Hey guys,

Just been looking at the two tyre types here, just wondering what other peoples thoughts are, and who uses what and which do you guys think are a better tyre - mainly as a second set, thats mainly used on the track (which is like 10 times a year, very rarely!)

Obviously there is different tread pattern,

Ive got a quote for the rt615's for 220 each also and the tempe website doesnt mention much..well, anything at all on these tyres...not muchhelp there! :D

I think they are a good choice if you just have 1 set of tyres and want a nice compromise between street and track, but if they are going on a second set of rims and only being used for track I would go for an R compound. RE55 seems to be the gun choice, but either RE55, or A048 or dunlop DZ02G will all out perform the falkens.

also, I'm not sure if the RT215s are still easily available? I've used them and they are ok, but apparently the 615s are better, but I've never tried them.

There is a big difference in price between the RT615 and any R compound though :D

$220 for RT615 - $300+ for R Comps

yeah, but there is a reason! I mean what the falkens have is a stiff sidewall like an R tyre, and they also have minimal groves for large contact patch, and a good compound that wont tear up and delaminate with heat like cheap street tyres, BUT what they don't have is anywhere near the same grip as an R compound.

well of the 615's are replacing the 215's that answers my question :D hehehe

Beer - I totally agree with what you are saying, but my budget at the moment will only allow me to go falkens. :laugh:

I mean Im not someone who is out there trying every lap to get my PB lower!

But something that will hold up well for my level of skill (lack of? :D ) and then later on if I get a car thats more suited for the track I'll be going the tyres you suggested!

Just for now I think with my level, the 615's and equivalent brands will do for me!

Some sizes aren't available in the 615's yet aswell so there are still some 215's available to fill the holes in the line up. Nothing between a 225 and 255 in the 17inch range to fit a skyline anyway.

Where the hell did you get 615's quoted for 220? I want to go there as best ive gotten for 225 45 17's is about $335

I have the RT 215's on the front and RT 615's on the back of my 33GTSt

I would go for the newer 615's if you can get the right sizes... the older 215's seem to harden a bit as the heat cycle a few times and generally offer less grip as they wear down... the 615's on the other hand are still quite grippy even when they are almost completely worn... I have noticed the understeer has gotten worse in my car as the fronts have hardened

the 615s do seem to wear quicker although that may just be because I have them on the rear and that's where the power comes from! (every time I say power I can't help but think of jeremy clarkson... which is disturbing)

PS. MILES better than street tires (even $$ Michelins) due to the sidewall stiffness and tread design... and they have lasted me 50+ laps around Sandown, 2 motorkhanas and about 10,000 street kms... and I will be finishing them off at PI in a couple of weeks!

I paid $330 a tyre for the RT615s 225 40 18's, from Tempe Tyres!

Hey Guys,

Just stumbled across your thread and thought I might be able to help with sizes. I got a quote today for 215"s after trying to get 615"s for nearly two months. Turns out that you cant get 17 inch 615"s anymore in 225/45, 235/45, 245/45 and 255/40 but you can now get 215"s in most sizes, my quotes were (f) 235/45/17-$305 & ®255/40/17-$339 (Sorry no 265/40) Hope this helps!

I used to run RT215's on a Mini Cooper S. Heaps better than a road tyre - not as good as a track tyre - suffered from heat cycling badly - went hard very quickly.

I run RT615's on my GTR as daily drive tyres.

Better than RT215's for grip and heat cycling - don't seem to go off as fast.

For what you are talking about - I think they would make a nice choice.

As mentioned - they aren't a patch on 'R' compound tyres but are a nice in betweener.

Make a very nice road tyre - yes, even in the wet.

totally agree maccattack... great road tires the 615's and not bad at the track either (my 215's went hard too but 615's were all good)... although Phillip Island was a bit much for them last weekend and they didn't offer the high speed/lateral grip of genuine semis... they get hot very quickly (good for motorkhana) but melt and go all greasy when pushed too hard

I'm with evil_weevil in the respect that these will do me until I feel my driving is up to scratch... then when I get more serious I'll move to some RE55's

    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.      
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
