righto, looking at upgrading the server case before summer hits again. currently running a thermaltake M9D.

i was looking at the lan li TYR PC-X2000B. but after killing 2HDD and 2 GPU's from heat. i need something that has good cooling properties.

at the moment there is a 40mm fan under each HDD for cooling ( 5.25 bay with a bracket) so i'm after something that has ~10x 5.25 drive bays to have enough room for the fan setup's.

suggestions?

Lian Li Armorsuit PC-P80B - 12 x 5.25" bays. Fill it with Lian-Li EX-H34 for 16x3.5" hotswap bays. Has a great cooling setup.

Ash: have fun configuring a RAID5 with a P67 ICH controller, much lulz has been had in our office the past few weeks with RAID5, P67 and Caviar Greens :D

I run a modded Perc 5/i card mate, its all hardware driven, not sofrtware. Hence it's so fken fast compared to ICHRX

I've actually got 3 still here that i picked up for a steal of a price a while back.

I'll use the 2nd card for a backup server, the other two i'll probably just sell.

its a pity how 16:10 used to be the norm, now you have to pay an effing premium for it :/

Yep, i refuse to but a 16:9.

Haven't had one for 4yrs now and won't go back. I'd soooo hard to find a 16:10

I have the Sammy 2443BW as well, great screen. Had it since Nov last year :D

haha how much is one of your PERC cards worth? software RAID can still be fairly quick for purely storage use!

Will get a 16:10 monitor when I've got my R32 running right, ATM it's more of a priority than nice things for the PC, downside of being on trainee wages!

Care to part with one? I have two - one in my fileserver, one in my esxi server - would like another for my fileserver... I got mine at a decent price on eBay with the battery-backed cache a few years back. They're rockin' cards :)

that's fairly cheap given the price of a new RAID card, and damn I was hoping you were going to use the ICH so you could find out about things like sector aligning the drives lool.

do you cards have internal or external connectors? Most of the ones on Ebay appear to have external SCSI connecters rather than internal SAS/SATA connectors

Yeah man they aren't that expensive really. Awesome value. You just need to give them a fan on 5v (cable ties FTW) and then you are laughing. I didn't put a heatsink like other crazy mofo's and mine is fine.

The 5i thread from god :)

It's all there. They are SAS to SATA - internal ;)

I'm going to upgrade my computer in a couple months, this is what I had in mind..

Thoughts? Comments?

(I already have an ATI 6970 video card, plus hard drives)

Which PC store is this from?

Also what is currently the best bang for buck video card for running current games @ 1900x1200 smoothly on high/max settings?

    • You’ll want to have the block drilled and tapped to suit 1/2in head studs and the head for the same. How much power do you intend to make?
    • Sorry for resurrecting an oldish thread Not much has happened in the past year since the last update. The car did another 1000 miles or so and failed the MOT for the first time in October (failed on tyres which had been advised for a couple of years) In October the car got put up for sale and was removed in November due to no interest, being so close to christmas it was to be expected. The roads were dry in February so I decided to tax it early and get the new tyres fitted.   Fast forward to April, I got someone in to give the car a good clean after sitting for the winter.                                 The car got re-advertised and today (Saturday 3rd May) the car sold. The new owner is planning a GTR conversion at some point and a respray in the same pearl white. It's bitter sweet, it's a shame to have the car sit there for half the year and then only do 1000 miles. The kids are growing too quick and space in the back is getting limited. It's been a great 6.5 years of ownership
    • And if you want more power, more reliably, and cheaper, go get the Aussie RB... The 4L Barra and put that in instead.
    • No cats will keep discolouring the rear bar. Sends white paint a weird yellow stain. Cut and polish normally gets it out, but you'll be doing that every fortnight I found.
    • Both heads will be equally reliable or unreliable depending on what you do to them.  Stock the RB26 head will flow more. You have access to the stock intake ITB manifold on the RB26 cheaply which flows really well(1000hp+).   Arguably more aftermarket support for RB26, though in Aus we love our RB30 SOHC heads too.    The only downsides to the RB26 head is if you have a VL commodore and want to keep the SOHC look.  Where you may have an issue is drilling out the rb30 block for the bigger head studs but if you are building a big power motor you'd probably put bigger studs on the SOHC head too.  This is just about finding a good machine shop, sometimes easier said than done.  RB30 head worked can make big power just like a Rb26 head, so really it actually more comes down to what your preference is for your car.  People now even making billet versions of both.
