I would understand the mans concerns about noise, having been in a similar situation, when somone had a car so loud that it ratteled the windows, parked in our old street, i know how shitfull it is.

BUT my car is relativaly quiet. I think the low down rumble is worse then the noise.

can't please everyone all the time.

Hellies in his front lawn will show hiM!

Na seriously if it bothers you and him so much put a restrictor in the cannon for work driving and for open road remove it.. just use a paper clip to hold it in because its not like you want a bolt removed etc takes to much time..

anyways just an idea

In chatswood I have an old fart telling me he likes my "hotrod" and to be careful every morning, abit of a legend ;) no one dares to comment on the noise (cause people in sydney see a black skyline and wont even pull up beside it now) and I do put it in neutral when im going down streets to drop the volume.

Ha love it !!!!!

But seriously why should you have to do anything to your car if its legal.I would tell the old guy to p#ss off , You pay road tax and he doesnt.Matter of fact your tax probably pays for his Miserable existence ( Pension ), as well as his 14 schooners and cigarettes a day.Find out which house is his and drop a burnout at about 3am one sunday morning...thats gotta hurt...

Ok so, i have an R33, with a free flowing exhaust, but still manages to pass the noise polution last time it was tested, it's not a loud exhaust by all means when compared to so many other cars or bikes.

I have a baby capsule in the back for my son and generally drive like a grandmaaaa around town. Yess open road is a different story.

Over the past few months it has become increasingly apparent how much other people don't like our cars, IMPORTS and alike.

Two months ago somone tried to break into my car, the alarm went off all day, and no one called the cops. Two weeks later the alarm was false trigered, and no one called me or the cops. I returned to the car only to recive a rather rude note, stating that if the alarm was to go off once more, the car would be torched.

I park at battery point every morning, about 7:30 every day. I don't speed as it is a 40 zone, plus dam narow lanes. So i pull up to my ususal spot, as usual, the times counts for 5 seconds, the car shuts off, i do all my ususal stereo face off ect. I get out and an elderly man, ealry 70's, is waiting for me.

So the conversation basically starts like this.

Him: " Must you park that incicious thing here" (ps no idea what that word means)

Me: "Excuse me"

Him: "Every morning i wake up, i don't even set my alarm any more"

Me: "Appologies"

The conversation then goes on to basically tell me that the car is so loud and so forth, that i must have replaced my exhaust with a quote" NOISE MAKER" ect. He then procedes to tell me how he can hear me tear off in the afternnoon up the road ect. Yeah because in a COLD turbo engine the first thing you do when you start it is thrash the shit out of it.

I then proceed to state that the car is road legal, meets all ADR and tasmanian regulations as listed on the copmpliance plate ect. Hence the car is legal and will continue to be driven.

The conversation went on for a bit more and stoped fairly quickly after i showed hiom the baby seat in the back, upon which i appologised once again and went on my meary way.

Now i don't do anything to provoke these guys, i pull in nice an quiet, never rev my engine and so forth.

One spot up from me a great V8 parks which is next to defening (trust me i hear it every morning as it pulls up), but my car is still louder.

Why is it that in todays society, so many people simply hate our cars and the younger generation who have pasion and drive to make their machines as good as they can be.

Now i would understand the gentelmans concern if the car was loud but it is not loud by any means, the pufter valve makes more noise then the exhaust.

So this afternoon i am expecting some slashed tires and a burnt out shell.

So what the hell is it, Sorry but i jsut had to vent.

eh.. man that sucks..

read this thread.. it's got mayb info you need...

theres a user who told us abt this exhaust... it's called XFORCE...

it might be good for u.. it might solve all your problems

>_<

Harleys have a special exemption, not sure what the fudge it is .. but i read about it somewhere..

See harley's aren't that loud when you buy one new. On the first service however, all the baffles are removed from the exhaust. viola! loud bike! Got a mate who works at a harley shop and he told me it's part of the first service package... i.e. you have to specifically ask them if you want them to leave the baffles in!

