Looking around for a new headunit, they all seem to be compatible with ipods, and i guess that is the future.

I was thinking about the audio quality of the ipod when plugged up to headunit. Not via an aux input but the cable which connects at the bottom of the ipod. Reading around, this cable transmits songs avoiding the ipod's amplifier which should make the songs sound much better.

Is there any difference between the first gen ipods and the latest version in terms of the raw audio transmitted through the cable?

I dont want some flashy colour screen, or video/photo playback. Just want a base model storage device to transmit clear audio

Although looking around, certain headunits offer a USB port such as the new pioneers in 2007.

Would the headunit be able to handle a usb external 80gb hardrive the same way as an ipod? Or is this pushing the limits of the usb feature?

Seen some laptop external hardrives which are powered by USB alone, and wondering if the headunits provide enough power for the hardrive...

Would rather purchase a hardrive than an ipod

Cheers

According to Clarion USB headunit...

USB Input for Compressed Digital Audio

Anything with a USB output plugs right into the DB365USB so you can hear your music through your mobile entertainment system. The USB (Universal Serial Bus) port takes MP3 and WMA files from portable digitalaudio players and other devices. This source unit can handle 255 digital audio files. File names can be up to 28 characters long, and folder names can be up to 16 characters long.

Quote from carmp3, regarding the pioneer usb cable;

The CD-UB100 will support memory devices unto 250gb that have been formatted in Fat 12,16 or 32. It can have up to 15000 music files on it in up to 500 folders.

It can play...

MP3 files (MPEG1, 2 and 2.5 audio layer 3)

WMA files (Created by Windows Media player version 7, 7.1, 8, 9, 10 and 11(without DRM))

MPEG4 AAC files (iTunes encoded only (without DRM))

The unit will connect to any Pioneer head unit with a 'P-Bus' input...

Iv'e tried it with a bus powerd HDD and it works quite well...

The CD-UB100 will give you an 8 character display on the head unit, this will show USB F001 when playing a file and when your moving from file to file it will display USB T001 ect....

The more advanced 2007 units will give on screen display of the folder and track name.

basically the quality of an ipod and USB would be identical when hooked up to your stereo as they are both acting as storage devices, so the quality will depend on the bitrate of the audio files and your system setup..

if you are interested check the trader thread in my sig for the prices on the 2007 Pioneer models and CD-UB100 adapter..

i can also help you out if your after an iPod or hard drive

it lets you use the deck or the decks remote to control the ipod..

    • Haha, i kow right? Could have bought so many cars for the same amount of money (or less) but driving Unicorn gives you at least +1mln to style 😅. Like wise man said "life's to short to drink cheap wine and drive boring cars" 😉
    • Newbie here, proud owner of an Autech 260RS. I'm on the hunt for wiring diagrams specific to the 260RS, particularly S1. I've ran my eyes through R33, R34 Diagrams, there are some similarities, however continue to find incorrect wire colours and pins on connectors in the 33,34 diagrams.   I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? I'd be happy to pay for the originals in Japanese. I can translate them, at least they would be accurate.   Any help please would be greatly appreciated, never heard an RB26DETT before let alone driven one, and I've got a spaghetti monster of goodness to sort out.   Cheers Benny
    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
