Well after 2 solid late nights the bottom end has been assembled :)

A last minute decision was made and the 25 head will be put back on but will be slightly played with porting wise, just to get the car back and get it roadworthy again before the rego runs out.

The "Red R Secret spec head" :woot: will go on at a later date.

Pics of the ASR race sump will be up in a week or 2.

Going to get it engineered, emissions the whole nine yards.

I have to get a quieter exhaust made first though. How do you make a 4inch exhaust flow 450+rwkw and be around the 90db range? That is the question.

Start with 2 center mufflers and twin 2 1/2inch rear section.

Check these out:

Would they suppress the noise though?

Being 4" makes it hard any muffler you get off the shelf is going to have been designed for a truck/generic truck uses unless its custom, though you need some size to the mufflers to get any real DB reduction out of them. I would/will be (when i get to it) going as big a middle muffler as you can fit (something oval shaped, keeping in mind 10cm ground clearance so it needs to hug the body pretty well) and a custom muffler for the rear thats as large as they can make fit in the space.

If you go overkill from the start you can always make it louder later on but having to modify it multiple times because it isnt quiet enough gets expensive.

NSW is harder than ACT as you need to be 91db or less from idle to 4500rpm (or what ever they test to), ACT you just need to be 91 or less at the test RPM.

have you chosen a Turbo setup yet?

what diff ratios are you going to run and what gearbox?

running 4.3 diff will help alot when it comes to response especially out of corners,

The supra in the vid seems to have short gears which helps minimise lag into the next gear.

oh and let me know when its done im definately coming to eastern creek when your car is done

Titan is on the money, Dave you need to fit two of the largest oval shaped straight through items you can fit. Being in the exhaust game I might be able to assist with something that will suit off the shelf. Otherwise a custom hand packed can and tube similar to what Racepace offers may be your only, but more expensive option.

I was pricing up 4inch pipe last night.

$176US for a 4ft straight tube of stainless delivered.

But buy 3 of them and its $675??? Figure that one out.

$120US for a 4ft straight tube of mild steel delivered.

Hey,

The short answer? I think you can get "close" but that won't cut it for emissions testing.

Depends on whether you only want to pass the test; or whether you need to be 100% compliant 100% of the time, and also on whether you want to run your turbo to within an inch of its life

(e.g you might be able to make the power on a more-restrictive system by leaning harder on the turbo).

If pass-the-test - build a system as close to legal as you can:

6" metal cat + 4" stainless perf + wrapped in stainless steel wool + fibreglass + stainless can x 2 (2 large custom mufflers) got me down to 93dB.

They were made as large as would fit in the available space.

Then do whatever you need to pass the test (e.g. plate-with-holes-as-gasket; made out of cardboard so you don't need to violate your cert by removing it :ermm:

Provided you're close-to-legal (i.e. within a couple of dB) you should be fine.

If 100% compliance required, I think you'll have to size back your exhaust and flow demands or accept a shorter turbo life.

Also, twin 2.5" is roughly equivalent to 3.5" (not 4"); so you might want to go 3.5" to twin 2.5"; or 4" to twin 3"

I'd guess those mufflers will either flow well (small diamond) or reduce noise levels (big diamond) but I doubt they will do both.

I don't think they have enough volume. I haven't measured them, of course. Any muffling is going to hurt performance some.

I'll be interested to see your results; as I think my last cooler-pipe-off-flame destroyed the packing in both my mufflers.

Cheers,

Saliya

Dave, my whole exhaust system is purely custom, can have it made to any length and shape etc with the mufflers.

The guy who does it is a family friend, to build my exhaust I had to take the car there, jack it all up, and he actually went under it and measure all sorts of things to get the mufflers the perfect lengths etc to fit.

You can fit some MASSIVE mufflers in there, including before the catalytic converter.

PM me if you want me to try T-up a time/day to have a lot

Hi Matt, are the mufflers custom or a stock item that can be ordered. My business (Lillford Exhaust) are going to try and sort something out for Dave as his car is at Red R Racing here in Newcastle and it would be nice to have the car fully complete before it returns to Sydney.

Ill be ringing suppliers for something suitable tomorrow but if you can give me the heads up it may save some time.

Thanks in advance

Dave

Twin 3 inch would be a lot easier and look less like a truck exhaust. :)

The worry will be when the emissions test comes up so low, they will want to know why...

my brother has an apexi n1 which is 3" straight thru, sounds completely different to a single pipe setup & much louder :)

    • Before I get to the test day, just to finish off the android head unit. This is a demo from car start up....the standard/host system takes a few seconds to boot (same as all v37) but Android comes up quickly. In this vid I'm using the delivered launcher but have set the default to Agami since which is easier to navigate when if use primarily 5 apps. You can see the host system still takes over when required eg putting it in reverse, and you can switch between Android and not by holding the back button 3 sec. It is pretty responsive (fast) but you can see I had to press harder than expected a couple of times.  I still have the phone connected to the stock system, and that also seamlessly takes over Android music playing. v37-android-demo.mp4 The bigger reason that I put this in though is so that I can use Ecutek directly on the head unit. That gives me a dash with logging (up to 20MB only), high and low value warnings on any parameter etc etc. I've run a USB cable from the Ecutek OBD dongle to a USB input on the unit, easy. v37-ecutek-demo.mp4   The unit did freeze on the launcher the other day, I think Agami was trying to verify the license when it didn't have a data connection...will monitor and report back if there are any other problems but so far I'm very happy with the upgrade.