Testing for a Harley is slightly different from most bikes on the road. They are tested at 2500 rpm while other 4 stoke bikes are tested at 3000rpm.

For a bike pre '85 the noise limit is 100dB post 85 it is 94dB. This is still 4dB louder than what cars are allowed to run. that may not seem like very much however it is closer as being twice as loud as a car at 90dB.

Haha, gold! +1

i thought most harleys come here with shit little exhaust on em that get swapped out when they get sold, just like if you import a car with 3" exhaust and front mount, they take em off for compliance then throw em back on. i dare say most harley's on the road are illegal just nothing gets done about it

I wouldnt worry about it too much! As long as you do everything right, who cares!

I had a similar situation with an old neighbour.

They didnt like my car starting up at 6am to goto work (greenkeeper) however it was ok for them to have their son practicing being a DJ pill popper at 11pm on a sunday.

They got over it, Im sure this old bloke will to

And some old people can be real friendly, others just grumpy, got nothing else better to do

e.g. Xmas eve, mrs and I parked down a side street near Dan Murpheys to stock up on Xmas grog!

It was sooo busy! we got a trolley to bring a few cases back. Pack the car, mrs goes"I'll walk it back and meet me round the front" sweet as (Ive trained her well) and as she walks with troller, old bloke comes up

"you better not leave that there"

Just jumped at us. I was like wtf??? dont jump to conclusions mate, can you see what we are doing?

he then mumbled some crap. I said "excuse me, if you have something to say, say it so we can hear it"

his reply "dan murphys as parking around the back"

I kinda lost it - "have you seen how busy it is in therE? the main roads full, both parkings full, this is the only area"

as I say that more people are parking

rude barstard - asnd I was in a 323...imgaine what he would have said if I was in my 33! >_<

re - harleys

Their standard exhausts are just under the Db level

Its the aftermarket pipes like

vance & hines

screaming eagle

etc

They are way over the limit, yet I also wonder how they dont get picked on. I guess it could be a resemblance to the "bandito's" or the "comenchero's" or the "Im a big man on a big bike im tough" clubs so people just leave em alone

i got an epa in my first car (supra) for being too loud got it tested and it came up to just over 100db too bad i wrote it off before i got it cleared lol

i work in a shopping centre so i have to park in underground car parks and there were this group of people that hated my car one of them even told me he was gonna slash my tyres sayin my car was a pos. . . . i think that guy wanted to die lol

i used to leave it in first coming down the ramp and slowly going through the car park then as i would go past there excels and civics plant the fast pedal and make all there alarms go off

ahh wouldnt it be great to be 19 again im an old c**t now

as for harleys i so want one there awesome im a big fella as well i just wont shave a few dayz and cruise around on one looking mean lol ;)

My 33 is pretty loud... I often set car alarms off in the multi-level carpark here at work. I'm jsut rolling along nice and slowly (i.e. around 5-10km/h) and if I give it a tiny bit of go (i.e. say 2500RPM) I frequently hear alarms going off. It's pretty funny actually, although I don't do it much anymore (novelty wore off, and I kinda feel bad coz when people get back to their cars and there is that extra chirp when they unlock, it's really not a nice feeling!)... but it used to be fun :)

My 33 is legal volume, but has a rumble to it, it sets off alarms, even when you first start it up, if it's beside a car with a sensitive shock sensor, it sets them all.

It's not the loudness, but the deepness that sets the alarm off.

Exactly... Mine is probably (lol... definently ;) ) over the 90dB limit... but it's a low rumble until you really give it some go (i.e. over 4500RPM...) so it's the low note resounding around the concrete carpark walls, rather than the sheer volume. It's almost certainly under 90dB at those revs anyway...

About the noise..

Firstly I agree that it's ridiculous how loud some bikes (and trucks) are...

but you might want to consider the type of sound that is produced. I have a GTR with a fairly expensive exhaust which most would say is very quiet indeed, however the sound is a very low frequency which during the day can barely heard, during the night is an obnoxious drone for those trying to sleep. Coupled with the fact that I usually leave my timer on for awhile when I get home, or let the car warm up a bit before I leave, tends to get up the nose of my GFs dad. I have pointed out that his historic Vauxhall is far louder than my car, but it's all about when and where.. and that is a fair point. There isn't very much I can do about it, so I just try to be as courteous as I can about it.

