One of my former R33's has now been sold on to another of my mates and he has plans to up the power a tad.

He's budgeting 2K and wants it to be safe. I'm asking you guys coz I haven't had a Turbo car since I sold the GTR a year ago and it's been even longer since I had the Series II R33, RB25DET with manual cog swapper.

It currently has the following power wise.

Complete turbo back exhaust

Pod filter in heat shielded custom airbox

Dual boost mode for 7psi standard.

My guess was to go something like the following - prices are guesses too.

Slidewiz type highflow turbo ~900?

Justjap style FMIC kit ~ 400?

SAFC + tune ~ 200 + 800ish?

Fuel reg/pump? no idea.

I know that's more than 2k but I assumed my prices would be wrong or that I was overcompensating parts wise.

Max power is not the issue, engine safety and drivability is.

I also considered scrapping the FMIC in favour of an R34 GT-T side mount but I was unsure of the max power these could push.

PowerFC is out of the question due to costs.

My guess for the above was a healthy 200-220rwkw's if fuel mods were also done.

Thoughts?

Fuel Pump - $200

FMIC - $450 (or less from our traders i think)

S-AFC + Tune - $700 give or take

Clutch - 1k

Thats the 2350 spent, and thats over the budget with no more room for coil packs being in need of replacement (always a possibility)

I woudnt upgrade the turbo on a S-AFC only, full ECU or nothing is my view there.

And then i dont like the 'affordable' turbos... prefer my researched and proven ball bearing models

Thats my view, if it doesnt have the stock clutch then maybe spend it on a diff? Usually they let go early too and a single spinner is the pits

for the money i'd do things in order of reliability first up, i.e a good clutch, fuel pump etc, then later down the road when he's after more power, the previously mentioned mod's will come into affect and he can spend whatever he has saved up on actual power upgrade's...

That'll come to 2300 give or take, mainly dependent on how ugly/rubbish offset/damaged the rims are ;)

say hello to 5 seconds off your pb at wakefield (easily).

if you want 2k of power in an r33 with rubbish stock ecu:

second hand blitz ebc

china front mount kit

safc

tune

chuck in some sway bars for good measure. I can't help but look towards handling mods :(

Stock clutch is good for 200rwkw (just) if you are nice to it. be nice until you have another 700 or so for a clutch

Also think forward, if he wants to chase a bit more power later, dont skimp on some stuff now.

I mean if 200rwkw is all you want, no worries... but later if you decided to go further some things like the FMIC or turbo (if changed) might not be upto the task and resale poor etc

It has splitfire coilpacks already.

It has height adjustable Bilstien shocks with whiteline adjustable camber kits - I know coz I installed them when I had the car :banana: Already has dished 18's with 265's out back and 235's up front.

I sold the car with an Exedy heavy duty clutch, but I don't think it was installed or passed on to this owner so clutch could be an issue.

So you guys are not recommending a cheapy highflow? I'd of thought he'd make more power with a highflow and safc than the stock turbo and a powerFC, plus the stocker isn't gonna push more than 12-13 for very long, it's the original turbo on a car that's done close to 90k's mind you it's never been boosted beyond 7 while I had it or my mate after me and from what I know the current owner, another mate, hasn't boosted it either.

I was under the impression getting a PFC tuned was in the range of 1k, especially where we are - Albury/Wodonga region - though travel to Melb is not out of the question. That'd eat up the 2k pretty damn quick.

Plus I'm not sure if he plans to go further beyond this round of mods. Keep the ideas coming guys and I'll dig up some more info.

Ive quite sucessfully ran the base map on the power fc with some mixture correction (use injector tables). They run quite a good STD map its just a little rich. Did this on our STD turbo dyno winning GTR at SAU dyno day and made 287KW at the tyres with minimal knock. To prove a point i initialised the power fc and with six adjustments (each injector) made the same power. So no need to go for a full tune on a street car if you know what your doing.

You would...timing figures are quite conservative and fueling is excessive on the base map. Leaning off each injector is quite a safe method and we have double checked this method on a dyno with AFR meter and found it to be just fine.

a lot better than running a stock ecu and with boost levels up to 1 bar will be quite OK.

but...not a thing to tinker with if you are not confident on what you are doing.

this method is no more risky than running a STD ECU in your car using Aust. fuel

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed 
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
