give him time... I mean, its not everyday you see F1 drivers flipping others the bird on a track

Back in the day, before the bird was invented the universal signal for "up yours" was infact something that looked pretty similar to a thumbs up signal. Last time I was it used was by Jim Richards at Bathurst.

and who's to say schuey didn't just stuff up and stall his car there? I think he was judged on past actions.

He's a victim of his own success...'Too good to make a mistake'

bet you don't remember anything else about that monaco race.

even IF it was deliberate, professional fouls occur in every other sport. I don't really see the difference, except with how much media hype surrounded that incident. professional sportsmen take every competitive advantage they can, and always try to stretch the envelope of the rules or what is considered acceptable. that was certainly the culture at Ferrari - you don't dominate the best part of a decade in F1 without stepping on a few toes. perhaps if <<insert your favourite driver here>> had been up the pointy end for half as long as Michael, they'd have had a momentary brain fade here or there along the way also.

strange perspective though - deliberately causing a crash at racing speed is not as bad??? maybe Schumacher should have slowed and waited for the potentially faster qualifying car and just ploughed into him deliberately and to hell with the consequences - then you wouldn't mind it so much eh? personally, I reckon you'd be screaming "attempted murder" along with the world's press. the power of a surname. or the way the media casts you...

Not to mention that the oh so innocent McLaren drivers were no more than 3 weeks ago handed 5 position penalties for holding up cars in qualifying...So they didn't stop on the track...So they escape the flaming because they were slightly more creative?

The other escapes me

Might not be the 1 you're trying to remember, but Hamilton signalling to Fisi in what is pretty much 'what the f**k' in most wog hand speech, when racing for position, made me sick.

well have a look at the footage again

when you look at the 'speed' involved, and how he's steering the car; there really couldn't be any doubt that he meant to do it

I never understood that incident, why did he slow down and steered like? It's not like you can escape the consequences because everything is recorded. It was the strangest incident I've ever seen.

Just for those that blamed Alonso...

Front wing failure likely cause of Hamilton-Alonso crash

McLaren have confirmed that Lewis Hamilton’s front wing broke immediately prior to his running into the rear of Fernando Alonso’s Renault on lap two of Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix.

The unusual nature of the accident - both drivers were accelerating on a straight section of track - prompted cynics to question whether Alonso had ‘brake tested’ his former team mate. Renault’s telemetry suggested otherwise, and McLaren say they have no suspicion of any wrongdoing on the part of the Spaniard.

“When I went into the engineers’ room and started looking at the details that I realised Lewis’s upper front wing had disappeared about two seconds before the accident, so he suddenly lost downforce,” explained McLaren’s Formula One CEO, Martin Whitmarsh.

“We haven’t analysed why that happened but we suspect the structure had been weakened by previous contact. To be fair to Lewis it could have broken of its own accord, but that has never happened before so contact is the most likely cause. There’s certainly no evidence that Fernando did anything wrong.”

Such a failure would have robbed Hamilton’s car of not only downforce, but also drag, giving it an unexpected burst of acceleration, explaining the unlikely impact.

He was on fire when i met him and loving it. he was different then. Then as soon as Lewis arrived he started showing the world how immature he is and how good he is at chucking his toys out of the pram and getting absolutely slammed by a rookie.

Ive lost a lot of respect for the young guy and i dont rate him as highly as i did a couple of years back.

Well talking to a McLaren mechanic in Melbourne, Alonso was liked by his mechanics, and Alonso was only guilty of letting some things be heard outside the team. Lewis is loved by the team, but was not innocent. At the end of the day Alonso is gone and i have it on good authority that Lewis was no more innocent then Alonso, only Alonso lost out in the eyes of the media.....I didnt get any insight on why that was the case but one could hazard a guess and say that so much F1 media is British, and secondly that he was the golden rookie...but was clever enough to cry foul publically but behind close doors conduct business in a different manner.

Re todays press release, McLaren are doing a good job of protecting their drivers. Perhaps Flavio needs to take a leaf out of their book. Every time there is a problem its a team letting the driver down.

It's bullshit.

