While getting my transfer case replaced, my mechanic told me my g-sensor for the ATTESA is stuffed, and costs upwards of $2500. Apparently I shouldn't rely on it to engage the front wheels any time soon.

Has anyone had to deal with replacing this unit? I had to relocate it for the manual conversion, if anyone who's done this conversion has had the same thing happen let me know.

excuse my ignorance but I was under the impression that the front wheels were driven all the time? Split front to rear is 40/60 from what I can remember. Is there anyway of double checking his diagnosis?

$2500 for a sensor is crazy !

Maybe you can bypass the sensor and just run the front wheels all the time?

erm, no you can't. AFAIK, the split varies all the way down tp 5/95

Also the atessa fluid, as well as providing hydraulic pressure, also cools and lubricates the whole system so if the pump is not recieving the correct instructions then you are risking the transfer case internals.

I have an operating g-sensor available Leshy, but how would we go transporting it?

maybe thats why the 4wd light is on....and im missing a front driveshaft lol

from what Dale said, is it because the sensor was stuffed, the Atessa did not supply the oil and that stuffed the T/C internals?

Dale : how big physically is the sensor? are they particularly fragile or something?

Nah, the transfer case was making bad noises well before I got hold of it. The part that failed was the chain that runs the front driveshaft. It was probably flogged before I got to it.

The way the mech explained it is that a faulty G-sensor prevents the front wheels engaging when the rears slip, it doesn't run the ATESSA 100% and burn out the T/C.

Stinky, how much do you want for it? If you wrap it in enough bubble wrap and secure it in a decent box it shouldn't get damaged. I don't know why mine is but there's a little sensor on the side that turns red when it's damaged. sort of like a geiger counter ;)

so its like those G-force sensitive stickers you can put on packages that goes red if it experiences over a certain amount of Gforce? thats pretty cool !

Thats what I was worried about.

I have a good mate in the freight industry, I will have a chat to him about getting it freighted, and if I can get it insured and I will get back to you dude.

What does it look like???? Where does it fit? How can you tell if its stuffed. How do you test it? It could be a big $ maintenance worry.

soz for hijacking this thread. I think i have a smilar problem. Whats that thing rigt underneath at the start of the rear tailshaft? Right after the transmission manual It looks like a wiper motor being wrapped up. And its got a tube running to the rear of the car. Its got a big patch of oil on it. Its not dripping but you can tell when the car its up in the hoist. Is it the ATTESSA?

Its not dripping oil or anything but its just damp. :emme know.

the attessa fluid bottle in the boot has nothing what so ever to do with the oil in the transfer case its totally seperate. The attessa fluid bottle is for the hydraulic actuator pump that is on the rear of the box (as STASIS is talking about above), it just pressures the actuator when the attessa ecu says so. The transfer case has its own oil, its the same type of oil as the attessa bottle but the attessa bottle in no way shows how full the transfer case is.

running no 4wd while the tf case has oil in it will not cause an issue at all as long as the actuator has the air bleed off to release the pressure onto the clutch packs.

Leshy it is pretty unusual for the sensor to be stuffed, it is normally wiring, low voltage or a heap of other issues. was the 4wd light on?

the stagea sensor will match to something else for sure, probably 33 gtr but they may all be the same....maybe get someone to check in the part numbers thread.

just get something sceond hand from a wreck.

i moved mine for the manual conversion too and it is working fine

My 4WD light isn't on, my mech just noticed the g-force sticker on the side was red, meaning it had sustained a large impact or something and it probably wouldn't work all the time.

I haven't noticed any problems with it, I was just trying to work out if it was a common problem and why it would cost up to $2500 for a new one. I think my transfer case killing itself and this g-sensor are separate, yet coincidental issues.

Like Duncan and Leshy have pointed out, the manual conversion requires it to be moved. This is where it is in mine, dunno about the Duncan's, Leshy's or anyone else's.

    • ok so if i wanted to go 18's i would go for 8's  in front 30+ or 32+ off set at front and the back 9 would be ok? what offset should i aim for.. then can i do some  hunting for wheel rim choices..    If i get this - will this fit all around: Size: 18 x 8.5 +37 - n what tyres size tyre should i get for front n back?  
    • Absolute f*cking nightmare. I had to take breaks constantly, and I was always pissed off when I got home. The line split in Italy on day 2 (we drove from the Netherlands), lol. Driving any narrow European town was... well, sh*t.   Appreciate it man. Here, I'll just drop a favourite from the load I took on Saturday.   I'll update here when things happen with the car, the thing is, with stock power and almost everything chassis-wise taken care of, there really are no problems. 268,000kms now and counting.  
    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
    • Hey mate,  I have a set, one is slightly damaged but wont be noticable once installed.  Shoot me a message if your still after them 
    • I couldn't wait But, the black constant tension hose clamps were too thick and there wasn't enough clearance at the T/B and I couldn't get it to seat properly, so I had use a silver one there I also added some 3" silicone over the alloy bit that goes through to hole on the radiator support as it looked like it was sitting on the edge of the hole in the radiator support, I never noticed a rattle or anything, but there was a witness mark It is basicly done, and I can live with the silver hose clamp at the T/B, I will get a black clamp for the head vent though where it is attached to the bulkhead fitting  It never stops...LOL, only issue now with the shock tower brace is it slightly touches the under bonnet liner now, if I leave it it will either wear some paint off the brace where it touches, or damage the liner, so I removed the liner to see what I have to work with, with the liner removed I have about 20mm of clearance, but sadly the middle part of the underside of the bonnet is only dusted with paint and looks crap, so I cannot have that, but.... as I have a roll of Carbuilders premium under bonnet insulation in the garage laying around that is only 5.5mm thick (we were going to use it on the boys Patrol, but he crashed the front of it a few months and it was written off, hence why he now drives my old Honda Accord Euro), I'll use the OEM liner as a template and get the Carbuilders stuff fitted up to cover that dusted paint up
