will be getting the ol' 26 forged soon,

have -5's, and the usual supporting bits and pieces,

was thinking about going towards an RB30?

whats the general consensus?

Depends on what you want to use it for.

RB30=more power and torque, but less revs because of the bigger crank.

we are talking about a 30 with 26 head right?

ive seen a lot of people have issues with this setup, mainly oil related and mainly drifters...

i'd go a 26. i just dont like the idea that rb30 is an old engine that also appears in commodores

RB30 and lowmounts.

Dont base your choice on people's opinions who havnt tried both.

Ive tried both, and the RB30 just cant be beaten.

By the way, mine revs to 8000rpm no dramas as does MANY others on these forums, including some going past that without issues, so if anyone tells you they dont rev they either have no fu(king clue and shouldnt be listened to or repeat second hand information still have no fu(king clue and again, shouldnt be listened to.

Best way to do it is to line up a ride in an RB30 GTR from around your area thats got some power behind it, ask the driver to give it a good hard stab in 2nd. That will make your mind up

Sounds like someone's very passionate about their RB30.

Nobody said they didn't rev, just that they don't rev as high as an RB26. 8,000 rpm is nothing to be sneezed at and with all of that torque backing it up, it's a very good engine.

Take for example the world's quickest and fastest Nissan, the HKS 180SX that a few years ago made a 7.27-second 189-mph quarter-mile pass at Sendai Raceway in Japan. The 180SX is powered by an RB26 that produces approximately 1,300 hp at 9,000 rpm and 672 ft./lbs. of torque at 7,000 rpm.

I've also seen on some of my DVD's RB26's reaching 10,000 rpm.

An RB26 costs a lot of dollars, but compare it to an RB30 with a RB25e head and you've a lot of bang for your buck. The RB26 head is a lot more expensive and would take even more money to mate it up

The RB30 would be a better option for your money.

If funds were unlimited, I'd have a different opinion..............

if the rb30's were better than the 26's, im sure all the top drag cars in japan and even here or nz like croydons and heat treatments would use them...

they may produce more torque but they are nowhere near a snappy revving engine..

my 26 is ready to go to 10,000rpm, not that id push it there but it can

There is nothing stopping an RB30 revving as hard as any other RB, this has been proven time and time again so please stop perpetuating an urban myth :(

Also, there are a few threads recently where we have discussed the cost differences and really, if you're forging your 26 the only significant cost difference is the sump adapter.

Hell, RIPS turn their RB30 to 10,000rpm with no special work done (nothing that you wouldn't normally do).

Me personally, I only turn mine to 6,800rpm as it has so much torque I don't need to spin it any higher and, afterall, it's revs that kill engines :D

Oh and the reason you don't see a lot of twincam 30's in Japan is because the RB30E was never released in Japan. There is however, a tuning house over there that specialises in building twincam 30's.

More torque = more stress.

Remember the GTR + 4WD already have problems stripping 3rd gear with a 2.6ltrs as it is.

Adding more torque is only going to compound this issue substantially. Add in diffs and so on and it can get quite expensive totally offsetting the "cheapness" of using a stock RB30 bottom end (which i wouldn't do)

Just something to consider.

RWD really doesn't have much issue as there isn't the stress associated unless your running around on 6k launches/slicks

how many people strip the getrag 3rd gear but claim not guilty to

- drag racing

- flat-shifting or overheating their box while circuit racing

- ignoring worn syncros

Im not talking about Getrag's in the R34 GTR.

The typical 10-15yr old box in R32/R33's that do fail.

These are in circuit, street, whatever. Come onto boost in 3rd - pop. Plenty of times and the street cars are the saddest of all really... plenty of threads over the years about stripped boxes.

Spoken truly like someone who hasn't been in a decent RB30 setup. The Japanese have some interesting ideas, and they aren't always to do with whats best. You say all the top drag cars would be using RB30s instead of RB26s, aside from the fact that RB30s didn't come out in "JDM" cars what do you say about the fact they never really got too into their 2JZGTEs yet the 2Js have been proven to be the toughest straight 6 engines for ages?