I've watched the accident numerous times and Hamilton got a run on Alonso out of turn 1, Alonso took the inside line into turn 2 to cover where as Hamilton kept out wide keeping a higher speed and then simply had too much speed on the exit of 3 (before they were even driving in a straight line).

If Hamilton's wing was damaged/broken he would have run wide on that corner due to lack of downforce and hit Alonso's left rear not tried to go up the inside of him (right side).

anyone have footage of the wing breaking 2 seconds prior?

sounds like spin to calm things down.

Re Lewis farking up by trying to start the race in the wrong mode...

He has admitted that he forgot to push the correct button…?

"Yes, but as a team Vodafone McLaren Mercedes doesn’t habitually blame its drivers in public. Is the procedure clear? Is it simple enough? We have to look at all the details."

LOL, the story of the front spoiler? I suppose they could see the stroke of the front shock change indicating loss of downforce on the front...but i suspect its another example of the team protecting the driver. Just like it was the teams fault not to call Lewis in when at China he had fark all grip, they could see the tyre was farked....no doubt Lewis said the car was still drivable, wait to see what the weather was doing...and oops! Fark Up! But the team wore that mistake ! :)

Wow, thats the first time ive seen it from that angle and i have no doubt he sawed at the wheel twice even though he was clear of the corner.

Im of the definite opinion it was deliberate. He induced a touch of over steer, made slight correction which you can see from the slight puff of smoke from the tyres but over compensated which put him clear of the corner so then he had to change his line through the corner and straightened up there by appearing to have run out of road.

It was an amateurish cheating attempt. If he got it right on the first turn of the wheel it would have been impossible to tell but in actual fact he screwed up...

And was penalized for it.

Oh well...he still has 7 championships under his belt and i think ill be in the grave before that ever happens again!

And here come the critics .... http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/headlines/news...409105054.shtml

I agree 1000% that Louises gesturing when he couldnt get past Fisi was uncalled for and a bit childish/bratish.

Be interesting to see that if McLaren continue to struggle and lost their place at the top with Ferrari whether the Alonso fans will come out of the woodwork saying "We told you so" If Lewis can turn it around in the next few GPs and get solid podiums then it will at least show that mentally is tough enough to be around for a whole championship when expectation is high

With regards to signing Alonso for RBR in 2008, the 63-year-old Dietrich Mateschitz is quoted as saying

"His situation was complicated because he was free for one year only,"

Whilst looking for a 2008 drive it seems Alonso had already wrapped up a seat for 2009. Everbody seems to thinks its Ferrari, but personally i can see it being BMW. For a period they were very vocal with their praise for Alonso, but the past 9 months have gone quiet. I think they have bagged him with Heidfled out of a seat in 2009. What is Nick the Bricks contract term?

