Hey everyone, im getting close to re-assembling my Rb26 and have my heart set on the HKS GT-SS turbo kit. I've heard mixed results comparing them to rebuilding my stock ones through Aaron at sliding performance. Yet to ask him for his thoughts. Some say the rebuilt ones are only slightly laggier than the stock items and have potential to make more power than the HKS GT-SS turbos. Others say the response from the GT-SS turbos is phenomenal. I like the sound of the ultra quick response the GT-SS provide, however I do want a pair of turbos that will perhaps one day provide me with big power as the bottom end is built quite tough. Can some of you guys who have first hand knowledge tell me what you have found with either combination. Keen to hear about power i could expect from either setup and response of the two.

Many thanks,

Deren

Change the turbos when you rebuild it then :P

Its only going to be another 2.5k on whats going to be nearly 5 figures anyhow.

So GT-SS for now, and if you think its not enough power or whatever, change when you rebuild.

Thanks guys, the car has been off the road for about 2 years now as ive been rebuilding it ground up. See my restoration thread.. Im about to re-assemble the engine so i was starting to get serious with what turbos i wanted to use. I know the obvious comparisons you can make between the two ie: one is roller bearing the other is not etc. However i wanted to hear some opinions of guys who have actually sampled both.

Garrett 2860-5's FTW check out "The Alchemists" dyno results on here somewhere he changed from GT-SS to 2860-5's after like 3000 k's or so spool up almost identicle but made more up top,

from memory wasnt an over the top built motor either just poncams etc, it a few beers to late for me to be to accurate

I just brought a pair offa slide and the cost is better than the HKS tax too with most importantly the possibility of a little more power to boot. :)

Ahh very interesting. Will that be a direct bolt on replacement? I've had a 'direct bolt on' from garrett before on a s13 silvia (2560r) and it took much work to fit it including a fair bit of fabrication. Thats something i dont want to have to do on my car. However from what you said it does sound interesting.

Yeah i know i can get GT-SS from Nengun for $2700 delivered, but thats even better. However i am quickly beginning to prefer these Garrett 2860r-5. I like the HKS kit because it comes with everything i would need to fit them. From previous experience buying/fitting turbos from garrett you are supplied with poorly fitting gaskets not to mention the fabrication i found necessary to fit the turbo. Can anyone tell me first hand if this is the case with the 2860r-5 turbos. Also could anyone give me an upto date price on them?

EDIT: Sorry missed that price Ronin. I guess the advantage i'll have is i'll be building the engine/fitting the turbos on an engine stand so it wont be too hard to get any minor changes made. I just dont want to have to modify inlet snounts or anything like that. Anyone fitted these suckers themselves and can tell me what mods are needed?

Im driving a 34GTR and with the standard ball bearing turbo's reconditioned once, i was able to get 385awkw.

With the GT-SS now, im doing 472awhp at 1.6 bar.

For me, the standard turbo's felt more responsive although it could be due to the tuning?

Im not too sure the GT-ss's sure feel laggier as compared to my standard turbo set up but still very responsive and comes very fast wheh compared with other turbos.

I think the apexi AX75? or AX67? sumthing like that. A twin set up as well. Ive tried it on a friends car with the Tomei Derive RB28... Awesome turbo's.. Not much lag and very responsive as well..

just my 2 cents. Hehe

I see, thanks for that.

Im tied between the HKS GT-SS turbos now and the Garrett 2860r-5 turbos.

I cant choose one. The garretts arent in a kit and will need gaskets and some modification to the oil returns but i can buy them from australia (no possible taxes). They look just as responsive as the GT-SS turbos and look to have the ability to make more power aswell.

However the GT-SS turbos are in a complete kit with everything i need to fit them, only marginally more expensive, and a proven responsive package, but will buying these from nengun for about 2700 delivered incur me duty tax? Anyone got any knowledge on that?

Many thanks,

Deren

hi Deren,

i am in the same boat at the moment deciding on what to upgrade to. i am leaning towards the 2860R-5 because they seem to fit the response/power balance i am after. also they are currently only $2450 del from slide :P i have a friend who imported some HKS 2530 through greenline a while back and he tells me that he did pay a tax on arrival at customs, about 10% on top. i know what you mean about the gaskets- i have been quoted roughly $300 from nissan for everything required. so if you factor that in they end up very similarly priced....

hope that helps, Mike

Cheers Mike, its a tough call i know :D Im thinking to go down the 2860r-5 path also. One reason being i had the head and turbos off not long ago and can reuse most of the gaskets. So that leaves me with some elongated holes on the oil return flanges. Hopefully nothing else pops up causing problems. I didn't realise they were $2450 from slide, thats even cheaper! I think im sold.

Deren ;)

    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
