hey, well on thursday my turbo decide to make some very unusally howling sounds..

it makes it wen acclerating and wen decelerating aswel..

anywyas i wasnt that far from home..

so anyways..

i took the turbo off..notice i had about 2mm shaft play..not that much..and both comp. and exhuast wheel was fine...but spun the wheel and notice some very loud bearing noise from spinning it..so i just thought my turbo bearing was gone...

so anyways i got a s/h turbo off a series1 r33..

but i put my actuator on..

this turbo had about a 1mm of shaft play and had NO bearing noise sound wen being spun..

and i used his oil feed line..instead of mine..just incase i had a blockage in the line...

and i put on oil feed/return lines back on..and water feed and return lines back on..

wit no leaks...

i got just water inside..since im flushing the old coolant out aswel..

anyways...after the secnd-hand turbo was just fitted prefectly..

all hoses and bolts on tight and seemed all good...

i turned the car on..

but notice a very faint sound or whinning/howling sound again...

and yes...its the same sound as before..but not as loud...

but i assume it would get louder if i hit boost or got high in the revs...

i just dont wana risk it...

any ideas???

and i do got a full level of oil and water in the rad.

a mate is tell me to change the wastegate..to the one that came with the turbo..

could this be the problem??

i dont know if its the same sound but i had a noise that sounded like a bearing in the turbo, sounded like it came from the turbo anyways.

turned out to be timing belt bearings were gone, replaced them and sound disappeared.

Could be wrong but it would explain why changing the turbo didnt fix the sound...

well, i cant exactly pin-poin the sound..sounds like it coming from the turbo, then it moves up or out the afm then pod..

but then i thought it was power-steering pump..or air-con pump..well there pulleys..

but yeah..cant exactly find wer its coming from...lol

but can the wastegate actuator cause this fault? not opening, then causing turbo to whine??

ok..well ive fitted a series1 turbo on my car yesterday...

and it had like 1mm shaft-play and NO bearing sound wen i spun the wheel..

so this turbo got fitted...

i started the car but still had the whinning sound...

so anyways..one of mates said try a different wastegate actuator..

still no good as sound was still there..

ive even checked the compressor wheel again...just make sure there isnt dmage to the wheel or bearing sounds...

but looked and sounded perfect!!

so its no that again..lol

but what im thinking now..it could b water-pump..or some idler pulley???

im pulling the front cover off 2day..

neva takin if off before...or either a timing belt...

but my timing belt was done lik 16,000 k's ago...

but i didnt change the water pump or either idler pulleys...

so i'll check here next...

could normal drive-belts whine, as the way ive described my first post?

I dont want this to sound like a ''it's this, because it happened to me'' but ;) my sisters R32 had the same noise and i thought it was turbo bearings. Turned out it was the idler bearings as the outer bearing race had come apart, got stuck around the timing belt and made it jump a few teeth on the inlet cam! Lucky there was no valve on piston love.

get a big screw driver flat head and put the tip on differnt parts of the engine and the other end n ya ear you will hear the vibrations of where its coming from

oh ok..but was ANYONES SOUND during acceleration or wen back off the throttle?? could U hear it whining down aswel...???plus theres no whining on idle....

im thinking its an idler pulley...

there are 2 idler pulleys on a rb25det..is that correct??

but im taking the top timing cover off today..so ill have a look...

and from wat i can see..theres no leaks on the intercoolering piping..

hey "lowRB" wat did ur whining sound like?? wat is during idle or during acceleration/de-acceleration?

could b air-con pulley..sound from that side of the engine...

mit take that belt off..and see if she does it...is that u found out it was the air-con pulley??

Yeah mine would go up and down with revs as pulley went faster etc, made hardly any noise on idle only tiny bit, yeh ended up pulling belt off and could hardly spin the pulley was nearly siezed up.

ok, i had another look..

its definatly from the turbo again..

how could i get the same sound from another turbo?

i thought that my line was blocked...so i took off the oil feed bolt on the turbo(17mm) and ckecked to see if oil was going to the turbo..

looks lik it was getting oil..i evan marked the bolt so the hole was facing the line..so that oil would flow through...

should oil pore out/piss out wen taking this bol off??

coz it doesnt..

but yeah...i took it round the block...which is like 500m..

sound is still there..and i notice burning oil/smoke coming from the back of the turbo...just wen i got back...seems to drive fine..but sound is still there...

i believe it was the oil/crap on the back off the turbo..wer the exhaust wheel and wastegate flap was..

i believe it was burning all that residue/crap off..

does that sound rit???

i also have one bolt thats not in place..becoz the guy who took it off snap the bolt..and try to drill out but f%c#ked it..so i to leave it not bolt in the op corner.....im using my old manifold/turbo and dump seals aswel...

the guy said the turbo was his for about 2weeks...so could it be just running in??

Could it be just a clamp hold loose on a coupling?

Check all your silicone couplings and clamps.

I had that whinning sound before.

It sounded very much like a average size twin ball bearing turbo but louder. It sounded like spool came much faster.

doesnt sound like intercollering piping...

its definatly coming from the turbo area/intake sideof the engine..

i took off my pod filter..and put my ear next to it and u could hear it louder,,,

mit b the stock flex-rubber pipe from afm to compressor...

could have a split in it...

Have you tried removing your air con belt to rule that pulley out?

I would start there... takes 5 seconds, then move on to the next thing

what he said

happend to me, my belt was on too tight. loosened it off and the noise stopped

well, i got new turbo and dump pipe gaskets today..i just got gen. nissan ones..pretty cheap so yeah..

techs from work reckon its a gasket leak..but they wana have a look...

so i'll post up wat they reckon...

has anyone else had a similar whining sound from the turbo area?

wat would a gasket leak sound like anyways? would it sound like wat ive described??

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
