Hey guys I got a dyno run on saturday and my AFR is dangerously lean.. I'll try scan the graph and post it up.

But to fix this I will need a new fuel pump correct? I was recommended the the bosch 044 by Hyperdrive but then I've had someone tell me that its the wrong one for the R33 and I need the 040? I'm sure Hyperdrive know what they're talkin about though..

So any advice would be sweet as!

Hey man, I was in this position about a year ago, pretty stock R33, Leaning out. . .

Ended up getting an 044 through HyperdriveMS. . . They fit with a bit of modding and will pump right down to the bottom of the tank no probs. . . Just sounds like your boot is full of bees.

Be sure to check your AFM is not dirty, especially if you run an oiled pod. as this will stop the AFM from reading all the airflow and the ECU will be leaning out.

if you get one through the traders on here they are pretty cheap now i think!

I had the same as you when I had my 100K service done and was told that I needed a new fuel pump. I got a quote of about $1000 for a stock and $1200 for a NISMO version.

If you don't mind getting it online you can go to Greenline http://www.greenline.jp/ and get a NISMO from Japan.

Cost me $430 delivered to my door ex Japan and took less than a week to get here.

The Bosch 040 is an intank (044 External) and I fitted one in my GTS4 because of similar problem but turned out to be the std small Fuel Filter was clogged so bad I could not even blow thru it when taken out.

Replaced it with a much larger and highflow unit from a volvo truck or something.. it was much better just harder to mount but used a 3' clamp around it and bolted to std location OK.

I got an 044 for $214.50 delivered off ebay, pretty sure there is a trader on here that does them for about the same price. Was going to just install the 044 for peace of mind but am holding off till I get a surge tank and a Bosch 910 (910 to draw through the intank pump and feed the surge tank then the 044 to the engine).

Bosch here too - 040, less than 200bux, oh and DIY install. You'll just need a few hose clams and pliers :rant:

You can make a day of it, getting high in your boot with the fumes. I recommend it to anyone.

Oh, and run down the fuel till the light comes on before you start fishing around in there - soaking your arm in petrol will guarantee to cause "interesting dreams" when you fall asleep next to it.

Ok well I'm certainly not spending a grand on a fuel pump... should have checked the AFM and stuff when I was at Hyperdrive :rant:

Well I'll book it in for an 040 or something and while that's taken out we'll check the 'fuel filter' and see if it's not clogged up or something. Is there anything else that might cause the problem?

And will the car be running rich after a bigger fuel pump is installed?

i agree with going for the nismo pump, includes everything for a direct swap, not just that pump that needs moding like bosch pumps,

autoworx do them for $450 less 5% for members and they dont sound as noisy as the bosch pumps

but that just my opinion :thumbsup:

?? i got my RB20det done at hyper on sat too with the same probs!!! wtf?? but they said the 040 would suit me!? well at least i now know what to look for!

was also told (by others) the Walbro is just as good as the bosch but not as noisy or costly....... ta guys!

Lol true... I'm going to just take it easy and stay off the boost untill I can get a 2nd dyno somewhere else to compare.

I was there around 11am btw.

Hey guys Im certainly no expert on this stuff but just to add a bit more:

dodgsun - The reason they said 040 suits you is the style of inlets on the pumps, r32s have a conventional flat bottom fuel tank and have no worries with the mesh bottom on the 040, whereas the R33 tank bottom is not flat and they need a threaded bottom to accept the standard pickup tube and filter sock. Hence 044. . .

The Walbro pumps have been tested and shown to be no good at higher power because they lack the flow at high pressure needed for rising rate regulators and high boost.

Bosch are noisy but you can only hear it at idle with the stereo off or outside the car, no big deal IMHO. If you rubber mounted it it would be quiter Im sure.

SKY RYAN - changing pumps will not effect the mixture because the FPR sets the pressure not the pump, so it will keep the same pressure with more flow available. . .

Why don't you change your fuel filter as well anyways just to eliminate the possiblilty?

    • Just trying to get my head around this. At 5psi of boost, you turn on your wmi pump, and then you're using a 3000cc injector, to allow flow upto the actual engine, where you have your 6x200cc injectors and a 500cc injector. If the above is correct, what advantage are you obtaining by having the 3000cc injector blocking flow, is this just incase a line breaks between that injector and the motor you can stop flow immediately? Or are the 6x200cc and 500cc less injectors and just spray nozzle?
    • Welcome! New member myself, but I had an R33 back in 2002. Best advice I could give, based on my experience: if you're running the factory turbo, be very conservative with boost. I made the mistake of just fiddling around with the boost controller and cranking the boost for fun, and the end result was my intake pipes popping off frequently from the constant deluge of oil that was being blown into the recirc by the stressed-out turbo, which itself was siphoning oil from the engine and farting it out both sides of its centre bearing (or something to that effect). If I could do it all again, I would have gotten a new turbo and had a tune dialled in professionally and then just left it alone! Funny you mention the metal shavings in the gearbox, as I had the same thing - the probe plug (magnetic drain plug, essentially) would come out caked with shavings. At least it was doing its job. Not sure if that's just sacrificial wear and part of the deal, or if my gearbox was shagged, but I wasn't abusing it. Enjoy the R33 - they're a dying breed, and if they weren't $35k+ on CarSales in Queensland, I might have picked up one of those again, instead of the 370GT I own now (though I'm loving the 370GT, that big 3.7L V6 just hits different).
    • Howdy folks. I owned an R33 back in 2002, which was thoroughly beyond my capacity (financially speaking) to maintain/insure, so we parted ways in 2004. Fast forward 21 years (to literally yesterday, in fact) and I'm now the proud owner of a 2007 V36 370GT. I'm happily surprised by how much power the VQ37VHR makes, compared to the RB25DET, considering the latter is turbocharged. I had planned to add a turbo at some point but I'm on the fence about whether I'll even need it (though I do love the sudden onset of extra torque). Any other 370GT owners around the traps, I'd love to hear about your experiences with this car (good and bad).