    • OK, next the shroud needs to come off and there are a couple of tricks. Firstly, there is a loom from near the passenger side headlight to the fans, coolant temp sensor etc and there is no plug to undo.  In my case I was OK to leave the shroud on top of the engine so I just undid the passenger side fan plug and about 10 of the clips which gave enough free wire to put it aside. The fan plugs were super tight, the trick I used was a small falt screwdriver to push down on the release tab, then a larger flat screwdriver to lever the plug out of the fan unit....be careful with how much force you apply! If you need to remove the shroud altogether for some reason you will have to deal with all the plugs (tight) and clips (brittle)....good luck. I removed all of the clips and replaced them with cable ties that I will just cut next time. Also, in the Red Sport / 400R at least, the intake heat exchanger reservoir hose is bolted to the shroud in 2 places with 10mm headed bolts; so remove them (the hose stays in the car; no need to undo it at the t fittings down at the radiator lower mount. Once you've dealt with the HX hose and the wiring loom, there are 3x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the shroud to the radiator; remove those.   The shroud then lifts out of the bottom mounts where it sits on the radiator, up and onto the engine out of the way. Simples
    • Ok, disregard my “rate them” comment, sorry for my unrealistic input
    • OK, now we are ready to get started. You need to remove the air boxes on each side for clearance. The cover is straightforward, undo the clips on the top and lift the front cover out of the rest of the housing. If it is tight you can remove the air filters first. The rear section of the airbox is trickier. On each side you need to remove the Air flow meter wiring which is held to the airbox with a clip; you need to get behind the clip on 2 sides if you want to remove it without breaking it - unclip the harder side and pull on the clip with medium force, then unclip the easier side and it should pop out The airbox is held onto the intake hose with a spring clamp; you need to get a flat bladed screwdriver behind the spring on both sides and pop them outwards. When you have got them in the right unclipped place they will stay there and the airbox slips out pretty freely. Put a rag in the intake to prevent anything getting dropped in there, and also to prevent you seeing that the turbo seal is leaking oil (as they do). Then. The top of the radiator is held by a steel plate, it is secured by 2x10mm and 2x12mm headed bolts . Remove them and remove the plate Also grab the bushings that hold the radiator to the plate on each side so they are not lost!
    • Next, remove the upper and lower radiator hoses, both are held with a spring clamp. While you are under there, tackle the Auto Trans cooler lines.  Again both are held on with spring clamps, and as mentioned above you should cap them on the radiator side with an 8mm cap, and on the car side loop them with a length of 8mm pipe - this will stop you losing a dangerous amount of AT fluid during the rest of the job If you've been meaning to add a sender for AT trans temp, this is a great time to do it; put a sender fitting into the passenger side line as that is the inlet to the cooler/radiator.
    • Next you need to remove the intake duct (as with pretty much every job on these cars), it is a series of clips you gently remove with a flat bladed screwdriver. They do get brittle with time and can break, and I have not found a decent quality aftermarket one that fits (they are all too soft or flimsy and don't last either) but the nissan ones are a couple of bucks each (ouch).  Once the clips are off (either 8 or 10, I didn't check) you lift the intake duct out and will see the reservoirs Undo the line into the radiator side cap (some bent needle nosed piers are awesome for spring clamps) and then remove the 4x 10m nuts that hold both in place.  I didn't get these pics, but remove the line under the radiator reservoir (spring clamp again) then remove that reservoir. Then you can get at the intake reservoir, same thing, spring clamp underneath then remove it. BTW This is a great time to put in a larger (+70%) combined reservoir that AMS makes..... https://www.amsperformance.com/product/q50-q60-red-alpha-coolant-expansion-tank/ They also make an Infiniti branded and part# version if that is your thing
