Had a quick search and couldn't seem to find an exact answer to this.

Just took the head off from the RB25 and figured i'd clean all the carbon build up on the tops of the pistons while the heads away. What's the best thing that will dissolve/clean away all the carbon? Metho? Kero? I have no idea...

A soft aluminium scrapper, and sometimes a small screwdriver used as a peen tool and the carbon pings off [don't use it too hard, the idea is to shatter the carbon not mark the piston]. Used correctly both tools will remove carbon without damage. Then your stuck with carbon soot falling down between the piston and the bore and sitting on the top compression ring, but it shouldn't last long once you start it up again.

I've heard Water Meth Injection will do the job nicely..

Haha i was actually thinking then when i saw how much crap there was on top of the pistons.

becareful not to go too silly, if the engine has some kays on it and you get aggressive and dissolve the carbon build up around the ring (lands, etc) etc it will blow smoke......

Oh ok, cheers Trent. Im getting the head done at that Lewis engines place that you mentioned in Adelaide, see how it goes. You end up getting a head off of them?

im building a pretty crazy 26 atm for a customer so i should be sending one over there (mine) to test the waters first in about a fortnight or so..

    • I can see between the water jacket and cyl 3 there wasn't a hard line of combustion gas. It certainly appears that the issue is coming from there. Yes, checked the tension. All at 100ft lbs where I set them 5 years ago. These blocks can crack but generally when they have been over bored. Mine is only 0.5mm oversize at 89.5mm. They break between cylinders around the 91mm mark. No sign of that with mine. My gut feeling is the head gasket lifted a while back when the studs stretched and i bandaided it by retorquing the studs. It's finally let go.
