Actually, JagR33 still owes me a case of beer for my 1:52 at PI and Snowy a keg when i did a 1:25 at Sandown my first time out :D

I already gave you the keg! Well I had a keg and we couldn't tap it so I swapped it with 5 slabs of beer and brought them up to Shep for you! It filled 3 fridges!

Oh, here i was thinking Adz was being generous with all that free beer he gave me.

A serious question Snowplough. If you had of kept your car with std turbos, just with brake upgrade and your fancy suspension...what do you think your best time at Sandown would have been...assuming you got 6-10 track days at Sandown with the same car under you?

Im guessing you would have got 1:20s and probably 1:47s at PI...sound about right, too fast , too slow????? Im just curious to know how much time you make up with more power. Im thinking its not as much as i/everyone first thought .

geez, any new south welshman could have tapped that keg with only a cocktail umbrella, a matchstick and two rubber bands to use as tools. ya blouse wearing pansies!

Well if we look at PI - in that first year we did a bunch of days down there in a row and with pretty much the standard car (stock turbs, engine, brakes and crappy suspension) I got down to 1.49.3. Now I'm obviously a much better driver now than I was then but how much faster I could go now in that same car I don't know as I was fairly crazy to get those times. And I still don't know of anyone else that has gone sub 1.50 with a car as standard as mine was so I think 47's with that car is asking a bit much. Even Panozza could only get a 1.50 out of his car with the standard set-up. But with the brakes I have now and the suspension I have now I'd think a high 1.47 could be achievable with a stock motor and a few laps because the car has so much more grip than it did back then.

But Sandown is harder to answer as I've never been as good there as I have at Phillip Island. But I think Kennedy did a 1.22 there in a damn stock GT-R (stock engine, turbo's, brakes and suspension). And Scotsman did a 1.22 with a few more suspension bits. So I reckon 1.21's is about where the limit is.

So I reckon 1.21's is about where the limit is.

So even with your tweaked suspension setup and brakes you dont think you could get into the 1:20s with the std turbos and 260-270rwkws odd?

I ask because i am curious to know whether an extra 80-90rwkws odd is good for a 1 second, 2 secinds, 3???? Getting back to the big track times thread, its interesting to see what mods give what sort of lap gain.

I reckon our cars in their current guise are good for a 1.17. So since I reckon that HP difference is good for about 1.5s down each of the straights and another 1s in total between turns 1-2 and 9-11, that makes a time of 1.21 about right.

So ball park...80-90rwkws is worth about 3-4 seconds? Cool, thanks!

I was sittin gback and thinking well if a car runs the qtr mile a second quicker with more power then that has to be worth over 2 seconds at Sandown, especially since you don thave to worry abotu the troublesome wheelspin off the line under 60km/h.

Who cares which is "better"

get your arse out there and have a blast around the track.

slow (me) or fast (roy) it doesn't matter but you get to open the car up.

stick to the RB20 and do a bunch of track days.

nedi - there are quick an reliable RB20s.

And for the sake of an argument, i dont know of a single lightly modified GTR that is quicker then my car! Those that are quicker have far more mods then my car. The drivers more track experience, and mods that are wirth well in excess of my car.

Mine was!! - 248rwkw stock GTR with stock turbo's (0.95bar), slotted std disks, RE55's, Tein Flex with Eibac springs and whiteline bushes.

Surely about the same $$ you spent on mods?? No? But faster.....

Don't underestimate a stock GTR for reliability and decent speed. I hammered mine as hard as I could for a good 3 years before I decided I would change the turbo's in case they failed (Not because they failed), and then I had a tuning issue that caused ping and ultimatly a hairline crack in a piston. But stock GTR's can be relaible track cars, as long as you keep the oil and water temps low and look after them and don't do stupid mods or visit stupid workshops.

Basically I agree with everything else you have said thou. For this guy my advise would be get out there and have some fun in you RB20, maybe even do a few sensible mods. But don't waste money. If it does start to get boring and you want to pump some decent coin into a car and get your lap times right down, then go buy a GTR. But be warned, Track GTR = Money pit.

I got 1:21.1 @ Sandown, 1:35.5 @ Winton and 1:50.1 at PI with the stock engine and car as above.

I'm finding that the power I have now hasn't made as big a difference to my lap times as I would have hoped. But it took a good 4-5 track days to get those times down originally in stock GTR and feel 110% comfortable with the car as soon as I stepped in, so with a few more under my belt I feel I will be able to go close to the limit again with the extra power. So yes agree again.

GTR FTW.

I'd also like to add that the most important mod on an RB20 seems to be an external gate, because at least then you can sound like the fastest car in the field. This is the first place to spent your money...

