Taking the bnr32 out for its first track day tomorrow at hidden valley and wondering if its worth putting in some octane booster, car is running a remapped ecu (done in Japan as best we can tell by zeni tani) has been checked out by workshop here and all is good, new car and not sure if they had to retune or anything to allow for less octane in fuel . Only good available fuel available in town is BP Ultimate 98RON. Have used NOS brand octane booster before when travelling outside of town and forced to use PULP

PULP 95 +street octane booster 3 = 98 (same as BP ultimate) no drama's with car at all.

Given Jap fuel is 100RON (I believe anyway) and all I couldn't help but wonder if some octane booster even in BP ultimate might be worthwhile.

Two options are street tune NOS stuff +3 octane numbers = 101

NOS race stuff +6 octane numbers = 104

if mixed with BP ultimate.

Damn hot here in Darwin and anything to reduce possible knock is a good idea, Just wondering if anyone has any input? will of course reset CPU if using this blended fuel to allow ecu to advance timing happily.

might as well, it's cheap insurance. if you don't bother resetting the ECU then the ECU will still be using the conservative map it learnt for 98RON. reset it after the track day so any learning for 98+octane boost is trashed :D

My Bad,Yeh sorry wrong terminology used by me,

Packet for NOS stuff says 3 or 6 Full octane numbers, 30 or 60 points so numbers should still add up as stated earlier or damn close to anyway.

I don't think you're going to find anyone with an "other" opinion besides my "it's cheap insurance, do it". somehow, flogging the ring out of a turbo car in darwin weather on standard 98 RON fuel just doesn't seem like a smart idea. put octane boost in for safety and have fun. keep an ear out for detonation, helps to have someone trackside who can help as it can be hard to hear with a helmet on.

if the car has been tuned properly then adding octane booster won't do much as there should be no knock to speak of

but, if its anything below 100% perfect tuning, then adding some might prevent and mild knock and might prolong your engine that little bit longer...

the "its cheap insurance" line has to be true, i mean for $10-20 a bottle and the peace of mind that you probably won't have any pinging... i personally think why not?

Thanks for the opinions my "other " comment should of read more like bump certainly no offense meant.

Yeh tune was pretty good no real knock to speak of ever

Ended up chucking some in and having a damn good time, street tyres on track is "interesting" no pinging overheating or any issues so happy as could be, maybe a little dehydrated though damn hot in helmet and long sleeves n pants in the tropics.

Appreciate the help guys

a whole bottle of nulon pro strength in just under half a tank of shell v-power 98 into my gts't auto a fortnight ago when tookit dragging. I noticed a good difference mainly because it stopped the car pinging like it does even on 98..

my gts t still has the little green sticker in the fuel filler door that i believe states use 100ron fuel only..lol.

imo, it's a big waste of money. I've seen tests done on the octane boosters, and they contain one or a combination of different sorts of active ingredients.

Depending on what it is, it might actually be detrimental.

e.g. adding ethanol boosts octane rating.

I forgot what the term is, but ethanol also has less kj of energy per mol that you burn. I think that's right.

Like people say with the shell extreme 100 octane, you need a lot more ignition timing to run it, otherwise you make less power.

IMO, don't waste your money. It's just marketing. Full sik octane booster makes your car sik.

I drive my car hard everytime I drive it. I don't use octane booster.

If your tune is safe (e.g. checked on dyno), I don't see how using octane booster will make a difference.

If your tune is not safe (e.g. leaning out), then I don't see how using octane booster that one day will make a difference either. If it's always lean and pinging, what's one more day?

Octane booster sucks because they use MMT - stuff which coats your O2 sensor, spark plugs and pretty much everything else.

I would not advise putting methanol in your tank as its extremely corrosive. Adding 10% ethanol would be an alternative however you may need to richen up the car a tad because of the leaning effect of ethanol.

i wouldn't run with the octane booster. as mentioned above they have a few downsides. and they add sweet fck all to the octane rating of your fuel. going from 98 to 98.3 is going to do bugger all except make your plugs and dump pipe, and 02 sensor turn orange after a while from the crud in the additive. as for one brand adding 30 points I call bs on that claim.

Hmm couple of things.

Don't add any fuel additive that changes the density of the fuel. This is just asking for trouble. Yes ethanol will change the density of the fuel.

If you are using a hudrocarbon additive don't touch the stuff or get in on your paint. Cyclic hydrocarbon molecules are seriously evil things - don't breath the stuff in etc. Specifically I am talking about toluene, but this applies to most other additives, even oils & hydrocarbons in general.

Choose your Octane booster wisely. I use this stuff. If you only run it periodically you will find the orange cack doesn't build up much if at all - atleast that is what I have found.

Chances are if a product is marketed as octane booster & fuel injector cleaner it does sfa to the octane rating.

Just my 10 cents.

The "proper" octane boosters do work such as Wynns Race Formula and Nulon ProStrength. There is plenty of tests done and it adds approx 2-3 RON on 98 RON fuel. Its the dodgy $10 stuff in a bottle thats good for nothing.

dunno ifits been covered b4 but my mate rekns if u take mothballs and disolve them in a bit of fuel and strain the wax out then put the liquid into the fuel tank thatit increases the octane like crazy...

no idea ifits true. lol.. anyone know?

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
