Oh cool. Next time I get done I won't bother putting my stock cat back in, ill just use an oxy torch to heat my decat up til its red hot and see what happens.

I just pictured you doing that lol

lol. I went through Regency on my 33 once when it was defected, not knowing the greddy plenum was illegal cuz it changes emissions he reckons, thats a nightmare of a job to replace but i had to. So considering the cat is the number one factor when it comes to emissions control, i thought they would pay it closer scrutiny...just imagine if u were pulled over and checked on the spot for it would be a huge fine/money maker

I remember once when i brought a car from John Verban, Regency made me replace the brake hoses on front and rear cuz they had Japanese writing and said there wasnt aloud to be any writing on them and mine had Japanese writing on them as youd expect lol. That would be the weirdest thing ive encountered b4. Other then that i even passed regency with a big rust hole in the lower rear quarter panel (later i got fixed) because it wasnt structural.

I have never actually heard of anyone receiving this "massive fine" for not having a cat. Why do I have a feeling that it's no more than the car guy boogeyman?

EPA law says up to $10k fine - probably not enforced rigorously due to the excessive nature of the fine. Or it could come down to whether the dude at regency got laid the night before or not..

-D

Surely that fine would only be for businesses though. Like a workshop that builds cars for clients knowingly avoiding doing any emission stuff but telling the customer its all fine. A similar thing happened to Jesse James in the US, the EPA came after him for like $250,000 in fines for bikes he'd built that didnt conform to California's strict emissions laws.

^Crap looks like what i said would happen did so exactly to a bloke from Vic, 1500$ on the spot fine for a de-cat. Thats deff made me think twice now, they could prolly fine that much for external gate/s and screamer pipe/s

But cops can still demand u to go to Regency then and there for a mecahnical inspection or ID check cant they or not?

No. They give you a defect notice and then you have to book the car in.

Its different in Victoria. There they'll set up an rbt station as a trap and then send cars they think are unroadworthy round the corner to workshop that they set up an inspection station at. They can hide they're unfair targeting of modified cars behind the guise of a "random" breath test.

Scandy you've got some ignorance goin on, u said u didnt know such a fine even existed, yet found out it was a 10k fine BOOM like Kirsty said stay of the crack lol

ease up mate, weve all heard of the fine, its that here in adelaide we dont know of anyone who's ever been given it. ive heard plenty of stories of people rocking up to regency not knowing about a decat and still not recieving the fine, simply being told to swap it over and come back. If you dont want to run this risk run a proper cat

Dickhead, scroll up and read again.

I said I'd never actually heard of someone being given the fine. We've all heard of the fine itself. But do we have any evidence to support anyone ever actually receiving one? No.

I then further went on to compare to issuing of said fine to the boogeyman.

Problem?

Ps, who the Hell is Kirsty?

    • Have a vb in honour of the car comming back
    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