LoL. we havent establised whether its faster yet :) I am gunning for your times at Sandown and PI. I doubt i will get out of the 1:36s at Winton, but i hope to beat your Sandown and PI times. Im actually more confident of beating your PI time then i am of your Sandown time. I just need to do more then 1-2 track days a year which has been my recent form :(

Your cars times are teh target GTR times, once i get a few more laps under my belt it will be interesting to see. :D And nto to forget that your GTR is an R33 V-Spec so a far sharper tool then an R32 GTR...so im chasing. :)

And not having a go...but how many laps did you do in the 1:21s at Sandown????

WHATS PI?

whens the next track outing? can i come watch? full on noobie here aswell

my car is stripped almost completely atm, so returning it to how it was ant getting out there standard, isnt an option

so i might come watch if i can hey

then once my cars ready, get one of the skilled drivers to give me a lap in my car

again what is this PI lol

PI = Phillip Island

Go for a passenger lap in Troy's car and see what you think would be my advice.

I've contemplated going the GT-R route many times, but ultimately I'm glad I never did. I like having to chase the GT-R's down. I'm a long way off most of them at the moment, but I hope to change that soon, and I feel our cars can put in a good effort against these big bad GT-R's... and either way we'll have a hell of a lot of fun trying!

The next SAU day is in October and spectators are always welcome :

14 Sun - SAU Vic Track Club Championship - Round 8 - Calder

Yeah I was never happy with my Phillip Island times. I could never fully trust the rear suspension setup into turn one at high speed, it was what always stopped me getting into the 1:49 that snowy got in his GTR when stock. So I think it's the most achievable. I would have liked another PI day with the previous setup. I wasn't going to change it until I did a 1:49, but Snowy's curse changed all that.

Personally i'll be surprised if you can beat my Sandown time and I'm prepared to lay the slab on the line if you can get it, because only god and I know how hard we had to work to get that time. I honestly can't remember how many laps I did in the 1:21's, but it was a good day and I think there was more than one. After checking the SAU Championship it was actually a 1:21.3 that you need to beat. Plus the previous Maseratti Sandown day I did a 1:21.5, so it wasn't a fluke.

How did this turn into a lap times thread?

Make sure you do... Come down early. Introduce yourself to the guys around and have a chat, watch how it all works.

Also none of us are skilled drivers - we are all hacks. Especially Roy.

How did this turn into a lap times thread?

Because everyone is telling him to buy a GTR...and build cars like JFKs and Markovs for 30k. and go way quicker then a GTSt (lof course it will) :( I was simply saying dont even modify the RB20 that much. Just do a nice turbo upgrade and look after other parts of the car

I will bet money that provided my engine holds together for another 6 months then i will get damn close to those times. Close enough that i think you can confidently say that the bigger variable is the driver, not the car...lol as you said. I am a hack! :)

Hey, at least i dont try and hide the fact..i bathe in my hackness :D

But definetely, get your car back together...with whatever engine you can get in the thing. Just dont go overboard chasing a 400kw monster motor...Come down grab a passenger lap, have a chat and see if its actually for you before spendong too much folding stuff. Not everyone gets the buzz from track work they thought they would...though most do

    • I know why it happened and I’m embarrassed to say but I was testing the polarity of one of the led bulb to see which side was positive with a 12v battery and that’s when it decided to fry hoping I didn’t damage anything else
    • I came here to note that is a zener diode too base on the info there. Based on that, I'd also be suspicious that replacing it, and it's likely to do the same. A lot of use cases will see it used as either voltage protection, or to create a cheap but relatively stable fixed voltage supply. That would mean it has seen more voltage than it should, and has gone into voltage melt down. If there is something else in the circuit dumping out higher than it should voltages, that needs to be found too. It's quite likely they're trying to use the Zener to limit the voltage that is hitting through to the transistor beside it, so what ever goes to the zener is likely a signal, and they're using the transistor in that circuit to amplify it. Especially as it seems they've also got a capacitor across the zener. Looks like there is meant to be something "noisy" to that zener, and what ever it was, had a melt down. Looking at that picture, it also looks like there's some solder joints that really need redoing, and it might be worth having the whole board properly inspected.  Unfortunately, without being able to stick a multimeter on it, and start tracing it all out, I'm pretty much at a loss now to help. I don't even believe I have a climate control board from an R33 around here to pull apart and see if any of the circuit appears similar to give some ideas.
    • Nah - but you won't find anything on dismantling the seats in any such thing anyway.
    • Could be. Could also be that they sit around broken more. To be fair, you almost never see one driving around. I see more R chassis GTRs than the Renault ones.
    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
