im doing my new engine, need to replace studs and gasket.. i know its going to be a bitch as the last engine was a whore.. i will update you all on how many i break and whos balls i break to get them out lol

Just wondering if anyone can give rough prices on these gaskets and studs, more so gaskets, am looking at updating turbos soon and wondering if the HKS kit with all the gaskets & studs included might be worth it If I can get it cheap enough compared to the garretts wher you have to supply your own?

Used drills and reamers to enlarge the stud slots in the manifold (would have been better with die-grinder - but bunnings wasn't open).

What a c..t of a job.

All looks good now - machined manifold sat flush against head. Almost all back together. Will get some new sparkies tomorrow while piping is off.

It appears the manifold was out from the factory. You could see where all the yokes (spacers) had been sitting and there were a few of them right at the extremities of the slot, stopping the manifold from going on. Wonder if the bloke on the assembly line had to have a hammer with him... hahaha

Nah, it's hard to describe, but i'll try my best. try and visualise it. When it was new, it would have gone smoothly on, like how it does now after you enlarged the holes. The studs would haev sat where they were.

The problme is, being cast, that it warps. After machining it, the manifold is still warped. So where the holes used to be isn't where it is now. Machining it just makes it flat, doesn't unwarp it.

I see your point but I doubt the yokes would have moved over time i.e. you can see they are well off centre by the mark they left..

Good point about the warping and then machining. The amount it had warped was only enough to be out by about 0.8mm end to end, hardly enough to make the huge difference at the slotted holes.. but I guess possible.

I just hope the studs dont give way again otherwise Ill be pissed.

Changing turbo + manifold removal etc takes a while. Would be quicker next time - but hopefully there isnt a next time, atleast on this car :sick:

If you torque them correctly, and if the manifold is machined flat, it should be right. The manifold has already warped, so it might not warp much anymore.

Like I said, my car's still got the stock studs in there, and they haven't broken yet (my car has very very low ks though)

Stud remover bloke: $140 including new studs

Exhaust manifold: $88 Nissan + a couple of missing washers (about $5)

Machining of manifold: $60

So just under $300

Just to confirm, was that $140 including the price of all studs?

How many broken ones needed to be removed?

cos if that's includign the price of all studs, that's not a bad price, coz there's quite a few there, so at $2 each, it's not to bad.

Most stud remover guys charge about 60-80 just to remove 1.

It was to remove 2 broken ones.

He provided the 12 studs and fitted them. Yeah for peace of mind I think it was worth it. He did ask if I had attempted to take the stud out..if so the price goes up to $230+ straight up

That's not bad actually.

that's $24-36 ($2-3 each) worth of studs.

Then a $20 callout fee.

So he charged about $50 to remove each stud. Thumbs up.

Did he use easyouts? or did he weld onto it? From you watching, did it seem like the broken bits of stud were wedged in tight (easyout almost snapping) or were they quite loose?

    • It turns out that Setrab make a fan specifically for the oil cooler which is great and I've installed it with minimal swearing. I removed my 2x 12in push fans from the front of my aircon condenser and wired them into this. My main thermo fans kick on when I use the aircon anyway and would effectively already be working as puller fans through the condensor which is infront of the rad. The push fans (understandably) didn't really do much in the config they were previously in so now they're out. Now we're on to the "Oil fan doesn't really do much either!". Yes I'll duct it next if it does nothing in heavy use which it shouldn't. But hey, the object exists and fits great and is cool. Let me have this. The car is still in the "do my fittings leak oil now? do my wheels actually rub?" phase. I did a spirited drive on them and didn't hear or feel anything. Then I got back home and noticed there were grind marks on the inside of the rims, though I couldn't see where they were touching I got out the grinder and attacked the suspects. Note: I do not know how to use a grinder. Then I realised I had dragged my new rims across my concrete driveway before I did this drive. I didn't think I had damage at that time when I briefly looked...... but remembered this occurred after I did all the angle grinding. The grinding on the wheels in some very specific spots. It's not around the whole rim for example, which lines up with dragging it across concrete more than hitting a suspension component for even 1 full rotation. So everything is currently painted and taped up and I need to test it some more to see if it really IS rubbing, but from inside the car it doesn't feel like it is. In other news I attempted to do a before and after comparison of the heads/cam upgrade thing. Dynos lie, everything is in different measurements. Here is the data from the sandown back straight. Car go faster than before. Vroom vroom.
    • Here's my base ignition. +3 correction to redline when shooting water/meth which is always on. Looking at my old ignition table, I should be able to add 1-2 degree's next time I'm on the dyno.  Let me know your thoughts. 
    • Given what I know now - same haha, but this was 12 years ago with second hand 740cc Nismo injectors in my S15 daily, I was too busy hunting elsewhere for the issue to even look at the injectors, running through some cleaner was a happy coincidence haha
    • Not a terrible idea. But if I ever had concerns that my injectors were sufficiently dirty to be causing me a problem, they would be out of the engine and onto the actual injector cleaner/testing bench.
    • Run some injector cleaner through it I had a similar issue that plagued me for months, even tried replacing the cat. If one or more injectors are blocked up the ecu sees ping so pulls timing and makes the tune rich overall, you'll see black smoke coming out of the exhaust and like me assume it's running rich but it could only be one or two cylinders  $10 bottle of injector cleaner and the next time I hit boost it pumped out a huge plume of black smoke, cleared the blockage and then ran great, if that's not the issue it's only a cheap thing to try haha
