oil in the catch can is usually from the crankcase ventilation or leaking from the intake

the usual culprit is the oil seal on the turbocharger, they can die / perish

a catch can simply catches it and does nothing more

its more like a fail safe / press F8 to go into safe mode kinda device

empty it out

check your intercooler piping for oil marks and clean them away

drive around for 2 days and check all again

if you have more oil back and piping is oily (as in substantional) then it could be shagged oil seal on the turbo

thanks paul...

yeah i know what the catch can does, i'm just basically asking whether it soulds like the problem is the engine or the turbo or something else?

so you think turbo on its way out?

i might go get a compression / leak down in the next few days while i keep my eye on the turbo and catch can..

As the other guys said.............. also.... could be happening is that u cracked a piston....... usually number 5 or 6. thus letting oil into your cylinder thus causing detonation thus no good!!! The car will run fine for a while but these are a couple of signs. Get it diagnosed properly. Ask your mechanic to do a 'leak down test' this should work out what and where its happening. I know all this coz i have the same problem!!!! except mine has not only cracked it has sh%t it self!!

Yes, you have a problem with pistons / rings sealing inside the bore. I once saw a R34 GTR that would effectively empty its sump into the catch can as soon as it hit boost - turned out to be a hole in a piston.

last comp test was done 1 month ago and was all fine. have spoken to the mechanic and he is going to do another one next weekend

he seems to think it might be PCV valve bolcked or stuffed, so i took it off properly and gave it a good clean

after a few days of good hard driving i haven;t seen another drop in the catch can yet..

I may be able to shed some light on it.

you were not suffering from blow by before the cams by the sounds of it. but since they were installed and even on the dyno you were getting blow by :(

I am guessing the cams have a much longer duration. if that is the case the overlap would be greater. and it has to go somewhere :D

I have seen it once before and the problem was cured with adjustable cam gears and 3 deg retard on the exhaust and a whole 5 degrees advance in the inlet.

There cars were regrinds and i do not remember the specs.

the car was making more power after the cam gear adjustment and no more blowby :D

Hope this helps!

did the cams produce more power?

cams produced about 7rwkw more at the top end but heaps more midrange... but that was with adjustable gears as well... not just cams on their own.. i have no idea what the gears are set at though..

when my mechanic checks the compression i will get him to look at the cam gears also to see where they're at..

yeah the poncams are 256deg duration and 8.5mm lift

yeah but if there's severe blow-by caused by a piston problem, then its going to show up on a compression test.. or so i have been told

the car is not blowing any smoke, and still drives exactly as it has the last 4 years i've had it. if there was no oil in the catch can that one time you would swear there's nothing wrong...

sowwie guys not offering any advice on this matter but just wanting to know how much leak down test cost and last.. my rear turbo exhaust previously ended up in the cat and i was told to get a test done to make sure it didnt damage anything else.. cheers

catch can has been installed as is for the last 12 months and nothing has changed, so unless one pipe has become blocked for some reason, its not the plumbing...

well will see how the drivability changes

obviously i'm trying to grasp hold of any hope here (thus why i'm trying to tell myself its something not serious) and denial is a powerful thing, but i'm just going to keep a close watch on it as its still driving fine

i appreciate everyone's input

Warren.

Leak down always shows stuffed ring lands, usual comp test doesn't always. Piece of mind to stop those sleepless nights get it done. As a bonus you know the condition of the motor a little better. Maybe take it some where else just for the leak down if your current mechanic believes a regular comp test is as good as a leak down at showing engine problems.

Good luck..

Give in to the dark side............<looks at avtar> You know you want to.

    • For these last 7 years of ownership, I've always had to use a small scissor jack under one of the front tow hooks to raise the front just enough so my low-profile jack fits under to reach my subframe jack point. I'm beginning to get annoyed of always having to do this. Are there any lower low-profile jacks that fit under the gtr lip on a dropped car?
    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
