i have a after market turbo but cop didnt say anything about it, he only picked on air pod and exshaut, if I get a small 4inch to 2inch steel made and fit it in with the stock pipe with stock air box put the stock exshuast back on, you guys think EPA will pass me?? becuase the way the turbo is sitting it looks stock. can anyone give me some feedback on the setup?

thanks guys

If the emmission system isnt effeccted, then it will pass, using a bigger turbo in theory shouldnt change that, as long as the standard ecu, AFM and cat are used then it should pass the drive cycle, what other mods have you got done?

lol i have PFC, Z32m 740cc injectors, can this be tuned to pass EPA?

Yes it can, not a 5 minute job though, do a search someone has done it(i think it was Guilt Toy), maybe you can get some pointers on ignition timing and AFR's to run to pass. Also need to have all emissions gear fitted, charcoal canister, recirc BOV, PCV, breather hooked back into intake.

Do you definately have to take it to the epa or just get a rwc on it?

Most of the time it will just be an unroadworthy sticker and you just have to get a rwc, also if it was picked for noise then i dont think you need to take it to epa either, just need you local exhaust shop to do a decible test, once you have passed take the rwc and exhaust test to vic roads.

mate good luck gettin ur car passed by the epa. i had 2 deal wif them at the start of the year and they r not willing to compromise on much. i went there 4 aexhaust decible test and then they made me go for an emmisions test becoz they did not believe me about the mods 2 the car, my engine looked totaly standard but still made me go for the test. i had to retune my car to standard specs and try to coneal all mods. make sure your cat is in absolute perfect condition or it will not pass. if u want your car 2 pass 100% go get your car retuned by unigroup engineering they did an amazing job on my car and passed with flying colours

depends who you get really. I passed epa with an chipped ecu and a after market turbo. The guy said that my emissions were a little high, and passed me anyways

i think ill go back to stock and keep it that way. i hate EPA why they have to be like this why cant they just let us car freaks alone? EPA ;)

I guess the key here is that a car modified to the letter of the law, can pass emissions and make heaps of power, a 300rwkw tree hugger isnt out of the question.

i know but the thing here is in vic we cant have more then 1 mod to the engine if you like it or not, EPA doesn't care.

Errr before Ash says it have a look in the EPA sticky thread or do a search as this has been covered many times before.

ANY mod that affects emissions such as those listed above WILL NOT PASS a full epa inspection in vic....that means stock ecu, stock injectors etc etc is needed. If the turbo is a high flowed stockie or an N1 item then you will pass....anything else will fail.

The PFC will cause you to fail straight away, all they have to do is check the consult port, HOWEVER call Sam Cornell (aka Dr Drift) as he can now remap the r33 ECU to pass epa now I think. He mentioned something along the lines of this to me when I was last in there as I run a PFC and similar mods aswell.

Like ANT said tho, if the turbo is visibly an aftermarket item you are gone, if its just a highflow, I say airbox, GOOD (and I must stress this) cat and stocky system and then go see sam.

Ps hard luck, gotta hate that crap

i went down to pro tech my tuner he said will have to put everything back to stock if its a full EPA test so, im hoping when i get the notice its only a exhust test and it will be sweet, becuase when the cop took a pic it was only a pic of the bov which was plumbed back so i think EPA will let it go hopfully, ill let everyone know how i go :D dam EPA at the end of the day everyone is just doing the job.

why would the PFC cause you to fail instantly? im fairly certain having aftermarket engine managment is not a breach of an EPA guideline, and also having an aftermarket turbo doesnt mean "your gone"... i think your getting just a little too worked up... :D

when you go to the EPA place, they pop your bonnet to check PCV (possivite crankcase ventilation) hoses, then stick a probe up the ass to check emmisions, im pretty sure its done on idle, acceleration and deccel, its not that hard to past as your car isnt under anyload (its free reving) so it shouldnt be pissing that much fuel in anyway... then they take it 20m up too a open area and do a noise test, now they test your car at 3/4 of peak power (so for a skyline i could imagine about 4500RPM) and they also test for decelleration noise output aswell, so any burble or backfire will get caught out...

to pass, put a standard exhaust on, and a standard air box with standard filter, make sure the PCV is connected and turn the boost down and have sum1 tune the PFC to suit...

n if u are really keen, heat wrape ur cat, with some off the shelf heat wrap stuff from ur local auto store (raising the temp of the cat, burns off more nasties but shortens the life of it)

EPA is not that hard, just a bit of a headache, dont go forkin out all this cash to go back 2 standard etc, im pretty sure if u fail u jus have 2 get retested... but you only have a month before your rego is suspended, but the EPA's number will be on the forms you recieved in the mail, give them a call....

skiwhine...please leave giving advise to those who know what they are talking about. A PFC will cause you to fail instantly because the letter of the law states that your ecu must not be adjustable (like the PFC is with a handcontroller). And yes having ANY aftermarket turbo does mean you are gone due to the fact that it changes the emissions of your car.

