I was in a similiar possition with finance and couldnt get a skyline. chose a rex instead (and wouldnt have it any other way now). Heaps of nice ones around 25K. I got an immaculate stock rex for $24300. Mainly MY97 and MY98's in that price range.

Famous have very odd quotes. When i i rang up 3 times they gave me three RIDICULOUS prices.

RAC will insure WRX's for you. I pay around 2K a year but thats in my name. I only have 20% NCB. If i had gone under my dads, it would have cost me about 1.5K.

Suss out what rex's will offer you.

just as a follow up, i just got off the phone to the RAC with some pretty good news...

they quoted me $3920 per year for a 1998 subaru WRX to a value of $25,000

then they quoted me $1960.37 for the same car under my mums name with me as a nominated driver..

im pretty happy with this price, and altho dissapointed i cant get my preferred skyline, still happy with a WRX

hope this info helps any others that are in the same boat as me

thanks fellas

While we are talking insurance and the RAC ..... my car (R33 GTST) is insured in my mums name with me as 30% driver by the RAC ....... bill came in this month ..... costing me $1.4K .... is it just me or for a car thats insured in my parents name this is unusally high?? ...... does anyone know of anywhere that'll insure my "mums" :P car for less?

by insuring in your parents name you are not generating your own No Claim Bonus, even as a nominated driver (qoute RAC unquote) so just putting off the high premiums till later on --- Sons 180sx is in his name he just turns 19 this week been insured for a year with no claims etc and his premium has dropped 600 dollars with RAC so my advise to the younguns is to tough out the 1st year and then once you have your own No claim bonus you will see the cost go down fast

Hrmm, my previous car was insured under my parents name and I was the nominated driver and I got 40% no claims through RAC because of being a nominated driver on their policy..

For the record I am 21, 50% no claim paying $1450pa for MY99 WRX through RAC.

if you want HBF insurance you need to suck up to me.

BIGTIME

nah even then guys HBF new rulings are as soon as you say import you get put on hold and then the decision gets made by our underwriting manager. Unfortunately we recently had a large claim for very little damage on an import and it has opened their eyes to what kind of amount they have paid out in the past for no real good reason as repairers have been quoting phenominal prices without utilising the second hand parts market that is available.

Not many of you know but I have been trying for ages to get imports specifically skylines insured by us and after all the time and effort and phone calls and hard work etc its all fallen in a heap because of a recent claim. I have done a bit of insurance for a few of you that have qualified, but if you want insurance now, you need to be older than 23 with a clean history and a very minimally modified car. but still depending on no claim bonus expect to pay from $900 to $2300 or thereabouts.

but PM me if you have a query and only if you are meeting the above criteria.

This is a one time only offer.

oh yeah and none of the its my dads or mums car which i drive blah blah, if they bought it for you then YOU insure it and keep the system simple.

Exactly, Your no claim bonus from under a parents name is completely at thier discretion.

Classic also didn't care I was supposed to have 40% NC, but due to an RAC f**kup, it went back to 30%....

... so i had 30% with classic....

... hence i moved companies :P

    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
    • Well they got my money but they are not getting my gearbox !
    • It's needed for rolling idle up, and I think it is a decider on VCT also.
    • I mean, not really. Link ECU's can absolutely still have errors from the ECU thinking it's getting a sensor it's not expecting. I would imagine the speed at the ECU level in Nistune does absolutely nothing anyway? I assume the ECU does not do any fancy TC stuff with regards to front+rear wheel speed or anything of that like anyway. Someone who uses Nistune may be more fluent in it.
