Hi guys I was wondering if you guys can give me a hand on this one. As this has totally got me stomped.

Ever since I got my FMIC installed my boost won't go past 2psi.

I have checked all connections and there is no leak. But I can still hear an air leak somewhere.

I totally have no clue where it is coming from.

Does anyone have any ideas to what things I would need to check?

I have been told to check all air linked things. Besides the FMIC connections is there any other things that I should check?

Cheers

just tighten everything, it may not leak under vacum (idle) but will on boost. it sounds pretty bad if its only hitting 2 psi, perhaps your gauge is stuffed or getting a signal from the charcoal canister or something. if it feels slow then obviously this is not the case .

even the wastegate should hold it at at least 6

When I rev the car on idle I can see the wastegate opening up.

So that shouldnt be a turbo problem.

Acceleration is very poor as if its struggling.

If I put soapy water over it, wouldnt it just suck it in? not blow it out as bubbles?

the leak will be big enough to see/hear it wont be a little fine leak i wouldnt expect

the gate shouldnt open at idle or shouldnt have enough load to open at idle

sounds like the gate might be stuck open, this would explain laggy operation and jack all boost

have u ever had that issue before? strange that u would notice it all of a sudden

Wastegate sounds to be stuck open, or opening WAY too early

Check you connections for the actuator etc, as others have said, it should NOT be opening at idle.

Also check that you have nothing INSIDE the pipes.

New pipes/intercoolers often come with packaging in them.

oops my mistake, almost completly off.

What happened was the T clamp wasnt done up, i run abour 24 psi boost so it pushed it off and i run map sensor so the car ran fine with massive leaks. The silicone was just still touching around the intercooler inlet as it couldnt come off completly as the body of the car held it on.

on another note does the car splutter as it should run rich as with such a large boost leak if its AFM base computer

it sounds like your wastegate is stuffed if you had a leak that bad from the intercooler your car would be running like a dog would be very rich and wouldn't idle well. the other thing is there could be some stuffed up one of the pipes not the first time that has happened

The wastegate opens up only when I rev the car at idle.

So I should check the pipes on the intercooler to make sure theres nothing stuck inside.

Could it be something to do with boost controller by any chance?

are u sure you are thinking of the same thing? i think you are confused

what is the "wastegate opening" how are u measuring if its opening?

what does it look like? does it make a sound? i think you are thinking of the stock bov noise

You shouldn't be able to produce boost when you free-rev the engine. There is no load to create enough exhaust gas to turn the turbine to create the boost. If the wastegate is opening under this situation, then the wastegate is kaput.

So how do I fix that? Its just the stock turbo?

Even my other turbo (highflow) didnt want to go past 2psi so I put the stock one back on.

Both turbo's did the same thing... I don't think both wastegates are screwed.

I do notice that while driving, under load (when the boost builds up) it releases and makes a hissing sound.

Couldn't this be more on the actuator because it was used on both turbo's to get the same result

Wastegate is activated by boost pressure and most often lots more than 2PSI. As others have said , you shouldn't be getting any boost by free revving. You should have mentioned that your other turbo did the same thing before.

How are you measuring boost ? U sure the guage is working OK ?

If your wastegate is opening under free revving conditions - this may indicate a blockage somewhere between turbo and cooler/throttle body.Is the car hard to start ?

Where is your boost gauge plumbed in ?

Sounds very strange to me.

    • Yeah pretty impressive hey, good to see quality products not over-shooting their prices. That's what drew me to buy the hypergear turbo, just a shame I've never got the chance to see it in action
    • Thank you GTSBoy and MBS206 I have done the compression test with the motor out of the vehicle, reason for the test was to see if I needed to remove the head and do rings etc while its out. I'm in the process of respraying the vehicle and tidying up a few things. Story behind it all is I've just purchased the skyline and it was running when I got it, never drove it on the street though as I wanted to pull it down and do it all up again before registering it. the gentleman I purchased it from told me the motor has a forged bottom end and has a decent tune through it but I was going to pull the sump off anyway to see if it is a forged bottom end. that's why I thought id do a compression test beforehand.
    • Man, I'm kind of amazed that the price of the turbo has not changed in 7 years. Everything else is inflating beyond reason, but not this? Good on Tao / hypergear I guess? Anyways, good luck with the sale!
    • I'm selling my brand new, in the box, never used Hypergear ATR45 - and I had some additions I paid for a few yrs back when I purchased it. Never ended up having the rest of the money to add all the mods at once, so I just ended up slowly selling each part. I originally had it internally gated, with the dump pipe, however I found it was incompatible with what I was going to use it for, so I contacted (I think Ken) from Hypergear, and he and I messaged back and forth & he got me to ship the turbo back, where they modified it & made it externally gated, and gave me the 5 bolt dump pipe attachment for custom welding. (Photos below) This turbo like I said has never touched the inside of an engine bay, it's completely brand new, never used, been sitting in the same box it arrived in, covered in plastic & all. Below are the photos of it: And while the guys at Hypergear were making it in-shop, they sent me some photos of the process: I'm looking at selling this just because I'm in need of the money right now, and don't have plans on modifying the 34 anytime soon - and from reviews & peformance sheets, this turbo had amazing results back when I was researching. The turbo was purchased in 2018 for $1.9k, with the mods I got added on. Looking at the website now, for the same turbo they sell (ATR45SAT), with the current addons it adds up to $1830 for the turbo Current addons included: - Bolted dump adaptor - Ball bearing CHRA - Braided oil feeding line So I'm looking to possibly sell it for around $1800, with shipping included in that 1.8k, It cost me around $120 to ship - so yeah thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone was interested in purchasing. Cheers!
