After reading quiete a few threads on the Internet about stroking a rb20 to make a rb24, I decided what the hell and embarked on building one for my 32. I thought i might post up here whats going on and any problems we will run into during the build for anyone else whos been thinking of undertaking this project.

I have most the parts gathered up now with only a couple to come. When i get some pics i will post them up and keep this thread updated as new items are added &/or removed.

Current Part's:

-Eagle H-beam Rods

-ARP 2000 Rod Bolts

-Ross Forged Pistons 83mm Bore

-ACL race bearings

-RB26 Standard crank

-Tomie 1.8mm Head Gasket 83mm Bore

-ARP Head studs

-HKS 264 Cam shafts

-HKS Adjustable Cam Gears

-SARD 650cc Injectors

-Greddy Oil Cooler

-GTR Intercooler 600x100x305

-Garrett GT2876R

-Stainless Low mount manifold

-Custom Dump & front pipe

Parts to come:

-ECU

-Fuel Rail

-Plennum

To current date we have stipped down my spare engine, had it sent out to Bryants Engineering in Brisbane to be bored and honed to suit 83mm bore and acid bathed and the Eagle rods are being re-bushed to match the ROSS pistons.

I am still trying to find/decide on which ecu to go for, i am thinking of giving Adaptronic a try i have heard many good things about them and what features they have for there price. If anyone knows a store who sells and stocks a aftermarket fuel rail for the rb20 please let me know. I am still deciding to go with a off the shelf plennum or getting one made.

Any feedback would be very much welcomed & coments appreciated and i know i will get alot of why not build a rb25 or 26, but i wanted something different.

Cheers

Cameron

Currently for the head we are looking at using 1mm oversize valves if not a lil larger, heads going to be totaly ported etc to suit the other mods. A local workshop in brisbane is building it for me, no real quotes as yet, its all been worked out between the shop and I.

We are looking for 450 - 500 rwhp but I know the turbo will be the limiting factor in the equation.

Good qork. Only comments are i have never heard of the ECU. Power Fc, well tested, works well and wont hinder performance.

Also, the turbo...would be good on a std RB20 but think its way to small for an RB24. Especially at the power you are chasing.

Oh, ok...also. Dont bother with a fuel rail or a plenum. Throw the std gear on there and see how it goes. Match port the inlet. At least that way if you throw a plenum on it at a later date you will KNOW if its actually helping/hurting and what its benefits are. When you are undertakign something like you are i think its important to keep a few known ingredients in the mix. That way if early results are not as expected you have a fair idea where to start the fault finding

Yea i know the turbo is going to be a problem, but that can always be changed down the road where i dont want to and my workshop doesnt wanted to have to pull the engine apart to change things so thats the main focus to start with.

As for the Powerfc, its still a possibility, i have read paulr33's guide of using a rb26 unit on a rb20/24 so we will see, Also looking for coils, eigther spitfire or toyota smart coils or another make, not sure as yet.

ATM my rb20 has 235rwhp on 12psi, my target is 400hp but engine should be good for a fair bit more.

Thanks for your comments guys keep them comming

The turbo wont even come in pissing range of 450rwhp dude :bunny:

Closer to around 300-350rwhp would be more expected :P

You'll need to go much larger yet!

Very interested in seeing the progress man... if you have any direct links to resources for the build please share them too ;) ...

I have been considering doing this myself to my rb20 but as the cars used daily its quite impossible at this time... but id like to know how responsive it would be in low range power band... im chasing 300rwkw from my RB20 Onevia... but something unique like rb24 would give it that extra appeal.

Dont get too carried away with talk about exhaust A/R. It pays ti understand what that really is. Its only a ratio, Cross sectional area of turbine nozzle to radius of the scroll

So if you have a tuebo with a 65mm turbine, and then a turbo with a 40mm turbine. They can both have the same A/R but the larger turbine means it will have also have a larger radius. So in order to maintain that A/R value you will need a larger corss sectional area. Larger cross sectional area the better the exhaust flow, but less velocity to spin the turbine.

