth that's supposed to be a circuit car. And that runs a T88. Too big if you ask me :D

RS500 thanks for the link to the comparison chart. I see what you are saying about the turbine housing. Only confused now that once the wastegate opens, wouldnt back pressure be about the same at 1 bar of boost wether o.87 or 0.61???

I think HKS recommend the 0.87 turbine housing for RB25, but I will wait and see what this turbo goes like when I start winding boost in before I trade in the housing for a larger one. If I can keep a similar torque curve, its staying. Very nice to have good power available from low down, and it is definately more responsive and pulls alot harder off boost than with the stock turbo.

Paul, if the car is on the road, not getting work done, there is every chance in the world.

question here guys. When I brought my car they told me it had a hks 2530 on it. When I pulled some of the plumbing off recently and got a better look at the turbo the only clues I got to it being aftermarket was the smooth feel of the ball bearing blades, and a small badge near the (oil?) feed line which said gt2530. Now is this turbo a garret? by the sounds of it it wont make alot of difference, garret seem to know their stuff...

HKS use garrett cores, the HKS 2530 is infact a HKS GT2530, and it should have a plate saying GT2530 on the core.

But, it should also have HKS on the compressor cover and turbine cover, as they have them specially made to their specs, as are the compressor wheels. This is what you pay the extra for.

The core though is identical.

It will be interesting to see how the GT30 you are fitting goes in comparsion - hurry up:D

.

If your curious to know, my previous turbo was a gt30 (the previous owner told me it was a gt35/40). It had a .82 rear housing (it was a 500hp turbo). on 26psi it made 320+rwkw. It had full boost @ 4000rpm (320rwkw). It started spooling up @ approx 3000rpm. It held 300rwkw to 6500k then dropped off to 290rwkw @ 7300rpm.

My t88 makes full boost abit later but makes the same power using much lesser boost + timing and holds it all the way to 7400rpm.

Thats funny coz i remember gtst-vspec thread and he was making 300rwkw with on 18psi with a 500hp GT30.

What size was the comp on your gt30?

Steve, i have a hks 2540 and it only has hks on the exaust housing. not on the actuator, nor the compressor housing. can you prove that it is not a hks turbo because i really doubt it as is was sold to me by a very reliable contact. please be sure of your statements as the amount of bullshit on this board must be approaching the 50% level...

There really was no need for that last comment, all you manged to do is make yourself look like a dickhead.

Anyway.... So you want proof? You really want proof that you got ripped off and your "very reliable contact" sold you an incomplete HKS turbo or worse, a Garrett turbo with HKS exhaust housing?

How about this... I scanned in a page of my HKS Goodsmaster.

Firstly, the page:

2540_a.jpg

And a zoom of the turbo pictured:

2540_b.jpg

Notice the big and unmistakable "HKS" cast onto the compressor housing?

Notice the caption that labels it a GT2540?

HKS GT2540s don't come with HKS wastegate actuators. You have to buy them seperately, so I scanned in that page too:

actuator_a.jpg

actuator_b.jpg

It is possible to use your standard actuators with the HKS turbo, but not very commonly done.

So.... Is that proof enough for you?

Now what's this about the bullshit level of posts on here??? Perhaps what YOU think is bullshit, is actually correct, and the bullshit lies solely with you.

26GTS, ask yourself, how do you know you have a HKS turbo if it doesnt have HKS on it?

All the HKS turbos I have seen (admittedly not hundreds, but I have seen many) have, as Merli demonstrated (cant get much clearer than that;) cheers), HKS on the housings.

Perhaps if you really do think 50% of the info on here is bullshit, you shouldnt bother logging on, as you would be doing yourself a disservice.

Admittedly there is some dis-information, but I have certainly learnt alot from here, as I would think most people who have been loggin on for a while have.

Perhaps you could word your posts a little better, rather than just jumping in and making broad sweeping and unfair generalisations - makes for much friendlier forums:)

Uh guys, you might have noticed he has an RB20 or 25 powered car. Odds are on the fact he is using a single turbo setup, which probably has a T3 flange. All of the HKS 25xx series with the T3 flange DO NOT have the custom HKS compressor cover, but use a Garrett cover with the center machined out and an aluminium insert held in by 4 hex screws.

The only HKS markings on the T3 range are on the exhaust cover, and on the metal tag on the center catridge.

Standard actuators work fine with those turbos too, so no dire need to run a HKS actuator.

Just my 2 cents, no need to jump on the bandwagon and drill someone over this...

Hi guys I've got a RB25det (auto) and I want to make around the 200rwkw mark I was first looking at a HKS2530 to do this but like the idea of cheaper price (new) turbo and running less boost to hit that target power.

So what would be a good Garrett turbo to hit my goal?

I already have:

Wolf ECU (not in-stalled)

910 Fuel pump (not in-stalled)

Filter

Comeing soon:

Turbo back exhaust (Depending on Turbo)

FMIC (Depending on Turbo)

Auto Tranny cooler

Fuel Reg

Injectors

I'm not after a dyno queen I just want useable power and it must spool up quick, I'm after torque.

Useing standard internals I'm looking at running two different settings with the Wolf Low boost around the 170-180rwkw and high boost 200-210rwkw.

I was looking at this one do you think this will be ok or do you think it might be to big for what I'm after?

