I wonder how much size people actually have put on through crossfit training only...

I can see how you would loose fat from it, but I tend to wonder how a ecto would go at actually putting on size...

Guess if their diet was good they probably would but you would probably need to eat even more calories to make up for the amount burnt from an hour in crossfit....

anyone agree or disagree?

1. Many, many different types of exercise and sport will build an amazing bodies.... stop acting amazed that crossfitters have "decent size on them"

2. Time under tension isn't the be all and end all in muscle building and strength gains, if anything, crossfitters lift quite a bit more than your average gym-goer because the quick movements encourage a lot of power to develop through those movements.

3. Even with slower movements there is always the risk of injuries... speeding a movement up doesn't really increase this risk, it's poor conditioning altogether that leads to injuries (no warming up, muscular imbalances, poor recovery habits)

Crossfit isn't my cup of tea in terms of exercising right now, but I'm not going to hate on it until I try it.

Too many on this thread seem to have their heads so far up their bums to wanna try different types of exercise because their bro-science buddies told them a particular type of training is the be-all-end-all. Try being open minded for a change.

What kind of size are you talking about? Anyone can gain "size" from eating a ton of calories but this won't speed up your muscle gains.

This is coming from an ecto btw.

Interesting discussion.

So birds, I gather your some sort of self appointed expert in all things strength?

In 2011 I held my ProRaw rep challenge.

Amy Dracup, who represented Auatralia at the World Crossfit games after winning her regionals, entered my comp.

It was squatting, benching, C&J and Ukrainian Deadlifts (UDL's)

Going againt her was Taylor Young, she has deadlifted 220kg, and my wife Nina, who has 16 WR in powerlifting. Both strong women, and Nina is really fit as well, there were also around 10 guys, same parameters for all.

The Crossfit chick went home with the $2000 cash prize.

Not strong you say. At 52kg she can C&J 72.5kg, yet shes fit enough to win Oceania regionals

Respect......and shes seriously hot

I'm sorry but I don't believe you... unless you post pics... we need pics... you know, for evidence and all... ;)

Been trying to improve my wife's squat, almost up to bodyweight (51kg) but she's not so keen on the heavy PL style stuff... I think that's why girls like crossfit so much, they seem to be more attracted to the endurance aspect than maximal strength, that's a big generalisation though... she's obssesed with learning chin-ups at the moment though, can do 4-5 okay ones (not 'kip' ups)... which is pretty good considering she's built like a bird, with super long, spaghetti thin arms... has a good build for deadlifting though and likes it after I told her it was great for helping build a round ass... but she's a bit scared of going heavy

Why are you putting words in my mouth and making assumptions about me? I didn't say crossfitters are weak. I said I wouldn't recommend it to anyone wanting a lot of muscle/strength. There are better / more efficient ways to go about that IMO. Crossfit is about more than outright strength and muscle building; for most people this is going to create a compromise somewhere, when you could be devoting your time and energy entirely towards the aforementioned.

Birdman got played like a fiddle, not the sweetest ballard I've heard though...

End of the day man you said this:

They make every exercise a cardio workout, to the detriment of good muscle building technique...

Whether you think it's good technique, inefficient or whatever - Crossfit can/does work... and pretty bloody well :)

I think if you doing any form of resistance training you're going to get gains from it in the long term. But tailoring that program to suit your goal is what will yield the improvements you are most keen to see. Like some people who want to get huge/are huge can lift bugger all weight in comparison to others who were training to get strong rather than aesthetically pleasing.

In terms of putting on 10-15kgs of lean muscle, that'd take a while regardless of what sort of training you're doing wouldn't it?

I always go with the don't knock it til you try it approach an I haven't done crossfit so I can't comment. It looks pretty tough though!

There are lots of vids of Amy Dracup on Youtube, she is the best female Crossfitter in Oz

Did search, do like

Heck yeah it does. You would be doing very well to gain 15kg of lean muscle in 12 months (depends on age, gender, diet, and experience among many other variables) although hypertrophy training will get you there quicker than strength or power training - Hence the "big guy, who can't lift as much as the smaller guy, phenomenon"

Dilemma gents.

Shoulder twinged bit after a spirited rock skimming session when the family was up last, thought little of it, but it hasn't gone away and continues to get a bit worse. Cross chest tricep extensions seem to aggravate it the most so I've ditched those but tonight it was just unhappy with everything and feels quite tender so I bailed on the session.

Sensation is notable around the back portion of the top of shoulder running down and over the top/back portion ot he bicep and into the elbow.

At the moment, I'm icing it up. Thoughts?

Sounds like supra/ infraspinatus issue mate.

Do you get pain on resisted or unresisted shoulder abduction or external rotation?

Are the tendons tender to the touch at the insertion on the greater tubercle? Supraspinatus is the top tendon and infraspinatus tendon will be 2/3 finger breadths below that. They are easier to feel with you hand behind your back.

OK I read up on that, and yeah could be it, the approach for the first link I read was tenins ball massage, rest, drop weight/avoid the exercise while repairing etc etc.

Any other major things it could be that I should be aware of?

Sorry about that lol.

Definitely ice the shoulder regardless.

If its painful to put your arm behind your back and try to touch your other shoulder blade or lift it up to the side, chances are its a rotator cuff issue.

Probably worth getting it checked out if it doesn't go away with ice.

Try getting a ball in between the wall/floor and your shoulder blade and roll around on it till you find a really sore spot and stay there till it fades away.

Chances are there are 2-3 really sore spots.

They'll probably make your shoulder/arm ache a bit when applying pressure...

I wouldn't say either of those two motions are painful for me at all.

EDIT: I iced it last night, and it feels a lot better today, but I think for safety I'll just continue that process through to Monday and skip Friday's session completely and have a light weekend on the tools. Good few days of rest, Ice and some tennis ball work has been the goods in the past.

Nice post Tom

Nick, your girl is doing really well if she can chin properly

There are lots of vids of Amy Dracup on Youtube, she is the best female Crossfitter in Oz

thanks, will send her the vid of Amy for motivation! (the one where she climbs the rope with just upper body, no legs is pretty impressive)

have a real question for you Markos, how come I'm so much stronger at dips than other pressing moves like bench press... I can dip around 135kg (BW + 50kg ) for the same number of reps I bench press 100kg... and I bench more often than I dip?

I think Trozzle was asking the same question a few pages back as well

Are they bench dips though? Because doing legit tricep dips with 60kg strapped to you with a dipping belt is freakin epic!

Bench dips are much easier because of the whole legs on a bench thing I guess

    • For these last 7 years of ownership, I've always had to use a small scissor jack under one of the front tow hooks to raise the front just enough so my low-profile jack fits under to reach my subframe jack point. I'm beginning to get annoyed of always having to do this. Are there any lower low-profile jacks that fit under the gtr lip on a dropped car?
    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
