Hey all,

i just got myself a greddy front mount and was gonna give it a crack at putting it in myself but i thought i might check out before i do how much it would cost and where i could get it installed. If its a matter of a couple of hundred bucks i might think of getting it professionally put it then i know its in there properly.

So would any of you know where in melbourne i could get this installed and roughly how much? Ive already called up RE customs and they quoted me $250.

Thanks,

Traum.

Dont think they do it any less than $250.. which is a major ripp off i reckon!

Don't try to drill the holes for the piping your self, you'd make a mess out of it. Take it to a exhaust shop or something, get left n right holes drilled and bring it home and do it your self. I'm sure your cooler came with a instruction on how to "self installation"!

Yeah that sounds like a good idea getting some one else to cut the holes casue thats the only real thing i could see a problem with. The other thing is the front bar but i dont know yet if i have to cut it so the cooler fits in, i havent sussed it out yet but i might do that asap. I thought 250 was expensive but if its pretty standard i might consider it.

Oh and as for the self installation, im gonna have to take a crash course in japanese to be able to understand the damn things, god damn japanese instructions!

Just get it proffesionally done, you will be much better off, cutting those holes are a pain in the arse.

Put it this way for $250, you take your car there, they remove front bar, reo bar, remove all unessecary bits and pieces, mount cooler, cut holes, install new piping etc..

That is a damn good price, saves you time and frustration!

$250 is a rip off? For gods sake...

Janissary, i suggest you just stop posting rubbish for the benefit of people who dont know that what your posting is absolutely inaccurate.

By the time the following is performed:

Front bar removed

Holes marked/cut

Trial fitted

Adjustments made (if neccesary)

Permanent fitting performed/piping/clamps etc etc

Front bar attached

Car checked to ensure no leaks in all areas

$250 is extremely cheap considering you drop it off and pick it up same day (in most cases). I would have thought $350 or so

Dont go calling something a rip off if you have no idea what it costs to run profitable business that you rely on to put dinner on the table each night.

Im sure you can do it for free, but time is money at the end of the day, so its costing you one way or another.

You spend half a day/day of your own time and its cost you maybe "half" in value terms... bit for the sake of saving $120 and the very possibility it might not work and you make more of a problem, its pretty easy to see what the smart path to take is if your not confident on DIY

you maybe right nismoid, BUT, say if somone bought a 345 kit from justjap, you pay 200 or there abouts to install...i think thats why people may think it is a rip off. They wouldnt know how much time and effort it would take to get the job done well.

Yeah nismoid... :) Lmao....

250 - is not a bad price actually (and todate RE Customs have done a fantastic job on my car for the exhaust installation and servicing)....and better to get someone to do a good job rather than risk it by doing it yourself. If you have done it before, and know how to do it properly and have the right tools, go for it - but there is always risk involved with doing your own work - and (correct me if im wrong) that might void warranty and all that other crap.

Well i see it this way.. $250 is more than a days pay for some people, for most anyway! Instead of paying $250 for labour, could buy something useful for the car?

$250 is probably the cheapest I've heard.. but then again, installing a cooler is not much of a hard task, your average bloke can do it in a day once you get those holes drilled professionally.

its all about labour...$ $50/hr say thats 5hrs of work...what is the houly rate at a workshop?

The only pain in the ass about installing the intercooler is cutting the hole, if you can get your hands on a metal hole saw just do it like that, when you think about it even if you have to buy the hole saw you'll spend less money on buying it than getting someone else to fit it, and get to know your car more... its a good experience and in an R33 its quite easy, just needs the right tools for the job. Theres a guide on here aswell i'm pretty sure i've seen... its certanly not worth giving someone else $250 for something you can do yourself.

Have a read of Forced Induction.

There are a number of threads "My XXX Cooler kit didnt fit" etc etc

Going by the amount of people that have the inability to install them correctly.

It would stand to reason the the job is not quite as "easy" as most people make out. Im not exactly useless, i've removed turbos/motors etc. Cooler piping is a LOT of assing about.

I would much sooner pay someone to fit it, where i would install a motor rather than pay for it

Mate I've installed two coolers and it's a good 2-3 hours work to do it well. One was a Greddy and the other was an ARC. Both we kits and both were a major pain the arse, the ARC was lesser though. Although you buy a kit the instructions are never in English and they never fit perfect.

In my job I charge $120 per hour. If you cant afford $250 to fit a cooler then I'd think twice about driving a skyline because if you bend it or need to mend it, you'd better be prepared to say goodbye:)

Think about it this way, drop the car off, do your own thing, pick it up - coolers done......mmmmm relaxing.

Yea pretty much its just assing about... with the right tools in your hands i think it makes the job a bit easier, and a mate to help you is good too... having a bit of knowledge of mechanics will help too...

If you are not confident, its not worth doing it yourself... looking back on it i would have paid $250 to get it installed. Not that difficult, but alot of f**king around.. choping fins etc etc. always little problems that pop up that frustrates you to the shit

As mentioned it all comes down to your own confidence. Id say if your only 99% then give it to a professional. No point getting half way and realising your not confident that you can install it correctly.

As ash said, ripping an engine out etc is easy, fitting a FMIC for some reason is never straight forward.

    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
    • While I was waiting for the new parts to come in for the charge pipe and radiator I decided to do some turbo modification. The drive pressure (exhaust backpressure) was a lot higher that I thought it should be. For 32lbs of boost drive was 55lbs. The turbine housing is a 1.10AR and my turbo builder has suggested to go to a 1.25AR. To test if a larger AR would do anything to reduce drive pressure AND not spend any money I decided to hog out the divider in my current housing. I removed it from the inlet and the whole way through the housing.  After reassembly and testing it doesn't look like this modification did anything for reducing drive pressure or requiring more fuel (making more power). Oh well, it was worth a shot. We'll get some data at the track if it makes it past the 60ft. I also machined a $7 shift knob off Amazon to fit my Stillway shifter since I didn't like the Stillway shift knob. Next on the list was the radiator replacement and fabrication of a new intercooler tube that had no silicon coupler. No pictures of this - I was short on time each night after work to get this done and didn't stop to take pictures.  Next was to get the clutch disks out and replaced. Previously when installing the dogbox I had ordered a set of the same sintered iron disks I had been running because I switched to the 26-spline input shaft. I thought it was odd that they didn't have any markings or brand name on them like all my old disks had but installed them anyway. At the track I could not get the clutch to lock up using my normal strategies. After two track nights I reached out to the clutch manufacturer and ask their thoughts. They said they had to switch the material out because they were having trouble getting the original material and that this new material would not take to being slipped very well.  So out with the first set of 26-spline disks and in with the correct material 26-spline disks. While I had the trans out I added an inspection/service hole. I've wanted one of these for a while. Now I can have a look at things and change the front cover shimming when needed (clutch wear). I hustled and got the clutch change done in a few hours on a Saturday. Hopped in the car and drove home. On the way home I did a 1-3 pull. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd the core plug in the back of the cylinder head popped out and dumped all the coolant. Thankfully I was only 30 seconds from home and coasted it there. Datalog showed nothing unusual and 2.5psi of coolant pressure. That plug has been in there since 1992 but I guess it worked its way out. Pulled the trans AGAIN and replaced the plug, JB welded it in, and made a brace. Also deleted the head drain I had added in during the bearing issue fiasco.  I am currently changing my boost control plumbing to make it cleaner. After that is done I'll make another attempt at getting past the 60.