    • So, that is it! It is a pretty expensive process with the ATF costing 50-100 per 5 litres, and a mechanic will probably charge plenty because they don't want to do it. Still, considering how dirty my fluid was at 120,000klm I think it would be worth doing more like every 80,000 to keep the trans happy, they are very expensive to replace. The job is not that hard if you have the specialist tools so you can save a bit of money and do it yourself!
    • OK, onto filling. So I don't really have any pics, but will describe the process as best I can. The USDM workshop manual also covers it from TM-285 onwards. First, make sure the drain plug (17mm) is snug. Not too tight yet because it is coming off again. Note it does have a copper washer that you could replace or anneal (heat up with a blow torch) to seal nicely. Remove the fill plug, which has an inhex (I think it was 6mm but didn't check). Then, screw in the fill fitting, making sure it has a suitable o-ring (mine came without but I think it is meant to be supplied). It is important that you only screw it in hand tight. I didn't get a good pic of it, but the fill plug leads to a tube about 70mm long inside the transmission. This sets the factory level for fluid in the trans (above the join line for the pan!) and will take about 3l to fill. You then need to connect your fluid pump to the fitting via a hose, and pump in whatever amount of fluid you removed (maybe 3 litres, in my case 7 litres). If you put in more than 3l, it will spill out when you remove the fitting, so do quickly and with a drain pan underneath. Once you have pumped in the required amount of clean ATF, you start the engine and run it for 3 minutes to let the fluid circulate. Don't run it longer and if possible check the fluid temp is under 40oC (Ecutek shows Auto Trans Fluid temp now, or you could use an infrared temp gun on the bottom of the pan). The manual stresses the bit about fluid temperature because it expands when hot an might result in an underfil. So from here, the factory manual says to do the "spill and fill" again, and I did. That is, put an oil pan under the drain plug and undo it with a 17mm spanner, then watch your expensive fluid fall back out again, you should get about 3 litres.  Then, put the drain plug back in, pump 3 litres back in through the fill plug with the fitting and pump, disconnect the fill fitting and replace the fill plug, start the car and run for another 3 minutes (making sure the temp is still under 40oC). The manual then asks for a 3rd "spill and fill" just like above. I also did that and so had put 13l in by now.  This time they want you to keep the engine running and run the transmission through R and D (I hope the wheels are still off the ground!) for a while, and allow the trans temp to get to 40oC, then engine off. Finally, back under the car and undo the fill plug to let the overfill drain out; it will stop running when fluid is at the top of the levelling tube. According to the factory, that is job done! Post that, I reconnected the fill fitting and pumped in an extra 0.5l. AMS says 1.5l overfill is safe, but I started with less to see how it goes, I will add another 1.0 litres later if I'm still not happy with the hot shifts.
    • OK, so regardless of whether you did Step 1 - Spill Step 2 - Trans pan removal Step 3 - TCM removal we are on to the clean and refill. First, have a good look at the oil pan. While you might see dirty oil and some carbony build up (I did), what you don't want to see is any metal particles on the magnets, or sparkles in the oil (thankfully not). Give it all a good clean, particularly the magnets, and put the new gasket on if you have one (or, just cross your fingers) Replacement of the Valve body (if you removed it) is the "reverse of assembly". Thread the electrical socket back up through the trans case, hold the valve body up and put in the bolts you removed, with the correct lengths in the correct locations Torque for the bolts in 8Nm only so I hope you have that torque wrench handy (it feels really loose). Plug the output speed sensor back in and clip the wiring into the 2 clips, replace the spring clip on the TCM socket and plug it back into the car loom. For the pan, the workshop manual states the following order: Again, the torque is 8Nm only.
    • One other thing to mention from my car before we reassemble and refill. Per that earlier diagram,   There should be 2x B length (40mm) and 6x C length (54mm). So I had incorrectly removed one extra bolt, which I assume was 40mm, but even so I have 4x B and 5x C.  Either, the factory made an assembly error (very unlikely), or someone had been in there before me. I vote for the latter because the TCM part number doesn't match my build date, I suspect the TCM was changed under warranty. This indeed led to much unbolting, rebolting, checking, measuring and swearing under the car.... In the end I left out 1x B bolt and put in a 54mm M6 bolt I already had to make sure it was all correct
    • A couple of notes about the TCM. Firstly, it is integrated into the valve body. If you need to replace the TCM for any reason you are following the procedure above The seppos say these fail all the time. I haven't seen or heard of one on here or locally, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. Finally, Ecutek are now offering tuning for the 7 speed TCM. It is basically like ECU tuning in that you have to buy a license for the computer, and then known parameters can be reset. This is all very new and at the moment they are focussing on more aggressive gear holding in sports or sports+ mode, 2 gear launches for drag racing etc. It doesn't seem to affect shift speed like you can on some transmissions. Importantly for me, by having controllable shift points you can now raise the shift point as well as the ECU rev limit, together allowing it to rev a little higher when that is useful. In manual mode, my car shifts up automatically regardless of what I do which is good (because I don't have to worry about it) but bad (because I can't choose to rev a little higher when convenient).  TCMs can only be tuned from late 2016 onwards, and mine is apparently not one of those although the car build date was August 2016 (presumably a batch of ADM cars were done together, so this will probably be the situation for most ADM cars). No idea about JDM cars, and I'm looking into importing a later model valve body I can swap in. This is the top of my TCM A couple of numbers but no part number. Amayama can't find my specific car but it does say the following for Asia-RHD (interestingly, all out of stock....): So it looks like programable TCM are probably post September 2018 for "Asia RHD". When I read my part number out from Ecutek it was 31705-75X6D which did not match Amayama for my build date (Aug-2016)
