Hi guys, I recently went to Japan and while I was there picked up an R32 GTR. All good so far untill my dad finds out and decides he wants it. Now thats not a problem hes put a roof over my head for 19 years, lest I can do is let him have the GTR, but he wants to use it for track/hill climbs/motor-khana.

Ive never had an Rb26 and I know they can suffer from oil issues. My father on the other hand has never had an import and knows nothing he just wants to get in and drive and have some fun.

It has:

R34 N1 Turbos (30,000km old)

Orleans Coilovers (10,000km old)

Turbo back exhaust

HKS Filters

Bucket seat

What things should I be doing to ensure the engine/gearbox/diff will last? I really dont know much about them and any info you can help me out with your be much appreciated. It going in for some minor mechanical work when it arrives, so happy to book it in for some other things at the same time.

If its going to see track work do the modifications to the oil galleries to the head (search sydneykid and oil restrictors to find the thread where it shows you how to do it), invest in a decent oil cooler, make sure the tune is running safe, service it with some decent fluids and she should be fine.

Also probably worth a look to check how all the bushes are underneath her and replace them with some adjustable ones or replace the arms to dial in everything as the factory ones will most likely be flogged.

gearbox diffs etc are pretty good. oil problems are the biggest problem of an rb26. search for sydney kids guide thingy and folllow it to the letter.

its a tricky one for sure! and can be costly..

often you find yourself doing a rebuild as soon as that head comes off. simply because "you may aswell"

but it surely out turns for the better when you end up with a good reliable quick car.

If you want to skimp, get the sump extension, a decent oil pump (JUN HKS etc), and a head restrictor.

I'm running that setup, and I haven't had any problems on the track at all with oil pressure (even running RE55's and a decent suspension setup etc).

On a stock motor, i couldn't think of worse ways to waste money.

All you do to keep it alive is this.

Keep power to 300rwkw and that would be on about 17-18psi.

Service it regularly with decent oil

Put an extra 1litre if your really paranoid and hitting the track

Without the oil restrictors in the block, extra return drilling and so on (read: motor out and a rebuild)

Even then, the stock sump is MORE than adequate with the restrictors/return etc for 350rwkw track GTR's.

The hi-octane add IMO is very misleading saying the sump barely isnt enough for the stock motor, its more than enough for a stock car... and on a properly prepped motor even more so the case is proven when there were heaps of 350rwkw GTR's here in melb, on stock sumps (1ltr over filled, N1 oil pumps) without a problem.

Adding a bigger sump does nothing but mask the true problem. The problem is too much oil getting into the head, and not enough getting out.

SO... by adding more oil to the bottom end (without fixing the top end) just means there is MORE oil to get into the head and cause MORE problem.

The oil pump collar is to enlarge the crank drive to suit later pumps

the 33 and 34 have a larger crank drive for the oil pumps.

a return oil drain at the back of the head is the new thing to do with the rb26.

I wouldnt bother upgrading the pump

You have a R32 motor, it has the older/crap pump drive. A simple search will answer all your questions about collars/oil pump drives

If you limit the power, dont rev the ass off it. It will be fine for long enough.

You have to consider its a 15yr+ old motor with inherrant problems in a number of areas… most of which cannot be fixed without a rebuild/motor being pulled apart,

So either way its not going to last forever if you want to start circuit. So budget for the rebuild… or don’t chase power/circuit duties

How many litres are these guys putting in? I fill my engine from a massive big container so havent measured it as yet so dont know.

yes i know the high octane sump is overkill. however he is saying the car is to be used for hillclimbs etc

and being an r32 anything to help is a bonus in my eyes. however if you read my post i told him to follow sydney kids guide which includes solving the oil return problem.

my r32 gtr is almost finished it's rebuild, a rebuild caused by no oil to no.1 bearing. 330rwkw and the sump was overfilled by 1ltr.

That's right. If you don't do the other oil control mods an aftermarket pump will make the problem worse. Aftermarket pumps flow more and therefore can empty the sump more quickly.

+1 for overfill of 1 litre, of a good fully synthetic oil at the correct operating temperature (so you'll probably need a cooler). If you're going to aftermarket pump, crank collar, and the oil control mods you might as well just do a full rebuild.

Which you will probably need anyway. Unopened 32 gtr engines are getting a bit long in the tooth. Spun bearings are becoming more common.

    • Have a look at that (shitty) pic I posted. You can see AN -4 braided line coming to a -4 to 1/8 BSPT adapter, into a 1/8 BSPT T piece. The Haltech pressure sender is screwed into the long arm of the sender and factory sender (pre your pic) into the T side. You can also see the cable tie holding the whole contraption in place. Is it better than mounting the sender direct to your engine fitting......yes because it removes that vibration as the engine revs out 50 times every lap and that factory sender is pretty big. Is it necessary for you......well I've got no idea, I just don't like something important failing twice so over-engineer it to the moon!
    • Yup. You can get creative and make a sort of "bracket" with cable ties. Put 2 around the sender with a third passing underneath them strapped down against the sender. Then that third one is able to be passed through some hole at right angles to the orientation of the sender. Or some variation on the theme. Yes.... ummm, with caveats? I mean, the sender is BSP and you would likely have AN stuff on the hose, so yes, there would be the adapter you mention. But the block end will either be 1/8 NPT if that thread is still OK in there, or you can drill and tap it out to 1/4 BSP or NPT and use appropriate adapter there. As it stands, your mention of 1/8 BSPT male seems... wrong for the 1/8 NPT female it has to go into. The hose will be better, because even with the bush, the mass of the sender will be "hanging" off a hard threaded connection and will add some stress/strain to that. It might fail in the future. The hose eliminates almost all such risk - but adds in several more threaded connections to leak from! It really should be tapered, but it looks very long in that photo with no taper visible. If you have it in hand you should be able to see if it tapered or not. There technically is no possibility of a mechanical seal with a parallel male in a parallel female, so it is hard to believe that it is parallel male, but weirder things have happened. Maybe it's meant to seat on some surface when screwed in on the original installation? Anyway, at that thread size, parallel in parallel, with tape and goop, will seal just fine.
    • How do you propose I cable tie this: To something securely? Is it really just a case of finding a couple of holes and ziptying it there so it never goes flying or starts dangling around, more or less? Then run a 1/8 BSP Female to [hose adapter of choice?/AN?] and then the opposing fitting at the bush-into-oil-block end? being the hose-into-realistically likely a 1/8 BSPT male) Is this going to provide any real benefit over using a stainless/steel 1/4 to 1/8 BSPT reducing bush? I am making the assumption the OEM sender is BSPT not BSPP/BSP
    • I fashioned a ramp out of a couple of pieces of 140x35 lumber, to get the bumper up slightly, and then one of these is what I use
    • I wouldn't worry about dissimilar metal corrosion, should you just buy/make a steel replacement. There will be thread tape and sealant compound between the metals. The few little spots where they touch each other will be deep inside the joint, unable to get wet. And the alloy block is much much larger than a small steel fitting, so there is plenty of "sacrificial" capacity there. Any bush you put in there will be dissimilar anyway. Either steel or brass. Maybe stainless. All of them are different to the other parts in the chain. But what I said above still applies.
