Should a freshly rebuilt engine use more engine oil than one that is run in?

Just curious as i've gone down from full to half on the dipstick in the last 2000 km's since having it rebuilt.. Can't see any leaks but haven't had a proper look for em

EDIT: Engine is forged everything, standard turbo's

How often did you check the dipstick? Gradual usage? Some engines do burn some oil while the rings bed in.

Top it back up and see how it goes.

Also try doing a search cause this has been covered in quite a few other topics.

Ah ok cheers, It'd be roughly 1000km's for the rings to bed in though right? The oil got put in after about 1000km's (so 3000km's total since rebuild) Hopefully it's a leak somewhere, i wasn't losing this much b4 the rebuild.. Can't think of anything else it can be

Also i just checked oil and it's almost on L so thats like.. 1 litre of oil i guess in 2000kms

yeh one of them got replaced when it was in getting rebuilt because the oil seal was gone, but i'll get it up on the ramps at the local tyre joint and check it out in case they missed something, but that amount of oil usage will most likely be a leak i am hoping and not something gone wrong with the build, right? If it is just a seal i'll leave it till the -5's are ready to go on, cheers dude

Mine took a while to stop using oil.

Oil usage was at its highest in the first 1000km's and then slowly tapered off until ~5000km's is where it wasn't using any.

Wiseco forged pistons with the std ring pack, slight slap on cold start up. The motors done over 100,000km's now and still doesn't use a drop. :D

Eh don't say that, that would not be cool.. The workshops rebuilt a heap of rb26's though so i think they wouldnt make mistakes (or i hope)

ah thats good to hear, I'll hope mine does the same and tapers to 0 usage, i did spend 1000km's doing all the ring bedin processes so assumed they'd be fully bedded already.. It's reasonably slappy on startup, pistons are oversized CP items

Yeh i'm only running 10 psi on them and they've been thoroughly checked and are in good condition so i'm not so worried about them blowing up on me..

Have you had a look at plugs? Is it using oil on all cylinders? Is it blowing much oil smoke out the tailpipe? Are you driving it very hard?

Haven't looked at the plugs yet, i'll check em out tonight when i top the oil up and get back to here

It doesn't seem to be blowing much oil out the tailpipe, but it normally runs rich as hell so it's hard to tell what colour it is.. Not driving it very hard, mainly just to work and back and not revving it much yet either (for some reason i'm still scared it's going to blow up)

I couldnt agree more.

Considering a stock turbo can and WILL kill a motor if it fails... (how they 'checked' the turbos without pulling them apart ill never know...)

Putting stock turbos on a forged motor is not smart at all @ the risk of killing a built motor

Yeh i would have liked to put some new ones on but i owe the old man $10k for the rebuild as it is, still paying the car off, couldnt afford another 4k, I assume they just checked them for play and checked the condition of the wheels on em, i believe the majority of these things only fail because they're being boosted too high, i'm not exactly pushing the car and the boost peaks at 10psi so it should be right until i can afford some new ones

Yeh, but then i'd have to baby it for months until i could afford a power fc and a tune (thats the $4k), and even then have to have it tuned carefully so i wasnt maxing out the fuel system..

Easy tiger - while it may be a bad idea to put the std turbos on a freshly built engine.

I think we need to remember that these can and have travelled 100,000kms with no issues at all...

He said he's only running 10psi and driving to and from work, I dont think this is a high risk situation...

Last thing you wan GTAAAH is to go out and get into more debt when your not ready mate.

haha, i just found out citybank will take on my loan for 7% less interest PA than commonwealth, so the money i'll save will pay for the turbo (eventually) + then everythings new and i can stop driving it like i'm scared it'll blow up all the time.. + dad's loan service is 4% PA so no hurry there :D

Also.....What oil are you using as I didn't see that posted anywhere.............

I was using valvoline run in oil on mine.......500k service, 1000k service up then 1500k then 5000k I think....then started using the good stuff.....Also I wasn't allowed to use more than 5psi by my engine builder until it was run in.

    • I would just put EBC back on the "I would not use their stuff" pile and move on.
    • Can I suggest you try EBC directly again and link them to as many competitor catalogues as you can to show their listing is incorrect, eg https://dba.com.au/product/front-4000-series-hd-brake-rotor-dba42304/ If you have access to an R33 GTST VIN and your VIN, you could also use a Nissan Parts lookup like Amayama to show them the part number is different between 33 GTST and 34 GTT which may get their attention
    • So i got reply from EBC and they just this site where you can clearly see those 296mm fronts on R34 GTT. I send them photos and "quotes" that 296mm are not for 34 GTT and they are too small.     • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