So you really need to consider the wheels izes in conjunction with A/R etc to decide how laggy the turbo will be

Very intereting,

the turbo is this one, maybe somsone with more nderstanding could translate for the rest of us

Garrett GT2876R

As for lag on a RB20, i dont know yet only just finished the install, and been flat out at work so havn't finished making the dump pipe as of yet, one more section to go. But i will let you know when i drive it, i previously had a cheapy highmount t04e on there and came on full boost 16psi at 5100rpm :P

how much did the pistons set you back? if you don't mind me asking

I'm nopt sure they where part of a package deal, because the dude building had them already from a previous deal which fell through, same with a couple of the other items

I've been checking out the Adaptronic for a while now here: http://www.adaptronic.com.au/index.php

and it seems to be a good thing. Has the sort of features found on other units costing $$$ and there is an Adaptronic community for support. Should prove to be a good thing, I believe.

PFC is already a known quantity though.

I'd second other comments about the turbo too. At that planned power level you're going to need big mass airflow = big revs + big boost. What's the planned usage for the car?

Trying to work out your thread title too - what's water got to do with it?

Yes the adaptronic do look like a pretty dam good ecu for its small price tag, I am also looking at getting a Garrett GT3040R rated at 650hp.

The cars main use... hmm i havent driven it since Mid December lol so pretty much just once a week driving, odd car show maybe the odd dyno comp

    • Yeah, nah. I had the actuator rod off it today. The arm will not move at all. Neither out, nor in. Yeah, you'd think so, but I've been thinking about that. Even when the actuator rod fell all the way off at the beginning of this saga, it would build more boost and faster in lower gears than it would in higher gears, and you'd think that that was the opposite of what should happen. But I strongly suspect that there is a thing with the gearing getting the revs to rise faster, that there must be some transient effect with the gas flow rate rising quickly, that you don't get with the more steady state case of the higher gears. Keep in mind - the gate is not shut in either of my weirdnesses. So things are not "normal". We normally think about a turbo spooling up (below the wastegate target) with the gate shut. I have all sorts of mental models running now where the gate is a little bit open, and having it stuck open allowing gas out while it should be going through the turbine has all sorts of weird effects (in these mental models). I'm thinking in the higher gears, the ex mani pressure builds to the point where enough gases spill out the wastegate to just prevent the pressure rising much more at all, or just creeping up, all the whole the revs are increasing and getting closer to the point where a gear shift becomes necessary.
    • Is it possibly wastegate actuator itself is sticking, or even the rod to flapper? Otherwise I reckon things are getting a bit rusty/worn   Also odd it won't boost in 3rd to 5th, but will in 1st, I'd expect the other way around with it slightly open as there's more time on your way to redline for it to spin up
    • Does anyone know ow what these two plugs are for and if they should be unplugged? Just put the dash back together and can't remember if these were plugged in before or unplugged! (Blue and white plugs) 🤦🏽‍♂️
    • Did some FASTing ...got the impression that the actual part# was a moot point ; seems all of these hardlines for coolant are discontinued/NLA... like, I take it you're after the hardline that bolts onto to the manifold...that's NLA according to amayama & nengun .... ...just to clear up some confusion, they typically mounted the AAC valve to the intake manifold somewhere near a coolant passage, so the body of the valve heats up & holds it open when engine's up to temp - no coolant flows through the valve, it's a mechanical, thermal connection.
    • And now the bloody flapper is jammed slightly open. Lazy as all f**k in 3rd-5th (very hard to convince it to make much boost before you run out of revs), but will make 12 psi in 1st, which shouldb't be possible with a 5 psi spring and controller set to <10 psi. Methinks I'm lucky it jammed where it did, rather than fully closed. It's actually a well weird situation. Careful examination of what's happening in the back of that housing when the gearbox comes out and all the other stuff (injectors, AFM retune) is supposed to be done, next week.
