Hi Guys

With all the thefts going on, and the attempted theft of mine on monday, im really interested to know what GPS security methods are out there and available? what do people use or have experience with?

So far i have found

Quiktrak appears to be a complete alarm GPS tracking and monitoring solution. Where as ezitrak is a self monitoring/managing GPS solution.

Are there others out there?

I already have a farely good alarm system installed by a reputable person from this forum. His recommendation of components and install has saved my car once, maybe another time im not sure of. But i want more. Im happy with my current alarm system but ideally would like to add GPS on top of it, and preferably monitoring aswell since i am very often away from my car.

So, what else is out there? What have peopled tried? what do you recommend?

Some people I know through my work have had dramas with theirs outside the sydney area - i.e. over blue mountains wouldnt work

Used to work for Quiktrak, system is good, however overpriced and monitoring is good. Limited range due to it being radio tracking as opposed to GPS tracking. QT will work inside buildings unlike GPS but leave sydney and where there are no towers there is no position or comms. I work for Minor Planet now and they don't offer a security solution as such.

Just install a tazer in the drivers seat hooked up to the siren, make no mistakes though, or roasted nuts will be on the menu!

How much do they charge these days?

I was made redundant by them years ago and then they dissapeared down here in Vic. It used to be about $1250 in NSW and around $800 in Vic plus monitoring after the first year.

Yeah the quciktracks are expensive but good within metro area. I had one in my old gtst and have one in the 350z now. THey went broke a couple of years back but are back in business now. Monitoring was a couple of hundred a year plus about $30 if they call out a security guard to check

I don't know much about easitrak

There are also GSM based self monitoring alarms which is what I went with most recently. Basically there is a sim card in the alarm you can lock, unlock and get position of car via your phone, and it sends sms if someone tries to break in. I like this because there is no annual monitoring (I paid about $20 for a virgin sim from memory) and gsm coverage is excellent across the country since we spend time at race meets out of sydney metro.

I've used NRMA carcom for the past 4 years; I have no website link but they're mentioned

on this NRMA insurance page:

It works over GSM so everywhere a mobile works rather than only working in the city.

The gadget itself they're selling for about $1.9k, monitoring is about $350 annually;

they do everything by SMS (voice comms to people in-car, too). One of the funniest

things I saw was a mate's wife hopped in the car, set off the silent alarm, a few seconds later:

"This is blahblah from NRMA carcom, we have received an unauthorised entry alert from this vehicle, identify yourself please"

[wife] "..."

[more forcefully] "I repeat, this is NRMA carcom, we have an unauthorised entry alert on this vehicle, identify yourself please"

[wife, to my mate] "Um, I think the car's talking to me"

[deadpan] "Yes. I am"

[hurriedly exits the car]

They're pretty good at doing what they do; about the only gripe I have is that there's no automatic periodic checkin

with the base station (like an "I'm OK" SMS) so if the unit fails they won't know. The unit in my old WRX failed and

we didn't know for 3 weeks; now we test them every week

There are gadgets that you can get to do it yourself for a couple of hundred bucks as Duncan

mentioned... but I don't know whether they're standards-compliant and/or approved by

insurers. I'd check with your insurer - you don't want to void your insurance by fitting a

security device

Noooo just found more damage!! they wedged somethng through the seal for the door handle enclosure, destroyed the seal damaged the body and paint all pealing. SCUM!

http://www.ezitrak.com.au/, I found this unit to be the best around and you can momitor it yourself so no annual fee plus you can kill the engine anythime rather than them calling cops follwing the car and then cut the engine when they think its safe . Sure it won't work underground but it will give you the last "known" location ( when it went of satelite sight). Will work anywhere on the plannet however it won't call you if there is no GSM cover but as soon as it goes in GSM cover area you will get a call.

Running cost is the cost of a SIM card, you can get a pre-paid or a low fee card like $9 per month .

QT only works in merto areas, uses a lot more power so if you don't drive the car for a week or so battery will go flat, its a much bigger unit ( harder to hide in the car) and needs a better aerial.

Sydney driver Michael Simotas was charged with speeding by police officers using a handheld radar, allegedly doing 85 km/hr in a 60 km/hr zone.

But Michael had a secret weapon in his car – an EziTrak® GPS Security and Tracking System. About a grand, i think (from memory) it works out to $4 per day the first year, then $1 per day every year after - but yeah dont quote me

quick track is really good, u can find ur car as long as they dnt know u have one, cause if they do, they park it in a car park with no reception...

ive also heard of a mate who has quicktrack, and they called him 10minutes after the alarm went off like wtf

neways it works out like 1 dollar a day, but quick track always upgrading, they have like 7 models now.

well actually quick track has OK undercover reception, I used to park in an underground carpark a far bit (had a car stolen from there a few years bacK) and the quicktrack was able to send alarm while parked. It was only a couple of floors down and I'm sure there would be a limit to how far down it works.

Undercover is a problem for the GPS based ones though because they require line of sight.