I will re-iterate that here in victoria the EPA will fail a car that isn't stock in regard to intake and exhaust....the basic rule of thumb is anything that affects emissions will cause your car to fail.

i dont think u know what you are talking about, keep your 'rules of thumbs' to the thumbs n concenrate on the 'laws of emissions'

*i passed in December last year, with far from stock bright shiney blue Pacemaker extractors...

*and i had a nice lumpy camshaft (this was in a EFI V8) which was very audible....

*and bigger injectors which are clearly visable.....

did they care? NO!

did it pass? YES.... why?!... because it passed emmisions and noise tests

how does having a bigger turbo effect emmisions? and aslong as the A/F ratios are correct and your car isnt spitting stupid amounts of petrol out the ass it doesnt matter!

and furthermore almost all cars ECU's are adjustable standard...

after market ECUs, turbos, bigger injectors and blah blah blah are all ILLEGAL as they can/will change emissions from the factory settings.

sure some people might get lucky and pass with these mods every now and then, but it dont mean they are legal.

there is however an emissions test (i think) you can have done for a few grand and if pass it you are able to run the above said mods, but dont take my word for it...

*sigh*.... some people jus dont get it... when you go have an EPA test at McCloud, they do an EMMISIONS TEST there and then! they messsure the carbon monoxide (correct me if im wrong on the what they test for) levels in parts per million (PPM) and deem if it passes or not....

now to go a bit further in detials for those who are extra thick:

lets say purely for arguments sake that a standard RB25DET running on 7 pounds produces 100PPM carbon monoxide standard on a stock standard shit fuel ready 16:1 AFR map.

now that safe level u have to stay under is 100PPM, if u have a bigger turbo, bigger injectors, plenium even more boost as long as u stay under the 100ppm ur safe, now the way to do this is to have your car custom tuned, when cars are tuned they make more power and use less petrol because they run better AFR's (and a few other things; spark timing etc), instead of running a 16:1 shit fuel ready bomb tune, they will adjust so u run something a bit closer to 14.7:1 which is the optimum level... now since you now run a leaner AFR the amount of carbon u spit out the exhaust will be less, hence how people with half a brain pass modified cars....

    • Don't even try to run it on the stock ECU if you're going to have the boost controller bring boost above ~10 psi. I've already told you that. If you use the Nistune ECU, you will need to CAREFULLY read the available documentation for Neo tuning, and read some threads on the Nistune forums, to discover the various things you have to do to prevent the ECU from going bananas when the boost is too high. The is a table associated with th boost sensor that must be modified to prevent it from shitting the bed. This is just one of the things that you will need to do to the tune in Nistune, because the Neo turbo ECU will be expecting to see a number of things (such as the TCS) that are not there, and you have to block the DTCs on those. It is totally not surprising to me that you are having the problems that you are, but the solutions to these problems have been known for >15 years. So just get it done.
    • Hi. Sry iam not a mechanic and iam not at the car atm so i dont know 100% but they told they measure those and even try to change those. AFM they have two. Coils are new a they have my old one too. Plugs too. ECU...we have 25 NEO stock and Nistune 25 NEO.   But i dont know if any one those could be the problem and why/if/what can cause this, Only thing they did not check is fuel...but that walbro 255 is new(like 1,5 years)... That fuel pressure gauge idk...but i let them know Any suggestions?   EDIT: how can they know if it is like you say he ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high? Tha car has boost controler
    • Can you clarify what you mean by boost cut, do you mean it misfires both when under load (driving) and when stationary and out of gear? Or does the ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high (boost control issue)? Does it occur at idle with no throttle? When you say "the ECU is OK", what ECU is it and why do you think it is OK? Have you used the NEO ECU, and if so do you have a MAP sensor attached? Same for the AFM, why do you think it is OK? Do you have any way to put a fuel pressure gauge on it (even just a mechanical one between the fuel filter and fuel rail)?
    • Hi.. Just another problem. So maybe you can help. I(my mechanic) done swap from my RB20DE NEO to RB25DET NEO. Everything is OK but we have a boost cut. Coils/Plugs are ok...AFM is ok. ECU is ok. I have Walbro 255 but it "changed" sound few months ago(you can hear it ouside) you did not hear that when it was new(maybe faulty?) Sooo...what now? What can cause this boost cut? It is even when you standing still...
