Your stuffed, you'll loose your license for 6 months as you broke the probation, or is it 12 months?

One or the other either way.

R33 GTS-t's were illegal to drive since BEFORE July 1. Regardless of when you got your license.

There was just no real penalty (minor fine, no demerits).

Where now there is a reasonable fine, 3 Demerits... coupled with 5-points in 12 months for P-Platers, driving a car illegally actually isnt viable anymore, nor worth the risk.

In all honesty, this has been covered in that much detail on this website, and by the Gov't. If you didnt know the law then its really a case of tough titties

Look at the bright side, time to purchase a bicycle and get fit for summer.

And if your still 1-2years from full license, sell the car too

As Ash (R31Nismoid) has stated; The "power to weight" law has been around for 15yrs, just wasn't really enforced due to the laughable penalties, now they have corrected that. A quick search of the VIC forum will find threads explaining these rules and also links to the VICroads website.

Save your money as the judge will not change a thing. Don't listen to mates, as they will say what you want to hear, especially when they don't have a clue

Wow the laws been in place for a while now and you're the first person that I've heard of that's been caught. Did you get the $1100 fine by any chance? Or was that after you got caught a couple of times.

Dunno about "reasonable law"... maybe the huge fine is reasonable.. the points aren't.. 3 points is BS, especially if, like me it's hard to find realistic power and weight figures and your car isn't on the list.. I'm not risking it.. 3 weeks till i can drive it and the gtr ._.

It does not need to be on "the list". The law clearly states the P-to-W calculations.

And certainly a GTR is over-powered.

You go by the factory power/weight specifications of the factory vehicle.

Its really not hard to work out power-to-weight ratio's.

Personally i think its good, as i drove over-powered cars on my P's because the laws were a joke.

And realistically i shouldn't have been driving it.

Now the laws are tougher, i wouldnt even think about temping it when i could loose my license in a blink of an eye for it

friend at work got caught....3 points and around $230 fine i think

i heard that the weight they (cops) use in calculating p2w was the unladen weight of the car - ie the car w/o any fuel, oil and other consumables. is this different to the factory quoted specs and if so does any one know where to find them?

Oh sorry, wasn't talking about my GTR, forgot i removed my avatar

my valiant has the standard 318, 5.2 litre fireball and the tare on the sticker is like 1250 whereas actual weight is more like 1450 (my gtr has 1250 on it too.. i wish^^) and i have seen power figures for the val stating from 220-260hp (even workshop manuals list differently)so it sucks! am too scared to take chances now with this ghey 3 demerit points law.. gogogo nov 5th

i don't care if this was a 'high powered car' or not, but these laws are designed to protect young, stupid drivers. I was one, once.

you get caught, too bad. it may prevent this:

as you can see the cops dont use any magical weight calcs its all here... and yes it is unladen weight

that took around 38 seconds to find from the VIC Roads site

what if you play dumb and tell em you didn't know?

they can't expect EVERYONE to be aware of these laws just coz they drive a r33

Playing dumb wont work.

R33's have been illegal to drive since the P-to-W laws were brought in. They have been around as long as ive been driving.

So they have at least been around since the 1990's.

The onus is on the driver/owner to ensure the car is legal to drive for their license grade, and in a roadworthy state at all times.

Looks like they work their way up with the fines. $230 at first, but then if you don't listen they'll eventually make it $1100.

As much as I hate these laws, I accept it. They're here to protect us.

The onus is on the driver to know what they can and can't drive. Everyone knows that P Platers have some sort of restriction, it is even written on the back of every rego label I have had! If that isnt enough to spur people into researching what car they can drive on their P's, I don't know what is.

guys i knew bout that website and i am aware of the laws.

what i wanted to know was what exactly is that magic number of the unladen weight? there are a huge number of sources from which to choose. unfortunatelynot all of these sources agree. the difference in the quoted figures may mean the difference between a car being seen to be illegal or not.

also who's to say that the figures that the govt use come from the same source as one we might use? and who can argue that their values are accurate? i mean look at rego stickers. i just rekon it'd be a hell of a lot easier if the police and vicroads were 1) in agreement bout the implementation and interpretation of the laws and 2) if the same limits, guidelines or figures they use were defined and availabe to the public.

imo it'd lead to better acceptance of the restrictions. cos right now, while i agree that there is a benefit in the law, it seems vicpol especially are keeping us in the dark as another avenue of revenue raising. i know thats prolly not the case but its the impression i get.