Garrett GT25R Ball Bearing Turbo:-

Rated 380hp

Spec's:-

0.64a/r Turbine Housing (5 bolt outlet)

0.70a/r Compressor Housing

Watercooler Centre

48 Trim Compressor Wheel (T04S)

48 lbs/min Comp Flow Max.

76 Trim Turbine Wheel

Integral Wastegate

    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
    • Oh and some up-and-comings; New rear drivers wheel bearing. I'll do that this weekend while the diff is out. The car is already up and the d/c axles and missing exhaust will help with space. This is the last bearing for me to do and I've been dragging my feet on it. I also have some new EBC blue stuff pads for the car and some new brake fluid. I haven't ever flushed the fluid in this car and looking forward to it. I have 600 degree fluid to put in. Not exactly "race fluid" but better than the typical stuff I have been using.
    • A proper clutch/plate type mechanical diff with quite a lot of pre-load and high locking % is better for drifting. Much more consistent in its behaviour. A helical can be annoyingly vague and inconsistent in how it responds under the sorts of abuse found in drifting.
    • Some updates here. I pulled the entire interior out, minus some trim to respray the seats with Colourlock dye. It turned out really nice though I accidentally let the dog in the car after and she scratched up the front seat.  This is what it looked like before, the colour was just washing out everywhere but thankfully the leather was in good nic. Then after the respray   And after the bloody dog jumped in The headliner is out waiting to be retrimmed, but it will stay out now until Nov - see why below. I replaced the stereo/headunit with a period-styled Android headunit. I have no after pics, but I'll get some. This is because of the missing pixels. I tried to fix this twice with replacement ribbon cables but couldn't. Also the bluetooth interface I'd bought for this was crap. Then there's the rusty roof. Pics and info in this other thread. I have decided to get this repaired professionally, but I'll update that thread. This is why the headliner will stay out for now. I'll be getting the roof and bonnet resprayed at the same time the rust is fixed. I also had an interesting issue with my drivers door lock.  For a small period I was having issues getting any 12v power to the car - I mean *any*. It would have no dash lights, nothing. It happened while I was at the shops and I couldn't get in the car. So, we had 2 problems. The most pressing here is that I was locked out. I have only a single physical key hole on the car, the drivers door and no amount of turning would unlock the car. Surely it doesn't need power for this? The second issue is why am I losing all power periodically, The battery isn't dead, its almost like the battery isn't even there. Two issues that were surprisingly easy to fix. You fellow BMW over-engineering lovers will appreciate this. The lock in the door has 5 states; mechanical lock, electric lock, neutral, electric unlock, mechanical unlock achieved at -90 degrees, -45 degrees, 0 degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees. Although, the unlock is towards the front of the car, so opposite for LHD countries. Sticking the key in and turning 45 left or right is what is used 99% of the time. It activates the central locking etc. 90 degrees is for dead battery access and, obvs, only un/locks the one door. But because the mechanical lock is never used and is 27 years old, it seizes up. I was totally unable to turn the key far enough to get to the mechanical unlock (At the time of locking myself out, I didn't even know this was a thing). I eventually did it with some vicegrips and teflon spray.  I made a quick vid for other E39 peeps.   The battery issue is totally new to me also - It wasn't making sufficient contact between the post and the terminal. The terminal was bolted on tight, but the car wouldn't have power. After checking the battery with my multimeter I accidentally contacted the terminal and the battery post and the car got power. The battery was only a few years old and in good condition. I cleaned the post and the terminal with a wire brush, bolted it back on tight and never had the issue again. I'm still surprised that despite having solid contact it didn't work. Also, the car was getting Warragamba sized pools of water in the back when it rained. My initial concern was another rust problem. But when I went out on Weds while it was raining and while I had no headliner in I could see a steady stream of water coming through the roof mounted aerial. As this aerial is for the (now removed) car phone I pulled it out and whacked a blanking grommet in the hole. It seems fine now. I'm thinking I might get the hole permanently filled when the rust is fixed. Moving forward and things in progress; The tailgate needs some attention. I have taken all the trim off to clean it all and address some small rust spots. I have partially done all of this but I'll finish it up hopefully this weekend. As all the trim are now entirely devoid of trim clips I have bought a heap of strong velcro and I'm hoping it does a good enough job as any of this trim in good condition is super expensive and usually in Europe as we dont have many of the wagons here. Suspension and brakes!!! This is exciting. In the front; New control arms New sway bar links New lower Eibach springs (the only modification I'm planning on this car) M Sport shocks (these came with the car and will replace the longer shocks in the car) New top mounts Used 540i calipers (stock brakes suck!) New 540i disks and pads (22x296 mm for 528 and 30x334 mm for 540i) New front wheel bearings (thank all that is holy for bolt on bearings!) Annnnd in the back; New control arms New sway bar links Adjustable air suspension arms (fool the car into what the current height is so the self levelling suspension can match the new front ride height) New ball joints I'll also be doing a brake fluid flush while I'm in there. I'm planning on switching the car over to the 16's that came with it so I can clean up and respray the M Sport 17's. They've lost a lot of colour over the years and have some gutter rash. None of this will start until the E90 is back.
    • You mean you will regret it for drifting duties? I don't quite follow.
