Was a great day, thanks to the WRX club for the organisation and Gareth/John for stepping in to fill Snowy's shoes as he didnt show, really appreciate it guys.

Enjoyed the super sprints later on but car just seemed to lack power all day compared to everyone else so might need a dyno run to see how it is performing. Concentrated more on the corners and upping the psi (tyre boost!) made it a lot more fun to slide out of the corners rather than slowing and accelerating again more than needed.

Times were very poor but did manage to improve significantly after upping the pressures from 36 to 42 after advice from Roy Cushan, thanks mate :P

Need more power now and track time. :)

Great day for racing.

Sandown can be a daunting track for a first timer.

Spoke to a lot of people, built up the confidence with every session and followed a few others around to get an idea and this all helped greatly. Thanks to those who offered their advice, I appreciate it.

Was really enjoying it by the end of the day.

ps what's up with the snowsmobile?

Great lap time for your first Sandown Archie, your thing has a wicked top end. Maybe a 50 shot of gas will help get it out of corners.

Great day....thanks to all the organisers.

I think this is my best result.

Definately done a head gasket on mine.....Now its time for rebuild. :PBJ:

Hope to make it to Winton....rwd class seems to be heating up.

Garreth your a mad man......i wanna sponsor you some tyres just to see how fast you could go.

Thanks Andrew. Congrats on your PB too. 22's ain't hanging around and now that I know what it takes to get there I have great respect for you guys doing those times (or anyone in the 1.2X's for that matter, not to mention the crazy guys doing sub 1.20's!!)

lol @ Ash

Which NOS installer do you guys recommend?? :)

I second that. A man doing those times on street tyres with that car is a great steerer. Well done.

I headed out for my first sandown session with another datto mate after joining SAU a couple of months ago and had a ball. I was in the white datsun 1600 with poorly setup rear suspension and old hard rear race tyres, just couldn't keep the dam thing straight! had a spin, had i little elctrical fire, got towed, lost brakes (as in LOST brakes) at the end of the back straight but its all racing i guess. you GTR boys sure are quick!

is there somewhere where all the times are listed?

That was some real fun, close and fast laps we were doing out there. 240kph and only a couple of feet apart. You cracked me up. I was laughing big time watching that big single hit mid corner and seeing you end up totally sideways. Too cool.... Make sure you get to Winton. It's much more fun..

Yeah, looking back now it was great fun.

I particularly enjoyed when you went past me at turn 1 and so getting the opportunity to follow you for as long as I could in an effort to help me get a better idea of what speeds you do (esp through the back section). I can tell you that was the fastest I had taken that back section all day! Then in trying to stay with you at the left hander at dandenong put down the power too early and that's where you would have been looking at a crossed up car in your rear vision mirror and laughing.

I don't have good memories of Winton *cough* spun big end bearing *cough* and the tightness of the track makes my lag problem even more pronounced dammit!! But i agree it is a fun track.

What a fantastic day. The car felt really good once I got the feel of it again and knocked 3 thenths of my last time. Had a few issues with the car having some blow by clogging up my afms which had the same effect of a cooler pipe blowing off which ended 2 sessions early. It has also done an exhaust gasket somewhere in the line which dropped the performance a little but it still went ok.

I gained so much more confidence with the car carrying more corner speed though the back section and turn one but by the last sprints they had turned the timers off so don't know if it was faster. Most of it was found when the pads failed to grip as much as I would like. There was no fade but it also wouldn't lock the brakes as hard as I tried.

Ray if you want to arrange something let me know. I would love to have a go with some sticky tyres since mine are rated at 280 and re55's are 40 so there is a heap more corner speed and braking available.

Well done to everybody. I had some great fun when there was about 4 of us racing around together for a few laps even though I was scared of going up the back of John.

Alan I'll start a new topic soon on cornering. It would be good if we could get a picture/drawing of the track and everybody could draw and explain the different lines they take at Sandown. There is a lot we could still learn from each other. Just one good point I believe would make it wothwhile.

Here is my track data for the day.

I am still scratching my head as to the lap in red as I have no idea where that extra top speed came from up the back straight, and it wasn't even my fastest lap. Add up all the fastest sectors for the day and my theoretical perfect lap was a 1.21.48.

My corner loads where not as high as P.I. so can possibly go faster over the back at the left hand sweeper. Then again I drove it home with the only thing missing being fuel so I'm happy.

What a great day...a big thatnks to all the organizers and marshalls

It was great to see all the GTR's ripping up the track with some old faces back in action. John...big thanks for our close battle in the middle of the day was a highlight for me trying to catch you through those corners  Archie....good to see your beast back on the track mate....awesome straight line speed :P ...and Gareth everyone says it but you sir, are a madman  watching you take the left-hander at the end of the back straight on street tyres is a memory that will last

    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
    • My experience with Rising Sun Exports Before agreeing to the sale I tried to do as much research as I could (obviously), his Facebook reviews are 98% and he goes Live at least once or twice a week. I contacted 2 people in the UK who had used him for their imports, both had positive feedback. His explanation and talk through of the import process was thorough, answering any query no matter how stupid it was. It felt as soon as the money was sent, communication dropped off. I asked for shipping updates every 2 weeks or so, not wanting to pester him, he never had any updates. I wasn't informed the car had been dropped off at the port, I only found out by his Facebook story. I asked for the photos taken at the port, knowing he would need some for insurance purposes. I received a few 5 second clips and that's it. When asked again, he said his staff had them. Weeks later I asked again, he tells me he doesn't have any, but does have 50 photos from the original advert. I never received them. I eventually got the documents sent via WhatsApp after I mentioned the port was requesting them. I purchased a CarVX report, to find out the vehicle is a Grade R with recorded accident damage, first recorded in 2017 when it was first auctioned. He never told me the grade, then again I didn't ask. His response was "Grade R means nothing, it wasn't chassis damage". Still, I would have liked to have been informed about it. Jon prides himself on being open and honest when it comes to inspecting cars, it's his main job doing so at the auctions for customers. When the vehicle arrived in the UK I noticed a few little cosmetic issues. It's a 21 year old car so it wasn't going to be mint condition. The side skirts are cracked on each corner and the sealant is failing. The front grill on the bonnet/hood isn't secured very well, mounting studs are missing. Both minor things, but again, it would have been nice to be told. During a Facebook Live walk around video of the vehicle, he mentioned it has a front Whiteline anti roll bar/sway bar. While on the inspection ramp, I noticed the stock item has been installed. When first questioned, his response was "the ARB? Switched? Since when, it never had them". Since sending video and photo evidence I've not received a response. I'm probably being over critical of the overall condition of an old car, but all I wanted was honesty (which he claims to have). I'm aware I wasn't his only customer, he's busy doing XYZ but other reviews praise him for great communication with regular updates and photos, I felt I didn't receive the same treatment.