If you reckon they are wrong, take them to court.

You'll soon find out whos facts are better than the others.

As manufacturer spec is what the weight goes by, and that comes from Nissan. There is really no ambiguity there

    • Bit of an update to this one. Having some issues on the dyno that held us back (boost spiking) and I want to pass some info over you guys and see what you think is wrong with my setup. The current readout on this dyno is 462rwkw on a low reading dyno so keep in mind it is a real world 500rwkw setup on a hub dyno. Don't read into the power figure too much as a sign of the issue. The short and curly of it is: 2.8 Litre Racepace build RB25 NEO N/A Head with VCT (internally standard however ) Borgwarner EFR 8474  Turbosmart 50mm Straight Gate + Mac valve 6Boost Manifold 4" dump to full 4" exhaust (nil restrictions) Wastegate plumbed back in and all angles in the exhaust system are acceptable and not too sharp. GFB SV52 BOV in cooler piping  Turbosmart BOV in EFR Housing   The issue we are having is it comes onto full boost for example at 4000rpm and spikes to 24/25psi, before dropping down to 17psi before slowly rising back up to the target boost of 23psi. It was extremely uncontrollable and the tuner actually had to ramp in boost progrssively with each 1000rpm on each boost setting we selected to try and reduce the amount of spiking. Sometimes we would see a drop of 10psi from the peak at the beginning of the run, to the low, until it took the next 500-1000rpm to stabilise back up to the target boost. The tuner is pretty confident that the straight gate is just a poorly designed product and leaks too much boost upon cracking the gate open and theres no way to fix it other than going to a poppet valve. He's also confient theres no ignition breakdown or floating valves. The fueling is extremely stable as well. Turbo speed is somewhere around the 109,000rpm area. The spanner in the works for me is that prior to this Borgwarner and StraightGate, the car was tuned on -5 twins at a diferent tuner, and he also had issues controlling the boost with it spiking around the same rpm range, so to me this sounds like the same issue and it can't be anything on the turbo side as this was all changed and I think the behaviour is extremely similar, if not the same. We also removed the mac valve and did a run on wastegate pressure and it still spiked and had the same behaviour. My thoughts on possibilities are: Boost Leak VCT Cam Gear isn't reliably activating consistently - (On this however, we did a run with the VCT disabled and the boost still spiked) Turbosmart BOV is not handling the boost? However this seems unlikely to not be able to handle 20psi. I have a couple of logs that I can't make sense of if anybody knows how to read them and can obtain further logs of other parameters if they are not enough, happy to pay for anyones time. The dyno readout with the power figure is the most recent last week. The other picture is from two weeks prior to that where we couldn't break 400kw (we removed the cat), however the issue of the boost control persisted. @Lithium @Piggaz @burn4005 @GTSBoy @discopotato03 I've tagged those that were quite active in recent pages here, no disrespect to those that know turbos well but I missed tagging. • I recently purchased a 2018 Infiniti Q60, which has an SD card navigation map. I can see my system has options for real time traffic updates etc, and am wondering if there is something I can purchase to get this working? I can see there are at least updated maps for USA and Canada, but nothing for Australia. Surely Infiniti took changing road systems and city expansions into account when they decided to use an inbuilt navigation over Android Auto/Apple Car Play, or are we doomed to drive on streets that don't exist in the navigation system if you drive to a new area?
    • Luckily I didn't put in etch primer as I just found out it's not compatible with my body filler lol. Also just need to sand the panel anywhere between 150-400 grit so I'm in the clear there. It does say to not apply to soft old paint, I assume that means paint that is flaking, peeling, etc
    • @dbm7 and @GTSBoy thank you both very much! will give that a shot!
