As the topic says, I've bought an R34 GTt Stock turbo, and I just wanted to know if anyone knows if the water lines and everything should bolt up directly when we do the swap?

I'm trying to find out now, so I know if I have to outlay some more money for braided lines or something.

I'd rather not spend the extra money as I don't have a whole lot to spare.

Not sure how true this is but I've always thought that part of the 20kw increase with the R34 was due to the bigger housing on the turbo. The other major change was improved VVT.

For this application, the R34 turbo should give some gains to an R33 s1. The r33 s2 has the same ceramic turbo as the r34 but the r34 also has a plastic (nylon) compressor wheel, which I dont think the the r33 has. This makes the R34 turbo slightly more lightweight and therefore should give better response in theory.

All the best with it

Series 2 R33 turbo's have the nylon compressor wheel as well.

Thanks guys.

I'm only upgrading because I have a suspicion that my stocker is possibly on its way out.

And I got the turbo at a really good price.

let us know how it goes performance wise

dont spose you want to get before and after dyno runs for us? :P

In regards to whether it is a worthwhile performance upgrade if you have a working r33 turbo - not really. Not really worth the money for minimal minimal gain.

If you had a busted turbo then sure, why not go for an r34 one since it's newer.

For a 34 turbo, you're looking at paying around 450 (cheaper if you're lucky). save that money towards an aftermarket turbo instead of going for 5-10 kw (if even). I've ran a 34 turbo before, and difference was minimal.

^^ Too true....

The only thing you really need to remember when going aftermarket, is that turbo is never the only thing you can or need to upgrade.

And then theres that whole modding bug thing that you'll never get away from :action-smiley-069:

yeah, definitely monkey. that's spot on the money in regards to ecu, injectors, afm, cluch, tyres, suspensions etc to take advantage of the turbo.

I think I might have been a bit unclear. what I was saying was, for someone with a working r34 turbo, it's not really worth the 'upgrade'. migth as well save up for the a/m turbo. but of course, they need the other parts, as you said above.

but for someone with a busted turbo, they can either go cheap and get a 2nd hand one, where they might as well get a newer r33 one or r34 one (less ks). or, if they want more power, better to go a/m - refer to mods needed above ;)

    • You know how your car rolled through a fence in your last jacking escapade? Scissor jacks increase the likely hood of that sort of thing happening immensely!

    • Just trying to get my head around this. At 5psi of boost, you turn on your wmi pump, and then you're using a 3000cc injector, to allow flow upto the actual engine, where you have your 6x200cc injectors and a 500cc injector. If the above is correct, what advantage are you obtaining by having the 3000cc injector blocking flow, is this just incase a line breaks between that injector and the motor you can stop flow immediately? Or are the 6x200cc and 500cc less injectors and just spray nozzle?
    • Welcome! New member myself, but I had an R33 back in 2002. Best advice I could give, based on my experience: if you're running the factory turbo, be very conservative with boost. I made the mistake of just fiddling around with the boost controller and cranking the boost for fun, and the end result was my intake pipes popping off frequently from the constant deluge of oil that was being blown into the recirc by the stressed-out turbo, which itself was siphoning oil from the engine and farting it out both sides of its centre bearing (or something to that effect). If I could do it all again, I would have gotten a new turbo and had a tune dialled in professionally and then just left it alone! Funny you mention the metal shavings in the gearbox, as I had the same thing - the probe plug (magnetic drain plug, essentially) would come out caked with shavings. At least it was doing its job. Not sure if that's just sacrificial wear and part of the deal, or if my gearbox was shagged, but I wasn't abusing it. Enjoy the R33 - they're a dying breed, and if they weren't $35k+ on CarSales in Queensland, I might have picked up one of those again, instead of the 370GT I own now (though I'm loving the 370GT, that big 3.7L V6 just hits different).
    • Howdy folks. I owned an R33 back in 2002, which was thoroughly beyond my capacity (financially speaking) to maintain/insure, so we parted ways in 2004. Fast forward 21 years (to literally yesterday, in fact) and I'm now the proud owner of a 2007 V36 370GT. I'm happily surprised by how much power the VQ37VHR makes, compared to the RB25DET, considering the latter is turbocharged. I had planned to add a turbo at some point but I'm on the fence about whether I'll even need it (though I do love the sudden onset of extra torque). Any other 370GT owners around the traps, I'd love to hear about your experiences with this car (good and bad).