God knows how much power the Titan motorsport 6.4s cars were running but I am betting that they are a couple more than Heat Treatments GTR which to my knowledge is the undisputed RB horsepower king at this stage? The Japanese have proven to be scared of big things, their bigger Honda motors, bigger Toyota and bigger Nissan motors never got the love they deserved when elsewhere in the world people have proven them to stick to the "Size does matter" addage, even if some people convince themselves that "How you use it" makes up for it a bit.

For some reason with Nissans people are a bit slow to pick up that the 2.6 isn't the be all, probably easier to do so for purities sake given that it came in the flagship. I've been in various GTRs with different engine configs etc and so far an R33 GTR with a RIPS RB30DET/T04Z combination making ~600whp made all the others seem like childs play. Response/torque/power/sheer brutal it was awesome - but maybe some people like the softer touch of a RB26, less scary :)

    • GCG is a good company, they're a major distributor for Garrett in Japan as well.
    • Nah, OEM washer bottle and brake fluid reservoirs are fine I don't know what it is with the plastic that Mazda used, some plastics, like the washer bottle and brake fluid res are fine, and still look new after 20 years use, where as the coolant expansion tank, and PS reservoir, that I replaced with new OEM items when I first got the car, turned yellow and started getting brittle a few years later If the dirty yellow stained plastics didn't trigger me there wouldn't be an issue, but they did, much like the battery bracket....... Meh As for going back to work full time to support car stuff, nope, why, because I own a Mazda NC MX5, not a Nissan R series Skyline 🤣
    • I've never heard of CJ-motor, so can't advise you on them. I'd just go straight to GCG for a GCG highflow though. Seems no point to use a middleman. I'm somewhat surprised that the price on the CJ site is lower than the GCG retail price. Even though CJ would get a discount of some sort, you would hardly expect them to give up so much margin. Maybe the price is out of date? Having said that "I'd go to GCG"...when I did my highflow, I went to Hypergear. I did this https://hypergearturbos.com/product/rb25dethighflow/#tab-dyno-results with the R34 OP6 450HP profile. With the BB centre (extra $400) and intially with the standard boost actuator, but I eventually got him to send me the high pressure one when I got to the point of being able to actually use it. Ends up costing the same sort of money as the GCG highflow, but this is, of course, the turbo that I KNOW has a shorter length core and so moves the comp cover rearwards. The GCG apparently doesn't do that. My mechanic also swears by the GCG highflow, given that we have another turbo rebuilder who does something essentialy the same as theirs, using Garrett wheels. He says it stands up at really low revs and makes good power. I haven't pushed my HG highflow past ~240-250rwkW yet (should have a little more in it, but unclear how much) and it does have a fairly gentle boost ramp. OK, it's much better now that I have gotten my boost controller tuned up on it.  A lot of my earlier unhappiness was because I couldn't keep the wastegate flap as closed as it needed to be (including some mechanical issues). I'd still prefer it to boost up nearly as quickly as the stocker, and it certainly a bit slower than that. So maybe the GCG one is worth the first look (for you).
    • Ok thanks 🙂 I will higly consider this. Any "known" company for a good reviews and experience to send that off? Is that CJ-motor good one? Or go straight to GCG site? I need to use VPN to even find some of those "shops" let alone access them 🙂
    • You can literally put in as much WMI as it takes to quench the combustion totally (and then back it off a little, obviously), and it will keep making more and more power. The power comes from the cooling effect of the water (and the meth) and the extra fuel (the meth, which also has massive octane). It is effectively exactly like running E85. One might be slightly better than the other, but they are damn close. But with either you can lean on the boost or the timing (or both) waaaay more than with just petrol and the results are similar. Here's the first thing I googled for an anecdotal bit of evidence. Can't access the attachment without being a gold member, but it is there for the getting if able to, or searched up elsewise perhaps. https://www.hpacademy.com/forum/general-tuning-discussion/show/wmi-vs-e85/
