Hey guys,

Basically i have taken the task of removing turbo's from my R34 GTR by myself, currently i've removed pretty much everything apart from oil / water lines, heat shielding and a few other bits and pieces. Im starting to get a bit confused as to the order things need to come off, and how i go about it. Basically im wanting to know if anyone in the area (Brisbane) would mind lending a hand / knowledge on the process and could possibly help me out one day / evening. I would pay handsomely in alcoholic beverages and food! or happy to give a bit of cash depending on how much work is done! If anyone is available let me know, would be greatly appreciated! Here is a pic of the current state.

Also, have taken stacks of pics of whats happened along the way, hoping to develop some kind of D.I.Y RB26DETT Turbo removal guide at some stage ;)

Any advice / help appreciated! Even if someone could just give me advice on the order to remove the components

From memory:

- Undo your power steering reservoir and move it out of the way, just gives a bit more room to move.

- Remove the hard lines above the heat shields (have something ready to catch the water).

- Remove your front pipe if you haven't already.

- Heat shields off.

- Oil/water lines off.

- Intake off the front of the turbos off (extra long extension bar highly useful for the rear turbo).

- Undo the nuts between the turbo flange and manifold but don't completely remove them.

- Undo the top 6 manifold bolts.

- Drop the turbos down as far as you can without undoing the bolts and with a long extension put it in between the turbo flange and manifold to undo the bottom 6 manifold bolts.

- Completely remove turbo flange/manifold bolts now and lift out manifolds.

- Undo O2 sensors and lift out turbos.

Sounds easy when you say it like that ;)

Like I said, this is from memory only so I may have missed something.

Thanks! Ill look over what you said and give it a go! You wouldnt know which water line is the best to drain from? I've already dumped the oil out so thats not a problem. Havnt removed the front pipes so i should do that i suppose.

I think I used the big centre bolt but I don't think it really matters.

done this job engine in more times than i care to remember....it gets easier the more you do it...just remember, when it gets to you walk away and come back after a beer/coffee/smoke etc. you will get there and feel great when its finally done.

thats the way.. just make sure you start with at least a new carton of your prefered drink and new pack of smokes(if you smoke while working make that 2 packets)

  • 1 month later...

On this note, what is the easiest way of reinstalling turbos?

Considering how much of a bitch it was to remove the rear manifold underside nuts, it must be easier to lift the rear turbo into position from underneath. Trialled the new one all rigged up through the hole and it 'should' be a possibility.

Any other helpful hints would be appreciated.

From memory.... it took us two cartons of beer.......

do you guys have any tips for just changing the extension and dump pipes?

How much beer do I need lol?

alot.. tis flamin mongrel of a job.. small hands.. perhaps the small hands of an eager to learn young teenager.. something that can bend into like.. a snakey S shape.. prolly only carton of piss for changing dumps.. front pipes are easy to change but dumps are ghey.

    • A 1.5 way is a 2 way. It is just a 2 way with a less aggressive ramp on overrun.
    • The ABS and/or TCS being missing/broken will not cause the engine to misbehave. It just casues CEL to come on and annoy you. The CEL is useless if it is always on, so you have to do the things you have to do to get rid of it, so it can be useful. Being a Stag ECU, then yes, it will not expect TCS to be present. But it will expect ABS to be present and working. You will need to either make the ABS CU talk to the ECU (don't ask me what that will take on an NA R34), and make sure the hardware is working....or, you just need to blank it out in Nistune. Do not persist with the stock ECU. You will just have problems. Gte it Nistuned. Start from there. DO YOU HAVE A BOOST SENSOR? The ECU's boost sensor that it. It is connected to the loom at the rear of the coil cover. Usually rides on the firewall on an R34, but is usually bolted down to a bracket along with all the other crap at the back of the coil cover when a Neo is dropped into another car. If you do not have it, the ECU will shit the bed. So, do you have one?
    • So sadly the fuel pump etc was not it. The pump and filter is new and it is still cutting around 4000 rpm. A read something about ABS/TCS (engine is from stagea and ECU too so no TCS) and i dont know for 100% that my car has ABS. It has ABS "cube" in engine bay but i dont think it works(or at least from my braking experience). Can be something like that?  I will be driving the car next week to Nistune tuner to properly see what is wrong...
    • the Tomei LSD fluid with lsd kit. frustrated that it was shaking the car to crap and affecting everything else negatively, I pulled the diff last night, and removed the lsd carrier, could not find anything wrong, however it seem to be 100 locked up acceleration, and deacceleration, wondering if they sent me a 2 way not a 1.5??  either way I installed the stock open carrier back in place. test drove everything smooth as butter again. no shake, shutter, random, what felt like clutch slip and grab or drive shaft play, etc. something differently wrong in side the lsd. I might bother taking it apart (if possible) to figure out what's going on inside this carrier, as bought too long ago to return.  only draw back is its back to a one wheel wonder.
