has anyone read the temp the oil gets up to? my boss (used to be the x-trac guy in aus) says the straight cut gears heat it up alot..

also ive got the box in,(straight cut) man it was a hard week of learning how to shift at low rpm :P but ive got it pretty well down. basicly having a pause between each up shift then quickly engaging it. and rev matching on down shifts.( almost broke my hand a few times when my concentration slipped)

no thud or bauking. but having the standard tailshaft and a relativly heave os r3c clutch doesnt help... il e getting a 1 piece molly one from uas i think, as mines got heaps of play in the joints and damn its loud when changing fast at low revs :/ a big ting/thud can be had if the revs dont match.

but one thing i found is my hand can go faster then my feet. so perfecting changes is still abit off yet lol.

sorry to hijack this thread, but as it seems there are a few people here who use the PPG dog box i thought i might throw up some Q's

We have finally broken the little old stock RB25 box and am upgrading the gearset..... car makes about 450rwkw and is predominantly street driven, about 5000klms a year. Other than that it gets drag raced with ET Streets and a gearbox breaking 2 step :) What would people suggest???

Was looking at the helical dog box, this is the quietest option, but am now a little concerned about wear on the dogs. Given i cant get the box out without removing the engine i dont really want to be taking the box out every couple of years just to repair/replace dogs. I am not really a synchro abuser so would the helical synchro box stand up to about flywheel 800hp????

Any suggestions??? pros, cons etc

yeah, if this one i got didnt pop up i would of gone helical and synchro. after a week of learning it ive got it 90% down. but.. you can change gear faster at normal cruising speeds with the synchro one. ie. 2000-4500rpm. (most street revs)

one thing i found with the dog box is that at low revs you have to rev match it or its just a nasty hand jarring experiance. and not to mension hard on the diff/tailshaft.

so cruising around is a chore. have to revmatch it and take time on upshifts. so basicly rev match it or change at 8 grand if you want it nice.

but 1st to 2nd is a nasty change. no matter how hard and fast i jam it in it atill doesnt feel as nice as 3rd.4th,and 5th. anyone else have this issue? and is it because the 2nd gear has more dogs and is bigger?

oh, and while i was inspecting the gearbox, the bolt for the 5th shift fork was loose :s and i made a spacer for the 5th gear bearing. so if the circlip moves the gear wont :) is that what you meant russ?

top job mate, thats exactly what i meant!

cheers russ

We had the same issue with a GTR we prepare and Terry from Award diffs said soemthing about the clutch being partly to blame for second gear crunches..... have a talk to Award Diffs or PPG direct as they can probably give you the fix for it.

I am still undecided though..... the box ixnt out so there is plenty of time to decide

Given the car still retains its full interior and runs on PULP i would be very very happy with 9's Paul :)

At the end of the day i think the righ option is the straight cut PPG dog box, but i dont think i can live with the noise..... they are so damned loud!!!!

i used my PPG for the drangs on my super built engine with a autronic SM4. but that damn thng is too hard to drive on the street. i drove the car once with the full race setup to work and back. on the way to there it was hell, with flat 10k changes but on the way back i hit traffic on the highway, nearly bored myself to death. once home i got to removing the box and putting my OS gearbox with my 450 kw engine back in, cuz the car is bloody bad to drive with that thing in on the street, it is a monster on the track though

Well, I love my helical gear set in my GTR. I have no problem driving it fast or slow, you just need to learn HOW TO DRIVE!!! Hell my girlfriend can drive it around town without banging and crashing the gearset. I do however love the solid thump when it goes into 1st. he he he. My GTR runs mid 10's in street trim, 400rwkw with T517's and an R3C.

Well I waited 6 weeks to drive my car while I waited for my PPG Helical dog gearset....and I lasted two hours before accidently shifting from 2nd to 1st instead of third. Blew a diff

It took about an hour before I wasn't crunching gears, and I didn't use the clutch on a power run from 1st to 4th and it was like a motorbike. It's unreal!

Just be careful that you don't go back into third, because unlike a syncro box, nothing really stops it from going in!

SPEWING!!!

Does anyone have a GTS-4 crown and pinion for sale 4.375??? Help a brother out!

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
