I'm trying to buy a full set of Toyo RA-1 Semi slick tyres for supersprint use.

Every tyre place I have called has quoted me dead on recommended retail price, and won't budge an cent in pricing!! The best price I got was RRP, but with a free strip and fit to mount the tyres ($60 value :nyaanyaa:)...

What gives? With any other form of retail, there is usually some discount below RRP. Does anyone know if tyre places accept motor trade pricing like other automotive places?

I'm happy to pay for normal profit margins but I can't bear to pay RRP! Yes I am a cheapass! :nyaanyaa:

There is very little margin on tyres, especially R-comps, which there is low volume. Best way is to make friends with a racecar team and get them to organise the tyres for you :nyaanyaa:

My company is the major sponsor for a vehicle in the Fujitsu V8 Supercar series, I think that's as close as I will get! :nyaanyaa:

Dude, I got these tyres - make sure your not doing more than 2-3 laps in a row - way to soft for any track use, they go off really quickly (great for the street/wet weather use). I won't be buying these again

Hmmm weird I've heard otherwise..

What would you use instead?

The R888's are even softer than the RA-1's arent they?? A lot of people seem to think that the R888's are an awesome tyre...Softness of the compound isnt usually directly related to the heat tolerance is it?

I'd say get another opinion, whoever told you these are good for the track is giving you a bum-steer, I've used them and they are better suited for 1 lap sprints, say hillclimbs or street use - Bridgestone RE55S are a much better circuit tyre, stonger sidewalls as well. Unsure about the R888s but I doubt they would be as soft as the RA1's - I understand the compound in the RA1's is the same as the Nitto drag radials which gives you an idea how soft these are.

I like the R888's for dedicated track use as the RA-1 are best used "buffed" as stated in all their literature, they are also great in the wet "unbuffed". I used the RA-1 on my daily and they were great for hills and occasional track days..

Yes even more reason not to go RA1's for the track - have to buff the things as their tread squirms badly (waste of rubber/$$ if ever I've seen it) + still have the soft sidewall issue.

Ive found the Bridgestones to be the cheapest in 16" and possibly might be in other sizes too.

They are also one of the most common tyres used down here. The local Bridgestone guy uses RE540s in Targa but uses RE55s on the track.

hey Jon - I know the Melb guys are picking their semis up for a steal. Perhaps drop them a line and find out why they get them so cheaply? At the prices they get them for, it might be worth getting them sent up!

Just a thought.

Liz.

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
